In-depth look at the 1979 Pontiac Trans Am special edition Burt Reynolds Smokey and the Bandit car, and 1987 Buick Grand National, including all original documentation, manuals, books & paperwork.
Check out the black and gold Special Edition trans am featured in Smokey and the Bandit & Smokey and the Bandit 2 starring Burt Reynolds, and one of the most desirable versions of the Buick Regal.
The Buick was born from NASCAR origins - named for the NASCAR Winston Cup Grand National Series (the "Grand National" term was part of the Cup series nomenclature until 1986). Buick had won the Manufacturers Cup in 1981 and 1982 in General Motors stock cars, and wanted to capitalize on its success: "What wins on Sunday, sells on Monday".

Whoops, slipped up on my research in this one - utmost apologies! Here are some corrections as pointed out by knowledgeable viewers: - This 1979 400 4 Speed Trans Am had 220 Horsepower. - The 185 horsepower we referred to was actually in the 403 Oldsmobile engine automatic transmission 1979 Trans Am. - The T Tops in this one were Fisher as well, not Hurst. Thank you to everyone who commented for helping us keep the facts straight - we'll step it up moving forward! Feel free to add any other tidbits we may have missed below this one

I have the blk interior and tan interior done and same with turbo wheels. I do light diecast car mods. Older lady around here see her alot has same setup GRAND NATIONAL. See her alot at Thursdays, 6pm into the dark, WOODSIDE FERRY TERMINAL PARKING LOT shows. Wonder if AL MCPHEE of McPhee Ford dealership still has his Grand NATIONAL, know he has his 99 to 2002 TA's Anniversary convertibles auto/manual. He puts them on lot each yr just to draw in customers. Great friendly guy to me. Wonder if he has his GT40 RED.

220 hp for the 1979 400 4 spd TA. The 400 was only available in 1979 TA with a 4 spd. 185 hp was the 403 Oldsmobile engine in 79 TA automatic car. The 1979 TA 400 4spd ran 14.6 @ 96 mph . So it was pretty fast for 1979 times. Faster than the 79 Corvette. That’s a beautiful example you have of both the Pontiac SE TA and the Buick GN 👍

I remember prepping the Grand Nationals when new when I worked at a Buick Dealer as a tech. The oil filter hosing had a large rubber o ring that was sometimes improperly installed during assembly. You had to go out and whomp each Grand National before final prep and check to see if the seal blew out. If it did there was oil all over the motor and the o ring had to be replaced. Fun car though.

I'm glad to see you were honest enough to add the corrections to the two things you said about the Pontiac. One other thing of note is that for that W72 engine rated at 220, Hot Rod tested it and surmised that it was putting out more like 260HP, but yeah 220 was the official output of that engine. And 245 for the GN is very conservative also. It was closer to 310HP,, unofficially of course!

I remember the GN's brand new in 1987, they were all over the place. Definitely an icon of the 80's. Back then many hot rods and hopped up cars had a hard time keeping up with these if at all. Definitely an evil set of wheels back in the 80s that gave most males a sense of doom if your thinking of beating one to a merge. Many were fitted with aftermarket parts and nitrous that resulted in a faster then 13 sec nasty little beast !

I bought a Buick Grand National brand new in 1987 and drove it for many years and I can assure you it was no sleeper. I could lay waste to any vehicle that dared to challenge me, including several Corvettes and Mustangs. Due to insurance issues back in the day the GN was vastly underrated in terms of horsepower and torque. I can assure you it made way more than 245 horsepower. Car and Driver tested it and they got a 0 to 60 time of 4.9 seconds! All you have to do it stick your foot into it and you will know. I got a chip from Turbo City that allowed me to run more boost on the turbocharger. The only dumb thing I ever did with the car was trade it in! 🙄

The 1979 Trans Am you demonstrated was a 4 speed car, meaning it was one of the last actual Pontiac 400 ci. These engines were left over W72 motors from 1978 that Pontiac was saving for the 10th anniversary year. they were "under rated" at 220hp and opening the shaker hood scoop and installing true dual exhaust ,with two cats, gave you early 70's power ratings. You were quoting the Oldsmobile 403 engine HP rating of185hp. Pontiac was forced to use that engine due to EPA standards. Oh by the way , starting in 1978 GM made the Pontiac T-Tops, you got a body by fisher leather bags to store them in and they didn't leak as much as the Hurst tops. Concours value of that car is $76000.00 The Grand National was also under rated on horsepower. Remember Corvette was GM's flagship in performance so no other GM car car could out rate it but could out run it. Concours value on the Grand National is $57000.00. Oh, and GM logoed Body by Fisher until the mid 1990's the the company was dissolved and became part of GM. I know you want to grow you channel so do just a bit of research before you post or while editing. I would be glade to help you with any GM product questions or research, just email me.

As others have stated, that is not correct on the HP for the Trans Am. This has the 400 Pontiac in it (the one to get in 1979) and it had 220 HP as it was the W72 version (which was the only 400 that year and could only be paired to the 4 speed that year). Yes, it is 1,107 Black SE Y84 cars. Wrong again about the Hurst T-tops. This car has Fisher T-tops which were installed on the line either in Norwood, OH or Van Nuys, CA. Also, the 400 engine was not certified for sale in California. It was assembled there, but did not meet California air regulations at the time. Also when then NHRA tested the car, they found the 220 HP that was advertised by GM was a little under, it was more in the 250-260 range. Owning a 400/4 speed (10th Anniversary) since 1999, I can agree, they have more power than you think. LMP is still a Buick-Chevrolet-Cadillac GMC dealer at that location and now Finch.

From Wikipedia: Fisher Body was an automobile coachbuilder founded by the Fisher brothers in 1908 in Detroit, Michigan; it had been a division of General Motors for many years, but in 1984 was dissolved to form other General Motors divisions. Fisher & Company (originally Alloy Metal Products) continues to use the name. The name and its iconic "Body by Fisher" logo were well known to the public, as General Motors vehicles displayed a "Body by Fisher" emblem on their door sill plates until the mid-1990s. (Interesting article) check it out.

Both are pretty cool cars. I'd take the trans am, even if it's not the better car. It's cool factor is through the roof and it's not like they're daily drivers anyway, so coolness is what's counts. ;) There were not many cool cars in the 80's though, so gotta give that to the buick and monties. Both are a far cry from that blue boss 9 I checked out, when I last there though. :D

Back when new, I had a dark blue ,t-tops, 4spd, T/A 6.6. They had (according to Pontiac)220sae net. Ur's appear to have the same, but, the Oldsmobile 403, did have 185. Also, the 4spd was NOT available with the Oldsmobile 403. C'mon get Ur dad, he knows about cars. Close but, no cigar! Plus, Smokey & the Bandit was a 1977.

You've already been corrected on the hp rating, but even at 185hp, you have to give Pontiac credit. Not only did they unofficially begin the muscle car era with the 1964 GTO, they were the last man standing in 1979 - the '79 T/A was the very last big-cube muscle car. And even then, some freer exhaust, a carb change, and some timing would take these cars right back to 1970 power levels - especially if you doubled down with a cam and some head work. And you're spot on about the influence of "Smokey And The Bandit." It dropped in 1977. 1978 was the best sales year the T/A ever had, and sales nearly DOUBLED in 1979 - over 100,000 units, and that's not even counting sales of the base Firebird or Formula. Pontiac would never sell that many T/As again.

Even better if it had either the tan cloth or tan leather which really made the car look rich. I have over 2500 , 1:18 Diecast cars and other scales and memorabilia.
