Matthew Shifrin is working on a cutting edge device that makes virtual reality accessible for blind people. Shifrin, who is blind since birth, attributes his ability to innovate to one thing. Watch this short, charming talk, to understand what has been like for him to stay creative since he was thirteen. Matthew works hard to deliver exciting and ejoyable experiences to blind people in different creative ways. His goal is for every blind person to build a mini LEGO world and make the impossible possible. He also began a project with an engineer from the MIT Media Lab which recently won the MIT $15K Creative Arts Competition. This project creates Virtual-reality comics for the blind using 3D sound, and a head-mounted array of spinning gyroscopes which simulate motions such as flipping and flying. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I really admire the way of how he express himself through his voice, he has so much emotions inside him, so much thoughts, imagination, that made me think about myself and how lucky I am to see the world, to see my life Thanks

YOU’RE AMAZING! Holy cow!! I’m going into college for industrial design and mechanical engineering and you’re my hero. Keeping me inspired while expanding my mind to the experiences of others. Thank you for being you. I really hope you are doing well. Cheers everybody :) (Oh I have some ideas if you’d care to hear them. Imagine 2 beetles crawling under a rug. You could lay your hands on the carpet and feel their actions. Now imagine a computer screen with pixels that could raise up and represent movement clearly. Again you could lay your hands on the screen. Imagine two army’s clashing... or a high speed car chase or Maybe instead of just single pixels we did larger scenes that could shift and change? Maybe more than one level of elevation? Maybe we could do thermal transfer in each pixel so you can feel the warmth of a fire or a hot engine Maybe we could put sound over it and give blind people another way to enjoy media. If it was designed as a Braille e-reader it could have the precision necessary for movies and tv. I love your work and hope you continue. You’re truly inspiring I have so many new ideas.)

Thanks for watching. Mit made a device, like the one you describe, called the Transform. You can play Mario on it, and touch the playing field, so blind people can play it on their own.

It’s weird that he doesn’t use his arms to express what he’s saying.
@Rachel-sw2pw
@Rachel-sw2pw 5 жыл бұрын
If he’s been blind most or all of his life, then using his arms to express himself may not have ever occurred to him (as he wouldn’t have grown up seeing others do it) And even if he knows other people do that, he still wouldn’t have a reference of what typical gesturing looks like.
