@legendsdogtraining

That is a clicker. A clicker is used to mark desirable behavior, bridging the gap between the time the behavior was offered and the subsequent reinforcement.

When clickers are used correctly they will definitely accelerate the learning process, by providing clear feedback to the dog. It's important to use a 1:1 ratio of click to food reinforcement. One other piece of advice is to start training in a low distraction environment and slowly build up to more challenging scenarios. Good luck with your training! And thanks for watching my videos.

Hi it's me again. Im having some trouble with potty training my frenchie :\. I've read your blog but couldn't find nothing about this subject. What im doing is, when she pees or poop somewhere around the house I pick her up and put her nose in front of it, telling her No! not here, then i take her to the floor dipper where i want her to do her needs and place her there, telling her Here! Now what i have acomplished is a dog who doesn't want to pee infront of me and waits till i'm gone to do it. So im getting very frustated about it. What would you recomend? She's about 3 month and a half now. Been with me for about 2 weeks now. Dont know if this is normal for her age but i would like to know what you think about this type of behaviour. Anyway sorry for the long message! And thanks a lot for taking the time to read this if you did!

I don't like the clicking stuff cause then you have to carry a clicker around with everywhere. Not bashing in anyway but I think ill just stick to my voice commands and positive reinforcement with my doggies. Seems to have worked well with my Boxer and Boston. Bout to get a frenchie and hope itll be the same

We just got a brand new 8 week old frenchie. We have only had him for a week now (so now 9 weeks as I am writing this) and as I understand he is still figuring everything out, how can I train him to stop biting on everything. From his crate, to the Christmas tree, the tree lights, the cupboards under the sink in the kitchen, his paper for potty training, you name it he bites it. He will only bite his toys if you are right next to him but very easily distracted and immediately finds something he is not supposed to bite to go and bite. Within the first week he has already potty trained extremely well, but the biting, even ankles and hands I need to train against before it becomes a bad habit out of control

+JMakahaFitz Hey! Puppies require a top notch management plan. There are so many behaviors that are tied into their natural development - they're curious, playful, easily bored/frustrated and they want to explore which leads to a lot of behaviors that we find to be less than desirable: biting, mouthing and chewing to name a few. While we can do a lot to shape calm behavior, and improve social interactions, we also have to be realistic in knowing that these behaviors will not change over night. These behaviors need to be well managed while we begin teaching them all the things they need to know to thrive as an adult. I usually use a combination of a puppy proofed gated area and a crate - these are tools that the puppy needs to be conditioned to (throwing a dog in a crate or behind a gate without proper conditioning can generate a lot of frustration and anxiety). But once a puppy learns to be comfortable with these spaces, they will help to manage potty accidents, chewing, and mouthing on furniture, hands, shoe laces, and pant legs. Take your puppy out regularly and frequently for potty trips and for one-on-one play and train sessions. During those sessions you're going to build value for calm behavior. For example, each day you can use your puppy's breakfast and dinner to reinforce them for sitting calming in their dog bed or on a training mat. You're also going to play games that teaches the puppy what types of objects they are allowed to put their teeth on. Structured games of tug or fetch is great for this, it's also a good way to spend mental and physical energy. If you want to set up a consultation over the phone or skype, fill out this form: www.legendsdogtraining.com/assessment-form.html - Consult is usually about one hour in length, costs 90 dollars, and includes a write up of training and management recommendations. Federico Egli Hey, thanks for watching my videos! Three training tips: #1 Break down your training criteria. A "stay" can be broken down into three different elements: duration, distance, and distraction and each of these elements can be broken down into smaller building blocks. Start small, build big. #2 Set the stage for success. I spend the first couple of weeks training in a low distraction, low stress environment. When I am working with distractions, I am doing so in a way that I have complete control. For example, if I use a food distraction, I have the dog on a leash and drop the food behind me so that if they do attempt to go for the food, I can EASILY apply gentle pressure to the leash and step in front of the dog to block the attempt. #3 Keep sessions short and fun. Five - ten minute sessions. If you or your puppy are frustrated by the training, then something is wrong. Take a break and restrategize. I am planning to create more step by step training tutorials for basic behaviors. If I do, I'll keep you posted!

@FILLY2KT Hi! I think you're referring to the clicker. The clicker is a marker. It's marks the moment that a dog offers behavior that is desired and predicts reinforcement. Professional animal trainers use markers because they are generally paired more consistently with high value reinforcement than a verbal marker like "good." A properly used clicker can accelerate the learning process because it is a distinct sound that can help dogs get into a learning mind set. It also allows for very precise timing - this is particularly important when training a new or complex behavior. Thanks for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it. - Alyssa Rose (Lapinel), CPDT-KA | Legends Dog Training

Very cruel to use food to make the poor dog obedient. How would you like to be trained that way?
@legendsdogtraining

Masoud Navard Hi! Thanks for watching and taking the time to write in. In nature, the acquisition of food shapes behavior. This is true of all animals: birds, bees, wolves, lions, squirrels... Domesticated animals, like dogs and cats, are usually served food in a bowl. All the mental and physical energy that would have gone into acquiring that food has no purpose, which contributes to many of the behavioral issues we see with dogs. Studies have found that given the choice, animals prefer food which is acquired through some level of problem solving. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment. I do appreciate it. Masoud Navard I do appreciate that you are looking out for the well being of dogs. However, this training in particular is meant to minimize or regulate stress, fear, anxiety associated with the dog’s routine or environment and to strengthen communication. My goal is to make sure that I am engaging the dogs that I work with in a way that maintains their enthusiasm in learning. Thanks again for commenting. Best, Alyssa Rose, CPDT-KA

@@legendsdogtraining Hello Alyssa,for how long one needs to use a clicker.Is this for the first few months? Thanks
@legendsdogtraining
@legendsdogtraining 5 жыл бұрын
Borys Gornicki hey, thanks for taking the time to write in. You can use the clicker interchangeably with a verbal marker like “yes” or “good”. Verbal markers can be used more informally once your dog begins offering desirable behavior more reliably. You can also become more creative with reinforcement once a behavior is well established - a biscuit, a food puzzle, or play time with your dog’s favorite tug toy or squeaky plush toy. It’s always tough to give a timeline since every dog will learn at a different rate. The frequency of training and the dog’s learning history will also impact the timeline of training. Alan Wayte Hey, thanks for watching and commenting. Weight gain is a valid concern when you're using food in training. That's why I recommend people use food that supplements the dog's daily meals. Training food can be both nutritious and delicious. I use happy howie's rolls (turkey, lamb or beef) or diced chicken. I have never had an issue with weight gain from training, even when working with dogs with serious behavioral issues, that require long term training programs. Thanks again for watching. - Alyssa Rose, CPDT-KA
