LEGENDS OF THE OLD WEST presented by Black Barrel Media. Orrin Porter Rockwell is born into an era of religious fervor in the eastern United States. His family soon becomes close with the Smith family, and Porter becomes the youngest convert to Joseph Smith’s new religious movement, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The Saints immediately meet resistance to their ideology and they move west to Ohio and then Missouri. In Missouri, they begin years of conflict with the locals.

In my family we refer to OPR as "Uncle Port" as my grandmother learned to call him that from her father's stories of him visiting his home as a child. Port would get down on the floor and let the children ride him like a horse.

*I am NOT sure if you meant to make this sound CRAZY... But you definitely did lol. Coming to someone's house & getting on your hands & knees (All fours) and letting KIDS ride you like a Horse, makes it sound like the guy may have enjoyed it.... For all the WRONG REASONS.* 😅🧐🤔

And then they wonder why the Mormon faith became so almost warlike and isolations. I don't blame them for that after hearing this.

I have been eagerly awaiting this episode. I grew up in the Mormon faith and was always fascinated by this part of the Mormon history (Eventhough-and probably because-my elders were not so keen to discuss it).

Hey Scott, I was listening to the podcast on iHeartRadio and thought you would want to know that the last three minutes of the podcast was cut (starting at the part where everyone was huddled on the banks of the river). It simply went to a commercial break and ended.

I'm not Mormon, but this begs the questions: 🔹"Freedom of Religion"? 🔹They should have had protection under the Constitution. 🔹"Why did they not go to the President, the Federal Government?" I can see where the public may have had some concerns when 1000 or so come migrating in, but that could have been reasonably managed by the Chirch Administrators. The Public feared being a minority among the group and Religion being such a volatile subject ...

The federal government didn’t like Mormons and the early Mormons talked back against slavery so we were hated in Missouri everywhere they went they were hated that’s why they moved to Utah and opposed the federal government setting up a governor

@@thomasmolyneaux3700 Thanks, I get this, it's just tragic that so many suffered as a result of: Judgemental, Prejudices, Fears, actually it is our Human "Lower Mind, aka Ego Mind, aka Adolescent Mind" ("where all our negative thought energies reside: fear and fear based thoughts, prejudice, accusations, judging and judgemental, jealousy, envy, etc, and our Lackings: lack of self worth, self esteem, self confidence, and balanced self love, etc.') Our "Higher Mind aka Mature Mind" is where all our Positive Thought Energies and Wisdom reside. We can establish a habit of being; "Conscious in Thought" + "Applying Higher Mind" The we pause apply thought, choose to make most appropriate decisions, response, or action. Rather than when unaware and living through our Lower Mind, where we simply react. As children and Adolescents do, this why the Lower Mind is associated with Adolescence. It is largely a choice to practice the Higher Mind, although some actually have a greater tendency to think more maturity. However, it requires knowledge of the subject and the choice to practice the Higher Mind. Living through our Higher Mind offers us a more Harmony experience. It also would be supportive of "Turning the Other Cheek", and once it is practiced for some time (6 months to a year), it seasons the individual in a state of maturity where they with don't have the desire to react and lash back at someone or it becomes far easier not to. The mind is not judging rather discerning Had our predecessors understood this, much could have been avoided. All conflicts, and every war, requires the Lower Minded Thoughts and desires, for they are a result of lashing back, greed, desiring what others have, and/or the thirst for Power and Control. News Medias realized this and the foster the Public in their Lower Mind for manipulation, misleading, Profits and Power. I'm a Sociologist,/Behavioralist and Historian, Behaviors have long been my area of studies, my 3rd degree is in Journalism, the 3 fit well for understanding our Society, Government/Political Perspectives, etc. Peace literally exists within and when we desire to Mature in our Mind/Thoughts, live in Harmony, and find Joy in our Creative Passions (whatever they may be), then we absolutely will beging to experience our desires and Peace on multiple levels. The "Universal Law of Attraction" is Absolute, it is and is of the Divine Design. "Thoughts + Feelings X Beliefs" = Our Frequency = Our Reality The Higher Mind = Positive Energy Thoughts and Feelings. The Lower Mind, the lower frequency. Yeshua/Jesus taught from the foundation of the "Universal Law of Attraction" Note the details and apply in your life for your more positive experiences. It isn't a Religion, so it doesn't conflict with one's Religious Beliefs, it should actually support and enhance ones practice. Best Thoughts ... @@kennylarsen5241and marrying others wives in plural marriages and just generally being shit bags. How people are being sympathetic to the Mormons on this one really shows how many ghouls there are. They massacred innocent people and then stole their children and lie about it to this day. Commit fraud to this day too! Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints this is crazy.

Sir as you say you are ignorant in the LDS church I’ll just clear some things up for you 1.we absolutely do not discriminate against race or country of origin we send missionaries to other countries to try to convert people if they feel obliged to do so 2.Puerto Rico is an American territory 3.its definitely not a secret society we allow all visitors to our church 4.idk who exactly would be comfortable with finding their kid with a sex toy 5.We follow the law of chastity a lot of other churches do to 6.i have no idea what you mean by Soak 7.we are not a cult we try to convert people to our church like they did kind of like with old missions,we do take tithing but that goes towards our church and it goes to help pay for temples where people are married and perform baptisms along with supplying church run social institutions like homeless shelters or at risk houses People who leave the church say that we are cult is probably because they couldn’t handle modesty guidelines or felt that we were to strict with rules Please try to find out more about people or institution before you refer to them as villains or cults

You know the LDS church lied and committed fraud to hide $32 billion in shell companies all to keep people paying the tithing. Let that sink in, $32,000,000,000.00 and they intentionally hid that money from the congregation…32 and count them, 1, 2, 3,4,5,6,7,8,9 0’s. People call it a cult because the hierarchy uses and encourages the use of psychological tactics that other groups who identify as cults use.

*I am, pretty ignorant (Lacking Knowledge), of the Morman's Faith & Religion but my most recent Ex-Girlfriend, grew up & was raised in a "Morman Household", she was also Puerto Rican, which always struck me as odd because I thought the Morman faith only allowed "Americans" too join their religion & practice their religious beliefs... My girl, herself, did NOT practice The Morman Faith but her family still did... She would always tell me things about growing up in a Morman Household but it seemed like she did NOT really want to talk about it & like it was almost a "Secert Society", in a way. This may be "TMI" (to much information) but we were in a sexual conversation & I remember telling her she was TO DAMN horny & I'm going to order her some toys and she said she's never had any &/or even used any because she was Morman & her parents would kill her if they found out she had "Sex Toys" and that was when I first learned she grew up in a Morman Household & her family were still Morman... Then she talked about how Mormans were not allowed to have sex, before marriage? If I recall correctly and Mormans would "Soak"? And if you don't know what "Soak" meant, like myself, look it up but be prepared to be a little freaked out lol 🧐😂* *It seems like Morman Faith is walking a fine line between "Cultism" & religon. When people leave the Morman Faith, they always end up saying it's a "Cultish Like" religion & faith.*

Soaking is fake/joke. There are as many Mormons outside of the USA as there are in it. No sex until marriage...which was taught for hundreds of years by multiple religions but modern society ignores that. Props to the Mormons for attempting to live their religion to the best of their abilities and not changing because of societal norms are shifting

What a bunch of garbage. I am LDS and it is the most beautiful, peaceful way to live. The bible teaches Chasity which is the teachings of Christ. So you think our Saviour is a weird. You are talking about something that you don’t know about. Persecution still , never ends. More freedom in the church than anywhere else.all mankind has freedom to choose. But not free to choose the consequences of those choices.
