This is pretty incredible! It's very close to how real automatic transmissions work and your design is incredibly impressive.
@sward5090
@sward5090 3 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry but I get it is good and it is impressive but incredibly space inefficient and in its current state *not automatic* it is currently the most inefficient manual gearbox, an automatic transmission changes the gears automatically when the motor reaches maximum speed in the current ratio therefore it will Gear up to a higher gear ratio. for example it will *automatically* change from a 16:10 tooth ratio to maybe an 18:8 ratio or it could be 8:18 up to a 10:16. the point is he has no automatic transmission because he is having to manually change gears so you might as well build a far more compact and space efficient design to a 6 speed manual transmission. I recommend a video by Dgustafsson13 where he has a rather compact and very clever 6 speed manual transmission in Lego technic. I don’t mean to bang on but the Amount of gears in this assembly and the distance the energy has to travel through these gears make the drivetrain very inefficient. As the energy output from your PF XL motor travels through the gears energy is transferred and therefore lost, this is done by the gears moving and against with each other creating noise which is a transfer from kenetic energy ( the one you want) to sound which means you’re output power is less than your input. If you reduce the size and reduce the amount of gears and distance between the motor (input) the gearbox (transmission) to the axle or axles (output) you have less cubic area to dissipate energy which means you loss less to noise, friction and thermal energy, thus deeming your vehicle powerful and reliable.

@@MrT------5743 it’s not itself an automatic transmission, but it’s a demonstration of how an automatic transmission changes gears. A manual transmission looks and works very differently than this. I don’t understand why you people are treating this like it’s a product being sold in a car, it’s literally just a demonstration of changing gears. The “automatic” part was controlled by the guy instead of a computer.

Well seeing as torque converters need atf to work I’d say no, how would you get the opposite vanes to spin free from each other and also seal the atf inside. Also for this to be a true automatic it needs a valve body and tons of ball valves.

Modern Automatic Transmissions have many computer controlled solenoids and are no longer "fully automatic" in a mechanical sense, unlike older hydraulic-only 4-speed automatics commonly seen up into the 90's and early 00's. Some are even basically manual gearboxes that are computer controlled, clutch and all. So this seems reasonably accurate for a modern planetary 6-speed automatic that would have computer-controlled solenoids to engage and disengage gears at the right times.

Coming back to this after quite some time, I can tell you with certainty that this gearset, when considering the actual gearset only without the clutches and brakes, is a Ravigneaux gearset featuring the equivalent of "stepped-planet" outer planet gears. Stepped planet gears allow you to reduce the under-drive ratio (how much the torque is multiplied by) without making the gearset larger. You are unintentionally more clever that you realised. If the terms I have used confuse you, I get it. Took me a couple hours of constant reading to understand them myself.

I feel like there's a possible way to make a gearbox that automatically shifts without locking mechanisms maybe with planetary gears and stuff, the central idea being that at some speed 2 different sets of gears could begin to work as one, increasing or decreasing the ratio. perhaps this idea will need some developing

He is trying to show how an automatic gearbox in a car works (with torque converter, not dual-clutch). Automatic in that context does not mean it is switch automatically. But the actions his fingers do can be actuated by motors or a oil pressure system - without the driver doing anything. You can design a 4+R in a more compact design, switching inside the planetry gear. That's why these been a common concept in the 1970s - 2000s.

In your transmission, there are small 'motors' that have 2 positions. We'll say on/off position. Your transmission will read your speed, how much you are mashing the gas, and load (e.g. driving up an incline). When he turns a switch, that is what the solenoids are doing. The solenoids will lock/unlock clutch bands to hold or release gear sets to get a different gear ratio. Its quite a marvel of technology. If you want your brain to hurt more, study a torque converter and how it can litteraly multiply torque. They were once called 'fluid couplings' and they can either treat fluid as a fluid OR a solid. Its crazy stuff!:)
