Definitely the baddest Camaro ever made. I'm a Mopar guy but the 69 Camaro ZL-1 is my favorite Chevy of the muscle car era without a doubt. Awesome car

69 1969 Camaros received the ZL-1 engine right from the factory under the COPO 9560 build order, but only two 1969 Corvettes received them. Go figure. Of course, you could always buy one over the counter and install it yourself or pay a dealer to do it for you, but that was half the fun. Then you could go hang out with "Grumpy" Jenkins on the weekends...😄👍🇺🇸

The baddest BowTie ever made is the 69 Camaro ZL-1 But I wouldn't mind owning a 62 Bel Air 409/409, a 65 Impala SS 396/425 hp, a 66 Chevy II L79 327/350 hp, a 69 Chevelle COPO 427, or a 69 or 70 1/2 Camaro Z28. I'm a Mopar guy first but I'm a muscle car fanatic no matter what brand. There's very very few that I actually don't like

Now I know the ZL-1 is a COPO car. But didn't they produce a COPO car that had drag slicks, roll bar, drag suspension, beefed up rear-end, and a built rockcrusher??? I don't know. It just seems like I remember seeing one.

"TRIPLE RED" ??? Interior, body paint....no vinyl top (would be 3).
@johnnytyler5685
@johnnytyler5685 2 жыл бұрын
@david bleh Uh...what? The red carpet is part of the red interior. The OP is correct...for it to be TRIPLE red it would have to have a red vinyl top aaaand...there actually was no red vinyl top available on a '69 Camaro. You could get a vinyl top in black, white ("parchment" they called it), blue, brown or green.
@bobbrinkerhoff3592
@bobbrinkerhoff3592 Жыл бұрын
actually they considered the top to be separate . The body tag would show two identical letters or numbers ( depending on the paint codes used that year ) for a single color painted car . Vinyl top cars had the paint code first and the vinyl top code after it . Technically it's a tri colored car , But most of us would call it as being red , with a red interior .

Like the L88 427, The ZL1 427 actually had a lot more horsepower and torque than actually advertised. The L72 427 in the Yenko Nova was actually right around it's 450hp factory rating but the ZL1 actually made near 500hp in spite of it's low 430hp rating. That was just to appease the insurance companies and to try and discourage regular customers from buying the ZL1 because it was built for NHRA Drag Racing
@jeremythompson9895
@jeremythompson9895 5 жыл бұрын
Same thing Chevy did with the L88 Corvette. They actually rated it at 5hp less than a much cheaper 427 Tri power Vette because they really didn't intend for the L88 or ZL1 to be driven on the street. Both factory race cars

The baddest muscle car ever made by Chevrolet. Even the 70 LS6 Chevelle pales in comparison to a 69 ZL1 Camaro. The all aluminum ZL1 427 weighed as much as a 327 small block so it made for a muscle car that actually handled pretty well and was one of the baddest cars you could buy during that era from any manufacturer. Very few muscle car engines eclipse the power of a Chevy ZL1 427. It's right up there with the Chrysler 426 Hemi, Ford R-Code 427, and Pontiac 421 Super Duty on the Mount Rushmore of muscle car/factory drag car engines. Always liked all the different solid lifter variations of the Chevy 409 too, and the 409 based 427 cubic inch Z11 engine in the 63 Impala factory lightweight drag car

Why is it a ZL1 in a Camaro and a L88 in the Corvette?
@bobbrinkerhoff3592
@bobbrinkerhoff3592 Жыл бұрын
because they were two completely different engines . L-88 used the cast iron block with aluminum heads , and the ZL-1 was all aluminum, and they did make two ZL-1 Corvettes .. If you wanted a L-88 in anything other than a Corvette you had to build it yourself .

@@bobbrinkerhoff3592 I can't look at it now, but I am almost positive that his 68 L88 was all aluminum. I could be wrong but I don't think so. As so as his dad bought it he had twin turbos put on it, he drove it one time and it scared him so bad he parked it in the garage and last I heard it was at a storage in Upland California.

@@jameskosharek6838 L-88 was only available in 1967,'68, and '69 Corvettes , if the engine was in any other car it was transplanted into it . There was a guy a year behind me in school that had a Marina blue '67 Vette and it said L -88 on the console , right behind the shifter . I don't know if the redisigned '68 , '69 cars did also , as I have never had the chance to get that close to one .They made an aluminum big block starting late in '65 for Can Am racing (Jim Hall's Chaparrals ) , with the street version ( ZL-1 ) coming out in '69 . The L-88 was iron block , with aluminum heads . Edit; each engine had their own camshaft profile , the ZL -1 was the wickeder of the two , then they started doing updated second and third design versions of each .

"The 69 Camaro ZL-1 made an even better street car than a race car" said nobody EVER. The ZL-1 427 didn't have any street manners because of it's 12:1 compression ratio and L88 cylinder heads. Definitely not an ideal car to buy to drive back and forth to work every day. A 69 Camaro SS 350 or 396 or a Camaro Z28 was a much better choice for a guy who wanted a fast car that could still be driven daily. If I was buying a brand new Camaro in 1969 it would be a Z28 with the dual quad Cross Ram intake...one of my favorite small block muscle cars ever made
@scarharting5577
@scarharting5577 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but the dual quad Z/28 would be a horrible car to drive on the street! Over-carbed and under-powered at low RPM for driving sedately away from a stoplight so as not to attract the attention of law enforcement, that car was for racing ONLY!
