When I was 11 in 1957 I cut the heads off of wooden strike anywhere matches. I wanted to build a rocket. I packed the match heads in a tin 35 mm film can, and glued the can shut. I had pierced the end, and inserted a fuse from a fire cracker. Since it was a test run I had not completed the rocket. I taped it to a stick with paper clips to hang it on fishing line. The plan was to fire it out my 2nd story bedroom window down to a tree in the yard. All set to go I lit it. The fuse burned into the can and pooom hundreds of tiny flaming match heads all over the place and me beating them out. I saved the room but it was dotted with burn marks from each wooden match head. I got my assed beat for that one, but my experimentation continued.

I've seen an AMC Gremlin start a tire on fire. It had damaged rear suspension so one tire was not weighted as much as the other. The engine was a 360 with a big carb, a big cam and headers. The tires did not catch on fire every time, but they did once and it was pretty scary. Oh yeah, the tires were Firestone 721s, you know, the ones that were recalled for structural issues.

Like a rocket engine is a good comparison. I as a science teacher use matches to teach pupils how rockets work. I let them build mini rockets out of matches, aluminium foil and paper clips as starting ramps. It is always fun and interesting, because my pupils always are able to build rockets that are more effective than I thought.

A tires auto-ignition temp is about 600 degrees C as I learnt in the rural fire service. It's why we spray the wheels in a burnover because otherwise, the tires catch fire even without flames touching it, just from the radiant heat. Edit: as they said, 300 degrees C is the flame contact ignition point. Auto ignition is the temperature where it will catch fire with no external help. I.e. no spark or flame, etc... it's not going to light at 300 degrees C without help. Further edit: I want to try a billion match heads, I think the results would be a small nuke in size.

regarding the burnout myth: I think the smoke displaces the oxygen so the gasoline didn't ignite. Also I think they could have gotten their heat source to ignite the rubber from continuing the burnout on the rim and get it red hot.

The video claims that potassium chlorate is used in gun powder, but to my knowledge it isn't. Potassium nitrate is used in traditional gun power (black powder). Potassium chlorate has been used in firearms percussion caps (primers) to ignite gun powder. Modern gun power, aka smokeless powder, may contain potassium chloride (not chlorate) but only as a flash reducer but what actually drives modern gun power is (to quote from Wikipedia): "The energetic components used in smokeless propellants include nitrocellulose (the most common), nitroglycerin, nitroguanidine, DINA (bis-nitroxyethylnitramine; diethanolamine dinitrate, DEADN; DHE), Fivonite (2,2,5,5-tetramethylol-cyclopentanone tetranitrate, CyP), DGN (diethylene glycol dinitrate), and acetyl cellulose." (and don't freak out when you read nitroglycerin, when bound it's perfectly stable)

12:00 -- RE: "Cavemen first used Friction to make fire..."; *LMAO!* I love it when "Mythbusters" starts a claim by introducing another Myth. Where's the proof of this one? For a claim to compare and contrast it against: Cavemen would have learned more about the role of Friction in Fire-Making *AFTER* they had developed other technologies first, if it takes those technologies to get enough Friction. On the other hand, natural environmental causes of Fire (and ways to carry the Fire from one location to another) existed without any technological innovation required. So which hypothesis is more elegant, hm?
