About this video: This video depicts training exercises for a one year old Dogue de Bordeaux (French Mastiff) that exhibits general anxiety, as well as, separation anxiety. When he is left alone, and given free range of house, he chews on the blinds, and other off limit items. His owners also report that he becomes hyperactive, and "acts out" prior to departure (jumping, mouthing). His training started in a low stress training environment, and built a strong reinforcement history for calm behavior. Once he was proficient with these exercises they were integrated into situations that generated anxiety. The key to behavior modification is to work at the dog's level, advancing in the level of difficulty when the dog shows you they are ready.

It can be very challenging to live with a dog that has anxiety. On the other side, it’s not healthy for a dog to be experiencing intense or chronic levels of stress. The best way to help a dog work through anxiety is to create a practice of working through calming exercises. If you’re interested, I have an online class starting soon that shows people how to work their dog through this. It applies the same principles shown in this video. My website is www.legendsdogtraining.com and here’s the class I would recommend: www.legendsdogtraining.com/live-classes/ Let me know if you have questions. Best, Alyssa

I know it’s a very old video, but it’s impossible to find anything breed specific and useful about French Mastiffs when it comes to my situation. I adopted my Bordeaux when he was 90 days old and he was and still is a very loving and social dogs who loves all humans and is cautiously interested in other animals but not so much as humans. Now he’s 1 year and 5 months old and he is fearful and anxious when someone approaches him head on or showers him with instant attention when meeting. Despite desensitizing him to sounds when he was young he still gets freaked out by loud sounds. I just want him to be confident and I don’t know what to do

Hi, thanks for taking the time to write in. Adolescents and early adulthood is a time where we can see stress responses peak. Most people reach out for training regarding fearful or anxious behavior when their dog is around 1-2 years of age. Most people try to take fear and anxiety head on by exposing their dog to the things that trigger them with the idea that this will "desensitize" them to the trigger. In many cases the opposite happens - the dog becomes more sensitized. Instead, the focus right now should be to build a calm connection with your dog by working within his comfort zone and building trust and communication. This is what I was doing in the video with Bruce Bruce. Ultimately the skills he was learning could be incorporated into situations that triggered fear and anxiety. This approach is the most effective way to get to the root of the problem and really see the best in your dog rise to the surface. If you're curious to learn more I have online classes. My website is legendsdogtraining.com Mat Work would be the best starting point. Thanks again for writing in and let me know if you have questions. Best, Alyssa Rose, CPDT-KA

I lost my French mastif he ran away what should I do ? And if I ever find him how would I be able to train him?

I'm so sorry to hear this. Unlike a terrier or husky that has an inborn tendency for exploration, a Mastiff is generally more of a homebody so he (hopefully) didn't go too far. Assuming he ran away from home - I would canvas your neighborhood, go door to door, talk to neighbors, hand out flyers with your phone number - somebody is likely to have seen him. How old is your dog? How is he with people? Social? Out-going? Nervous? I hope you find him. If you do find him, feel free to connect with me through my website www.legendsdogtraining.com - fill out an assessment form and we can set up a consultation over the phone and discuss ways to keep him safe in the future through a combination of management (securing exits) and training. - Alyssa Rose (Lapinel), CPDT-KA

Hey, thanks for watching and writing in. I teach an online class that might be a good fit. It establishes a foundation in training and then teaches people how to integrate that foundation into real world challenges. It’s the same process that this dog went through. my bitch is like this all the time, she can't relax, we got her when she was 4.5 years old, she's 6.5 now, still stressed out, doesn't know 1 command....only knows "no" and "come here"....its making my life hell, I've tried everything, and super jealous of our bulldog, who was happy to have her in our "pack" she attacks him when I'm not there, and stares him down when I am there, its a nightmare.....I was trying to give her a good home, and at the same time have a companion for my bulldog, and they got along great to begin with it seemed, there's no aggression from the bulldog, he just doesn't want to go outside now.

Hi! Thanks for watching and taking the time to write in. The most effective training focuses on conditioning calm. The mat work exercises that you see in this video helped this dog to offer calm behavior with many different triggers. Relaxation exercises on a training mat benefits all dogs, but it's especially important for dogs that are anxious, reactive or aggressive. I teach online classes about training for anxiety and reactivity. If you're interested in learning more you can go here: www.legendsdogtraining.com/online-classes/ I would recommend the Mat Work class for general anxiety and aggression in a multi-dog home. Best, Alyssa Rose
