Tristan (Brad Pitt) and Susannah (Julia Ormond) reunite. She gives him back his bracelet. Tristan says it's a magic bracelet that protects the person wearing it. So he prefers that she keep it. Susannah asks him if he wants to see Alfred (Aidan Quinn) but he prefers to decline the offer.

What’s the movie about?

"A little girl. That's me, right?" You can detect a subtle resentment in Isabel's voice there. She loved Tristan since for as long as she could remember, yet he only ever saw her as a child. This is the first moment where he looks at her for the beautiful woman she is becoming, and you can see the change in him.

I agree, he was in his prime, but strangely enough, I speak to many women who just aren't interested in him. Simon Cowell, for instance, gets more favourable reviews than Brad Pitt, almost always. Bizarre!!

Notice she never chases Tristan? She loved him ever since she was a child, but when he comes back she’s not super excited and eager to please. They just give each other gifts, she welcomes him back, and walks away. He’s the one who chases after her, proposes to her, and has kids with her.

I think that’s what he liked about her compared to Susannah. While Susannah basically threw herself at Tristan, Isabell was much more of a “lady” about her attraction to him, which I think he saw it as a nice change of pace, and gave him the stability he always needed, but wasn’t able to achieve with Susannah.

This is probably one of my most favourite films, it is SO perfect, James Horner´s music, Montana scenery, incredible camera by John Toll and the story is so powerful, it is depressing but full of soul, drama, passion, everything is there. Brad Pitt´s best role by far.

There are many beautiful scenes in the movie, but the one you just mentioned to me is just cringeworthy. That's not "love at first sight", thats just lust. Maybe it developed into something more in the movie, but doesnt make this storyline less creepy.

Now that I’m looking at these scenes again - I see Susanna was awestruck a at Tristan from first sight and Tristan was also attached to her but .. when he saw Isabel, he was stunned.. It’s also more clear that Tristan cared for Susannah and nurtured love for her through even the separation and would’ve asked her to marry him if she waited. But the love he felt for her was nixed with also love he felt for his lost brother because she is forever associated with him. Even the bangle of protection shows how much he wants those he loves to be safe. Once again, if Susannah waited, I think he would have married her but he would still be awestruck by Isabel and probably choose to stay away to make sure he doesn’t fall for someone else’s .. that look on his face when he saw her …

I said something like this on a similar video and got a lot of flack for it. I basically said that Tristan and Susanna essentially just loved the idea of each other similar to Tristan‘s parents. She loved his wild and untamed nature whereas he liked her because she was smart and classy. But I think for him, it was also because he felt connected to a part of Samuel when he was with her. I also mentioned how had Samuel lived, Tristan still would’ve ended up with Isabel.

I really do believe she loved Samuel but when he died what could she do? She fell in love with Tristan but his Spirit was so restless he couldn't settle down. Alfred was A Good Man who Loved her. She obviously loved being part of their family and didn't want to leave. I honestly think I can understand but why Tristan would have such an intimate relationship with her and then dump her I don't know. I think that was wrong.

He was grieving. People do things they regret during their grieving state. Susannah made the mistake of thinking Tristian loved her and that they would be together forever. Truth is she also movies on way too fast with Tristian and Samuel wasn’t even dead that long.

she destroyed herself and the family. Shes lucky that the dad even let her stay that long and the oldest guy took care of her. The girl had no shame.She could leave if she wanted to, but she decided to stay cause she was screwing around with her fiance's brother. She came with Sam, slept with middle brother( what a way to grief for someone 😒) and then married the oldest one. At the end, she was hoping to end up with the middle guy again 😂. Men move on in their relationships much faster than women. Tristan was truly happy and settled down with Isabelle, while Susannah tho married to Alfred was slowly dying inside with feelings of regret and doubt and abandonment. 😢

@KnoxWB I worked on many film sets. It’s more common than you think- with actors. I don’t know about nowadays but- 2001-2009 I saw _many_ actors, even married ones, go on a film set for 3-5 months, carry out full on affairs with their costar, and then go back home to their husbands/wives like nothing ever happened. One woman in the makeup department in Michael Bay movies always always hooks up with someone during filming, even if they’re married. We called her Easy-K (her name started with an K) Hollywood is a bunch of sluts lol At least Brad and Julia were single during this. They were both beautiful, had amazing chemistry, and lived in the same house during filming. Something was bound to happen. Same way he started with Angelina too- without the “single” part

Welcome home, Isabel says. She was the only home to Tristan. Tristan gave Susannah a bracelet that protects her but married Isabel, his home. Unfortunately, he was not able to protect Isabel just like he couldn't protect Samuel. Tristan took that personally.

I never liked the Susannah character. I hated the way she jumped into Tristan,after Samuel died. The actress did a great job.

I understood where she was coming from. She has no family. No support. Living in a cabin in Montana in a society where marriage to a man was the only means of survival for her. She spent seven if her youthful years waiting for Tristan only for him to send her a letter saying to marry someone else, and Alfred was a good option for her. There weren't really a lot of choices that she had.
