It would look better with white legs, Lego logo don’t have that much yellow, that little bit of detail on the body and head would be enough. But it’s easy fix, I think everyone has a ton of spare R2D2s so it’s easy to get white legs.

The problem is, there's not much yellow in the Lego logo so the yellow and red of the droid are more synonymous with McDonalds.

The swapping wings are known as “Uglies” in SW and are part of the lore, usually used by pirates who take remnant pieces from space battles to build these strange mashups.

Super disappointing that no one is talking about how the astromech is named Lego and it is the logo colors. Yes it also looks like a McDonald’s droid but the fact that no one is mentioning the other side of it is is kinda weird.

I can see that, but I think the legs should've been black then to get the logo look more on point. The majority of white makes it more like McDonalds than LEGO.

What's funny about the gimmick of the wings is the engines for the X-Wing are on the wings while the TIE Fighters engine is on the main body so one gets double the engine power while the other gets nothing.

Lmfao that is so true. Also I think the swings cannons are also on the wings, while the tie's lasers are on the body. One has double engine power AND double lasers, and the other is basically an escape pod 😂

Both characters’ names are jabs at LEGO-related things. Greebling’s name is self explanatory, whereas Scala’s is an on-the-nose reference to SCALA, the Lego jewelry theme from the 90s I think it was.

These mashups were called "Uglies" back in the discarded expanded universe books from the 90s. It's actually kind of nice seeing them being recanonized under disney. Post-war groups would slap together whatever parts left over from the war that they could salvage to make anything flyable.

I just looked it up on the U.S. inflation calculator, and it says that $90 in 2021 (when the previous sets were released) is now $104.31. So, most of that increase appears to be due to inflation, and I'm guessing they just decided to round up to the nearest $10. That doesn't make the price any more palatable, though.

This set isn't about what's canon or not, it's about celebrating LEGO star wars as a theme. All the minifigs are named as refernces to themes or other lego related terms and the whole concept of swapping feels like a great way to kick start a kids imagination. Looks to me like a great set.

It is almost as if as the review goes on he starts to get them because he is actually using them rather than just thinking of them as something to stick on a shelf. He also compared the price of them new to an older set at a discounted price, which these ones will be too soon.

Also thought it was kind of funny when he was talking about how the one TIE had a better cockpit while the other one had better wings, and he was wishing they made a new set like that. The solution was staring him in the face!

@@JD-ud9qt Used to browse that old Lego star wars book (the one that came with Luke with a medal) all the time when I was younger. It's sad that star wars sets have become everyone's investment vehicle. People talk about the value being bad while still buying a UCS set for one figure.

The best part about this new X-Wing, in my opinion, is the angled sides of the nose. If they could use that technique on the 2019 X-Wing, I think that would look perfect.

I mostly agree I love the Tie Fighter and I like the X-Wing and the figures are fine but I don’t really care about the swapping stuff and I don’t like the price

@@mr.Nooblinton I think the price is decent for what you’re getting, I think it could be $10-$20 cheaper personally but it’ll regularly discount to that at various places anyway. The wings gimmick is integrated well enough to the point where it doesn’t harm the looks of the ships, it’s just a good balance of a set for both kids and adults. I respect your points

06:17 it’s not a gimmick. Whilst sure LEGO/Disney have seized on it as a gimmick idea to redo the x wing and tie fighter sets rather than just having another redo of the ships individually, these two mashed up ships do exist in pre-Disney and pre-LEGO/rebuild the universe canon. They are known as “uglies”. Fighters and ships assembled from random parts or whatever was available. They existed in post-ROTJ Star Wars after the Empire fell apart, no empire and the manufacturing facilities kind of went to shit. So ship builders started making these to use up parts they had. But some uglies were deliberately designed that way. My point is that these kind of ships have been in Star Wars canon since before Disney in the expanded universe.

Wanted to see if you recognised that not only is the droid’s name LEGO and the guy is Greebling, but also Scala was an older line of toys that LEGO made. They were larger, like dolls almost. All three characters are sneaky references to the company.

Not to mention if you swap them, all the engines go to the X-Tie. The quad engines from the X Wing and the Twin Ion Engine from the TIE are all together. The other ship has zero engines haha

You switched the laser bolts. The TIE fighter fires the green bolts and X-Wing fires red.

X wings have their thrusters in the wings so when you swap them, there is no thrusters therefore is just gliding

I love how the original characters are all references to LEGO! L3-G0 - Spells LEGO (also the colors of the figure are the colors of the LEGO logo) Yesi Scala - Scala was an old LEGO theme Sig Greebling - The community term Sig figs and the greebling LEGO technique

Scala is a reference to the old Lego Theme. Greebling is named after all the little details modelmakers use to detail models. I like the idea of this set, but wished there was more rebuilding from this set than just swapping the wings

As usual, the TIE Fighter doesn't have the grey supports on the inside of the wings. Why is this never on TIE Fighter sets except for UCS?

To me this set is good for being a vehicle builder, similar to how people say the clone battle packs are good for army building, if you want the X-wing and tie fighter builds without spending loads of money for finding the original releases then i can give it a go,i mean sure I'll toss out or sell the nothing characters from the rebuild the galaxy show but for me there is worth here,especially if i get into moc building at some point

People should really compare these lego sets to the models used in the movies. Because these 2 ships are definitely the most accurate tie and x-wing lego has done at this scale yet. The designers should be proud with this one.

I feel like the TIE got a bit shafted in terms of detail. Gone is the printed roof hatch, and even the literal reason we call them TIEs, the twin ion engines, are stickers.

I think that the TIE bomber was the test bed for the blacked out cockpit window. I have a feeling that's likely how all TIE Fighters will be from now on.

The X-Wing body with the Tie Fighter sides is similar to the V-Wing. The X-Wing's wings are also technically S-foils, S being for strike.

I love how people complain about non-canon figures but don’t complain about how putting the TIE fighter solar panels on the X-Wing fuselage wouldn’t work because the TIE’s engines are on the main pod and and the X-Wing engines are on the wings.

I think the x wing looks pretty ok tbh for its size, not so keen on the tie fighter, looks pretty squashed and goofy but u wouldn't call it terrible. I am also pretty sure this whole idea is based on an original idea from star wars legends, i remember seein ages ago how parents cobbled together and mashed up parts between the x wing and tie fighter which they have clealy now used for this concept.

When you talk about "At least we are getting notable iconic vehicles [...] these are not just random ships", it's an interesting point. Of course it's good to have new versions of Lego ties and Xwings and get to see how they improve with times, but I have to say that I really love having some new ships in my SW and getting a chance to get those in lego form. It could be a bit boring to have just Xwings and Ties for ever. Same about minifgs : new characters in SW, new figs in Lego, makes sense and it's one of the purposes of those specific sets.

The 2021 X-wing actually made an X when the wings were on attack position. This new one makes more of a >-< shape... kinda like the in universe T-85. I have both previous versions of these vehicles and I'm pretty happy with them, not too thrilled about this set...

If it's cheap enough at some point in the next year or two I might get one set, but I personally am content with the older versions as the 'upgrades' are more side grades in my eyes. But as Minifigure scale, they draw me in if super discounted 😊.

Thanks for the review, Solid! I've noticed that in certain parts of your reviews, the narration doesn't seem to match up with the footage of the model. I'm not sure if that is intentional, it just seems delayed by like 10 to 20 seconds, lol. A piece of the model will be shown, then talked about after moving to a different shot. Overall, though, awesome video!

Definitely agree on the price, I think maybe a year and a half ago through normal small sales on Amazon I got the TIE Fighter, XWing, and Obi Jedi Fighter for $100.

I was considering getting this set just for the two aircraft, but I don’t like how the Tie Fighter looks compared to the other model you showed, and the X-Wing is ok at best

I’m actually glad these ships came out and it’s cannon not a gimmick they are called uglies and there are many stories in the canon about them personally my favorite is a Tye-wing. They were usually built and used by pirates. Also Yodas starship is in the clone Wars TV series not just the LEGO Yoda chronicles that too is an awesome set.

Even if these aren't canonical minifigs, they're still minifigs, and there's a good amount of them for the set. Objectively, I don't think they really bring down the value

The helmet of the tie pilot is different then normal its missing the silver striped that go down the face

I like the idea of this whole line / series and they are so frustratingly close to making some great sets for it but they just aren’t quite cutting it for me

Really wish you had focus more on the set itself rather than focusing on the set not having the named characters that you care for but guess we all differ in what we put value in

My son’s most sought after set is the Freemakers ship, and is beyond excited about Rebuild the Galaxy. He is especially excited about these mash-ups. To complain about Star Wars TV shows and especially Lego toys aimed at younger kids is crazy too me. That being said, when that is the audience and you are charging these prices, it’s a problem.
