He was perfectly attired in business dress, formal wear, or for casual times( the beach or golf). Perhaps one of the most stylish movies of all would be "The Thomas Crown Affair " with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. Any man would be advised to emulate the dress of Thomas Crown. Mr. McQueen lobbied the director of this movie to cast him just to prove to the cinematic world he could pull off the roll of a well heeled sophisticate. Also, I might say that the very beautiful Sonya looks more than a bit like the sultry Miss Dunaway...elegant and oh so charming. Sonya is a modern day female style icon. Keep "Sartorial Talks" going! He could pull off wearing made to measure - bespoked - off the rack most if not every time. I would say clothing is a small portion, what matters is the person wearing it. I'm so glad that you presented this fun topic today. You've fired up my feelings about the place of cinema in our society(culture). Gregory Peck could sure wear a suit too! But one of his pictures(The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit) addressed the shackles of societal conformity. Oh gosh, so many things! Hugo professes his love and admiration for Frank Capra. He was a giant! Also Barbara Stanwyck, a huge favorite of mine. She was the star of arguably the best screwball comedy--The Lady Eve(d. Preston Struges) and arguably the best film noir Double Indemnity(d. Billy Wilder). Several Christmases ago, an Aunt and a Sister of mine and I, after a long wine filled conversation, decided that North By Northwest is the perfect movie...

I loved this talk and focus on the golden age of acting. I'm huge cinephile in addition to loving menswear, and I had an even greater appreciation for the style as I went back and rewatched all the classics!

Wonderful topic.Some years ago,there was a BBC period comedy series called "Jeeves and Wooster'.It involved the antics of a wealthy young scion and his valet.The fashions in the program were impeccable and accurate,as it takes place at the height of the Art Deco period,(late 1920's-1930's).It was a great time for men's (and women's) fashion.In the 90's we had Ray Liotta in 'Goodfellas' and Robert de Niro in 'Casino'.In his heyday,Fred Astaire would rehearse for 12 hours a day.His weight was around 150lbs.I would also include David Niven,he always looked sharp,in generally a classic English style.You two discuss these topics so charmingly.Thank you.

Great discussion! For me, Gary Cooper was the ultimate male style icon of the Golden Age of Hollywood and stood out even in an era where there were many memorable leading men and men who dressed well. He had the complete package and was probably one of the first actors who looked like he could be a modern male model (with his lean face and lean body). His looks and sartorial style are legendary, but I think what really sets him apart from the other men discussed in this video is that he embraced a wider variety of styles than they did--both on and off screen. He was really the first star to effortlessly combine American casual and western looks with the more refined British and European tailored looks. Fred Astaire was known for wearing tuxedos and Cary Grant was known for wearing suits, but Gary Cooper looked great (and comfortable) in everything from cowboy outfits to tuxedos, from tailored suits to period costumes. This was a reflection of his specific background (growing up on a ranch in Montana when it was one of the last frontiers in the U.S., attending boarding school in Britain, and later living in Italy for a year), but I think his style was endlessly fascinating. You can really see his influence on American fashion designers like Ralph Lauren.

Interesting that Hugo likes Cooper & the Frank Capra films. Love those movies! I discovered all of those movie icons as a teenager in the 1980’s. I was fascinated by the looks. So stylish.

The benefit of the Vesper/Bond exchange is that it is blunt enough for the completely unrefined among us grasp that something was happening. We may not be able to articulate it, but we know in our soul that something was happening during that exchange. It loud and bold enough that perhaps it can give way a more subtle, and refined interaction, in the same way that a man must buy that ill-advised black suit, before he realizes shades of nuance he didn't understand at first. Having once believed, without nuance, that the suit represented only tyranny and corruption, I find that elegance is not arbitrary, not to whim of any particular individual. Perhaps it is by the approval of a higher power that some outfits or styles stand the test of time. In the failure of the new boldness may we find the usefulness of the old elegance!

A great way to listen to this episode is to watch North by Northwest without the sound and focus on the various suits the characters wear. Thats a beautiful tie Hugo, I happen to be wearing a beige tie today as well, albeit kashmir and without stripes.

A really enjoyable episode. I really admire their style too. My brain will be working on the AJ clue for the next week but it’s not an easy one. I’ve often heard George Clooney put forward as a modern day style icon as he is always well dressed but I don’t know enough about celebrities to state it myself.

One person people don't often think of as a style icon is Jerry Lewis! Look at photos online...minus those 70' shorts. His movie wardrobes and also just " man about town" shots show great style

As epidsodes go this one is one of the best. Eclectic diverting and informative. The mention of Cecil Beaton was the icing on the cake. The subject matter brings to mind a bit of erudition once asseverated by Oscar Wilde ,( friend and collaborator of C.B.) He said " I am easily satisfied with the best."

Bruce Boyer has a new book on Gary Cooper . Have you read it? I recall seeing To Catch A thief as a child so it was not only a fashion inspiration but the catalyst to visit Cannes, Nice and Monaco which was a great experience.

Wonderful journey with 3 great male icons of the Screen. I remembered seeing a great photo of Gary Cooper standing next to a beautiful Dusenberg circa 1932-33 and it was such a great image. Not only were the stars icons then, but the cars were spectacular as well. Larger than life. I remember the great actress Helen Hayes speaking about working with Gary Cooper in A Farewell to Arms. She recounted- even though she was happily married to her husband- that Cooper's appeal was so great that if asked her to run away with him, she would have gladly left her husband! Gary Cooper was well known in Hollywood for having many affairs with his leading ladies!

Maybe a lack of Sartorial Icons can explain this, spotted today in Broadway, England - SHE wears, thigh length boots, an aubergine cashmere 3/4 coat with matching wide brimmed hat. HE wears head to toe, baggy black tracksuit. BLOKES eh!

With the present state of sartorial laissez-faire it's all the more reason to become your own style icon with emphasis on 'elegance' whether dressed up or in a more casual style. It's not that hard but you must 'want' to in order to succeed!

Hugo was asking in this video about Gary Cooper's height. He was 6'3" (191 cm). He was also wondering about John Wayne's height. He was 6'4" (193 cm). In photos of the two of them together, they looked about the same height. If anything, Cooper looked taller because of his body type and proportions.

You and your viewers would perhaps like to know that the film "North by Northwest" was pretty much used by Broccoli productions as a kind of blue print for their James Bond films and that in fact it was Cary Grant Broccoli's first choice to play JB but Cary Grant refused the offer because the producers wanted him to commit to make at least 3 JB films and he didn't want to make more than 2; and by the way Grant was invited as best man in Broccoli's wedding...the real James Bond that never was...

Super interesting discussion here! My parents weren't even born at the height of these 3 men's careers, so I am far removed from the world they lived in. However, I would like to push back a little bit on the point you make at the end of the video on the crudeness of the conversation in Casino Royale versus the subtlety of that in North by Northwest. It's probably fair to say that society was more puritanical back in the '50s that it was in 2006, when Casino Royale came out. So couldn't it be the case that the conversation in that movie was written to be just as crude as the one in Casino Royale, and was perceived as such, by the standards of that society? Maybe we perceive it as subtle today by comparison, but maybe back then it was seen as equally risqué. Curious to hear people's opinion on this. Cheers!

Lovely episode. But, I disagree with your characterization of the Casino Royale train scene, which you read part of. The by-play between Craig and Eva Green is actually quite similar to the North by Northwest sequence (and likely an homage to the prior scene), with each having edgy elegance. While Green talks about Craig's "perfectly formed ass," the dialogue between Grant and Saint is truly audacious for the era...actually talking about making love to a complete stranger, on film.

What about Giancarlo Giannini, he is my style icon of the silver screen

I only wear ventless jackets. I think it looks much better and when putting my hands in the pockets I usually open the jacket or use the jacket pockets. I think its a myth that it functions poorly but maybe it just works well for me because I'm quite fit.

Harry Styles a modern day style icon. While his sartorial choices will never work for me (I'm more of a Fred Astaire kind of guy:-) whatever he wears he wears it well. Props to any man who has the cojones to wear a pearl necklace and make it work.
