@2:18 What you're hearing here kiddos, is Lew Dewitt knocking it out of the park with one of the clearest high tenor vocals in the history of country music. To all the so called tenor singers of today that are watching this video. Lew just gave you a free lesson in tenor 101. THIS...….IS HOW IT"S DONE!!!!!!! RIP Lew Dewitt & now Harold Reid. I never knew either of you, but I've loved & admired you as brothers for many yrs. God Bless Don, Phil, & Jimmy. We pray that the Lord comforts you guys, all the family & close friends throughout this time of grief. Be comforted in knowing we will see them again singing with the angels.

Why can't songs sound like this today?
@maryannanderson7517
@maryannanderson7517 4 жыл бұрын
I have a theory of what might be a possible reason. These guys from the past LOVED music and were willing to practice HOURS every day to get their sound perfect. They had to get the sound perfect because everyone was recorded on one track so if one of them messed up that meant EVERYONE had to start all over. That put huge pressure on them to get it right and that meant those hours of practice were necessary. My father was part of a gospel music quartet when he was in college. He told me that they would NEVER sing a new song in a church or on the radio until they had first practiced it at least 100 times. That's no typo. That's ONE HUNDRED times. When they got up to sing a song they wanted to know all the words without ever having to look at the lyrics. They wanted to know if there were places in the song where the guy singing lead could switch to tenor and the guy singing baritone could switch to lead to make it sound better. They wanted to make sure they had the tune exactly correct. They wanted to make sure the key they were singing it in was exactly right and not just slightly too high or slightly too low. In other words, they wanted to know the song inside and out and they could only know the song that well if they spent HOURS practicing it. And of course, they were willing to put that sort of work into preparing to sing the song because they loved the music and they loved what they were doing. It seems that many of today's singers do NOT love the music and do not even attempt to be a great singer and many of them would not even consider practicing a song for days in order to get it exactly right. They just want to be a celebrity and make lots of money...and it shows in the inferior product they put out. Even with their multiple tracks and the ease with which someone can redo just his part of a song if he is the only one who messed up, they still put out an inferior product. Hence the frenzy to invent the good old autotune that can be used when a singer looks good on camera but just cannot sing. "Get up here and look purdy, darlin'. We'll take care of all those times you were out of tune with this handy little gadget we just invented." What a gyp! That is why "live" concerts today are so often lip-synched. It's to hide the fact that the singer can't actually sing. I guess that's the end of my rant.
@jamesconner3437
@jamesconner3437 3 жыл бұрын
@@maryannanderson7517 ...that was not just a rant...it was spot on for so many "personalities " today who are masquerading as singers. If that is popularity, it is entertainment- not singing.

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL! the first lead has an INCREDIBLE! voice and the second lead can hit some serious high key and it's no surprise they won best country vocal group several years in a row from 1971 to around 1978 with crazy voices like that, just a side note the guitar licks in between are pretty awesome too and did anyone notice the second lead guy's vocals were turned too high? being a sound technician it stands out to me
@rickyedwards7504
@rickyedwards7504 2 жыл бұрын
Turned too high?!?!? I’m not sure but I think you are criticizing their mix, typical sound man! The singers set the mix, the sound man’s job is technical. He is to make happen what the artist demands. No the “second lead” is not set too high, that is the Statler’s sound

I loved the Statler Brothers so much. Fortunately when they toured they came to my city quite often. I saw their show every time. For some reason this song popped into my head today, and I had to come see them sing it. I had forgotten at the end Lew’s tenor goes high and is just so perfect. After Lew got sick and left the group it was never the same. Their harmony and sound were very very special. I’m grateful I kept all my vinyl albums; and turntables are making a comeback. I get to enjoy them all over again.

Lew's high harmony was a perfect fit. With all respect to Jimmy Fortune, he could never truly fill Lew's vocal style

Todays singers wish they had this talent. I believe that when God was giving out singing talents, modern so-called singers went and hid. The Statler Brothers were and are a great group and God has well blessed them. I regret never having met them.
