In this episode of our Lost Lessons of the Bass Professor mini-series we take a deep dive into the lures of Doug Hannon. The 1987 Burke Lures catalog featured the Hannon Field Guide System, with some old school lures like the Swimmin' Worm, the Slinker, the Hannon Frogbait, the Skitterfish, and the Hannon Snakebait. We also take a look at the more recent Doug Hannon Fishing Snake!

RANDY BLAUKAT SWIMMIN WORM VIDEO
• How To Rig And Fish Do...
Here at Retro Bassin', we are all about bass fishing, vintage bass fishing lures, and old school fishing tackle. Freshwater fishing has changed a lot over the years, but we remain true to the good 'ol days of bass fishing, when Bassmasters and fishing heroes like Bill Dance, Roland Martin, Jimmy Houston, Jerry McKinnis, Orlando Wilson, Babe Winkleman, Hank Parker, Al Linder, and Virgil Ward, ruled the TV and the waters. And let's not forget bass fishing heroes like the Bass Professor Doug Hannon, Dr. Loren Hill, Rick Clunn, Tom Mann, Jack Smithwick, Cotton Cordell, Ray Scott, Johnny Morris, Virgil Ward, Buck Perry, Don Butler, Fred C. Young, Alex Langer, and many others, whom all had significant contributions to the bass fishing tackle industry. And don't overlook grandpa's old fishing lures! Do they still work? Each year we looked forward to the Bassmaster Classic to see who would be king of the bass fishing world and what the best bass fishing lure would be for that year. Back when you had to call an 1-800 number to reach Bass Pro Shops or Cabela's, and there was no such thing as Google Maps or Googan Baits. We still love discontinued and/or forgotten products and fishing gear from bait makers like Heddon, Fred Arbogast, Rebel Lures, Smithwick, Cotton Cordell, Pico Lures, Strike King Lures, Burke Fishing Lures, Storm Lures, Mepps, Blue Fox, Rapala, Poe's, Creek Chub, Gary Yamamoto, Fleck, Bomber Lures, Crème Lures, Lunker City, Bill Norman, Color-C-Lector, Culprit, Flying Lure, Fish World, Bass Pro Shops, Whopper Stopper, Johnson, Mister Twister, Eppinger, Acme, Lindy, Abu Garcia, Shakespeare, and Uncle Josh. Let's not forget the antique fishing rod and fishing reel, as well as As Seen On TV products like the Instant Fisherman, the Instant Fisherman 2, the Powerpak Minnow, the Flying Lure, the Helicoper Lure, the Walking Worm, the Mighty Bite, the Bionic Minnow, and the Banjo Minnow. Each week we take a different detour down memory lane: sometimes one-the-water chasing largemouth bass with vintage rods, reels, lures, and equipment; sometimes digging through the discount bins at a local tackle shop; sometimes lure hunting at a National Fishing Lure Collector's Club meeting; sometimes in the studio unboxing some old school gold from eBay; sometimes doing a little bit of everything! Until next time, keep the carpet side up and definitely fish it old school!

100% true story. Grew up in the rural southeast during the 80s/90s. Lived near a creek and picked up bass fishing at an early age. Used to daydream looking through old Bassmasters magazines, and I always loved how Doug Hannon always had the BIGGEST bass and he'd be by himself in a jonboat with that hat, screw those 'fancy bass boats'. The true underdog who beat the flashy show with pure intellect, 'The Bass Professor'. Somewhere I read an article that mentioned his wife 'Linda' and maybe the city in Florida they lived in. Genuine curiosity, an idle mind, and good ol' 411 led me to a phone number. Again, I couldn't have been 10-11 yrs old and I called the number, his wife answered. I said ' Is this Linda Hannon?' She confirmed, and I believe I stated who I was and said I was looking for 'Doug Hannon', she sat the phone down I heard some background chatter, the next thing I know, I hear 'This is Doug Hannon', at the time, I could have been talking to Michael Jordan and not been as star struck or tongue tied. He proceeded to entertain my bumbling conversation for probably ten minutes, where I asked him what bait he had caught his biggest bass on (I just knew it would be a Hannon snake), which turned out to be on a live shiner, go figure.... I thanked him for his time and hung up... as insignificant as it was, he could have chose to be an a-hole, or not answer, but instead he took the time to talk to a kid, bugging him on his home phone, about fishing, which I always appreciated.

I also would like to see a full episode on the entire Burke catalog. I have great memories of fishing some small Burke frogs and catching bass and big shellcracker with them. The partnering of Hannon and Burke was a perfect match. Hannon was a stickler for realism and Burke fit the bill. He and his wife did an amazing job on the snake and frog designs. Don’t forget Doug designed the MicroWave rod guide system to pair with the Wave Spin. The MicroWave guides have won several best of show awards. Thanks for a great series about one of the foremost pioneers of and a fantastic innovator and educator in the fishing world.

What a great way to end the Doug Hannon series! Walking through that Burke catalog was just the coolest (and yes, I vote for another episode dedicated to the rest of the catalog). Those soft lures were so unique and the attention to detail that Doug and his wife put into developing them is incredible. Kudos to Burke for teaming up with Hannon to produce that line of baits and for featuring them so prominently in their catalog. As I'm sure many other viewers did, I scoured online to see if I could find the catalog and the baits you mentioned. This series, and this episode in particular, really enhanced my appreciation for Hannon's work. Super job, Chris, just super. A tip of the floppy camo hat!

Another great story. I'm really enjoying this channel. I graduated from college in central Florida and frequently ran up I-75 to Ocala to fish the waters in and around the Ocala National Forest. I believe most of Doug's filmed fishing was in that location. I met him in Ocala at a bait shop in either 1981 or 82. He seemed very personable and I enjoyed our conversation. He was becoming well known at the time regionally but I don't think he'd quite broken out nationally yet. I enjoyed the fact he was a fellow scuba diver and had studied bass underwater which was not something many did then. I caught my 2 largest bass from the Ocala National Forest, but in full disclosure I caught them on live shiners! LOL. Doug was also a shiner fisherman when the situation arose then. I bought his Big Bass Magic book when it came out and it was well written and informative. I had forgotten about his Skitterfish lure and had 3 or 4 that I used in Florida and south Georgia with good success. I was sad to hear of his passing in 2013. He was a pioneer in bass research and study and an authority bass fisherman/conservationist.

Caught my 3 biggest bass on a Hannon snake bait. Was a floating snake head. You rig an old school auger tail worm weightlesstexas rigged and fish it across pads and other weeds. Unbeatable. Still got 2 left and can't find them anywhere now. Hannon was a bass wizard

Thanks for this series of fond memories. His knowledge was amazing, his death a tragedy. By the time his idea of a spinning reel came out, I kinda wondered if he had to turned himself into a Roland Martin endorse anything kinda guy. Him, Glen Lau and Jerry Mckinnis were pure educators.

I love this channel. A a bass fisherman who started as a child in the 70s, all these old school baits take me back to a much better time . I still have a “pine barrens frog” in the package. Hannon actually modeled it after the “carpenter frog”. Very exclusive to the east coast coastal plain. I still have a northern leopard as well. Still use it upstate Ny. Love your videos. Keep up the great nostalgia.

Love this presentation as it relates to the over 70 years of my family's collection of fishing gear. This includes the 1950s glow in the dark plugs probably from radium. Caught my first 5 lb bass on the original purple worm that melted the plastic trays of my tackle box. Doug learned and taught fishing techniques without the technology so many of us depend on today. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

the curved hook for the green snake is called a Messler hook. They were typically used texas rig and were kind of a Tru Turn type of hook. I had the Doug Hannon VHS tapes that I practically wore out watching. In it he shows how to use the Messler hook to rig the original swimmin worm by threading it on the hook and sort of making a J shape. I don't think he invented the lure, I think it was a Florida lure that he discovered, and maybe 'improved' on. It's easy to rig, trick is to get it threaded right. It's also more weedless than you would think, since the point of the hook is in the middle of the spin. The VHS tapes preceded his lure deal with Burke if I remember correctly.

I still have some of the Snakebaits NIP, and a few loose ones, as well as most of the flex plugs that he and Burke came out with. I can honestly say that I have never caught a fish on any of them, lol. But Doug Hannon changed the way I fish. Started out my bass fishing in my late teens, growing up in FLA. Got into a local club, and back then it was a 10 fish limit and 12" minimum. Which meant most of us caught a ton of 11-1/2" fish. But the mentality was to catch a limit of keepers, then try to get a big fish (kicker) with whatever time you had left. I did that for a couple of years as well, until I started reading and watching everything I could by Doug Hannon. I started looking for big fish primarily. And I would never claim to be the next Doug Hannon, but it certainly made a difference in my catches. And I remember when he came out with the videos for 3M, for promo they sent him fishing to catch a 10 lb bass. He caught it on a Rapala floating minnow in one other lakes I fished the most (Orange Lake), and they printed a life-sized foldout of the 26" bass for the ad in the magazines at the time. I probably still have the magazine as well. Big Hannon fan here, and besides he is/was a guitar picker like myself. I enjoyed the video.

I loved Doug Hannon, but the biggest disappointment in a lure I ever had was his frog. I bought one at a tackle shop, I think I spent over 5$ which was a fortune back then! I lived near a lake in Mississippi that had weeds and I couldn't wait to fish that frog...much to my chagrin, it sunk even when I removed the belly weight LOL! The one I had, had a relatively hard soft plastic body (not foam) and sunk like a rock. It also wouldn't retrieve straight, coming in upside down as often as not. The may have changed the body to foam to make it float. They were beautiful lures, but my advice is to leave them in the package as collectors items...
