This is the review of the LEGO Technic 42141 McLaren F1 race car set that will be released in March 2022, but it is not a model of the 2022 McLaren F1 car. The set has 1432 pieces, and the price is 179,99 EUR/USD. Check out my detailed building review of the set and what do I think about it.
3d models used in the video were made by Ngoc Nguyen

I'm a big F1 fan, and like technic sets, so I guess I am in the minority saying that I absolutely love this set! It looks superb! I don't mind that it's not the accurate 2022 car, F1 cars evolve from race to race anyway, so you can make a thousand interpretations of a correct model. I like McLaren's last year colour scheme more than the 2022 livery so I don't mind the "wrong" colour scheme either. And when it comes to technic sets, I really don't care about the functions. I buy these sets to be displayed

I have similar feelings about it! If I just take this set as it is, I think it looks great, especially for a Technic set. Technic sets when based on real vehicles and going for realism are often stuck in this weird middle point where they look close enough but not detailed enough at the same time - I think Balazs talked about this himself in a couple videos. But I think this F1 car does actually look great in that respect. I like functions but with this one I don't care, I just want to put it on a shelf. Also I'm by no means a Technic or Lego die hard fan; I only got my first couple sets recently so that's a factor as well. And same as you, I actually don't like 2022 McLaren livery all that much compared to this. To me it's actually interesting that this model is different in lots of ways from the real one - it's this kind of alternative history thing. I agree with Balazs that it would maybe make more sense to release set like this after cars were revealed, but I think the real problem is just the messaging around it, having 2022 on the box and all that. The model itself is cool imo and I'll get it for sure. Don't really care if it's true to life :)

I agree with the point you made in the video - this set is a missed opportunity. They could have either release a fully 2021 car (like they did with SC set) or release this set later in the year - so we could get a proper 2022 livery and more real things from new car. As both F1 and Technic fan I will maybe pick this up at massive discount but still not sure about that.

Wonderful video as always. Great rundown on the ins and outs of this kit. At least it's pretty with nice suspension. A shame for all it's follies. Unfortunately as an older Lego fan re-entering the scene, THIS is my entry point and will be buying one. I have missed all the previous set iterations and I mourn for my loss. At least it is a nice parts pack for my entry into F1 Lego cars and their suspension intricacies. The tires will be a nice addition as well as I have none of these, and I love it's color and shape. I will likely try to stuff motors into it and play with it's tire arrangement with monster truck leanings. Thanks again for your detailed video, and all your insights into the kits that you show!!

Missing a traditional v6 engine instead of the mini 6L engine but it’s a huge and compact build overall that will occupy you for at least 10 hours. As a recent f1 fan and a long time Lego fan I think the fact that it’s a weird mashup of things makes it more interesting, almost like a collectors item, I’ve never built an f1 car in Lego either so I’m still excited for it even if it isn’t the most functional or accurate to the actually car. I think it’s a good looking set and the fact that it isn’t perfect makes it have a great story about all the differences between this set and the 2021 and 2022 cars, its almost like this set is its own car concept separate from the 2021 and 2022 Mclaren cars.

The big draw of technic for me are solely the functions. I love sets with elaborate functions which also very educational. The looks are less important to me. Not sure if it's already been said, but you can get the steering wheel straight. I had the same problem initially, but you can adjust it by rotating the gear above the steering rack in relation to the steering rack. Note that by the time you realise this (when installing the steering wheel) it is a lot of work to get access to the steering rack gear.
@RacingBrick
@RacingBrick 2 жыл бұрын
You can compensate it by rotating the black 12 tooth gear by one tooth, but since the other 2 gears used have only 8 teeth the steering wheel still won't be perfectly straight.

Will be interesting once the die hard Lego fans get hold of it and start adding functions. There seems to be a big space in front of the engine to move it forward to make more space for a gearbox, and an actuated DRS will be fun. Not to mention someone will no doubt add body length Venturi tunnels (and they'll probably work better than Mercedes current offer too!!!).

Interesting views… I bought this one as my first Technic set ever, simply because I’ve always liked F1 and I want this as a showpiece in my home office (I grew up in Brazil watching Senna, so will always have a soft spot for McLaren, no matter the livery or the driver’s lineup). I’m anticipating I’ll get more frustrated with the building process itself (last time I touched a Lego set Senna was still alive) than with accuracy (or the lack of) or precision… Looking forward to start building it and more importantly displaying it.

I don't mind about the Livery or design which Lego tried to merge the design and livery of 2021 and 2022. However, there are some features that I wished Lego should have done or given effort to design. The first one is the engine cover. I wished it should have an engine cover piece for those who want to display it as a real f1 car. Secondly, the front wings. It would be nice if there is a feature that the front wing is removable. Third, it would be better if there is a curve on DRS. These are the points that I have seen so far before opening the package and building one.

For me I would love to buy this as a decoration in my home as I understand why they made the choices for this set. the differences for the real and lego cars are just unforunate based on the release of this set and well, it is what it is. For the liverly the 2021 was better for me so I see this as a win-win

Got a weird feeling, that speed champions' version is more impressive and interesting. Here I really miss functions - this is a Technic after all.

I just built this yesterday. Amd after I finished step 1 I was going crazy and thinking I messed up the steering system! I was like why aren’t the wheel straight!! And I took it apart to see why and re did it all.. and they were still crooked! I’m glad it’s just it was supposed to look like that

I have finished yesterday new Mercedes F1and its looking awsome. I dont care if the livery of McLaren match I love F1 and I have ordered this set also. I hope there will be more teams in future to build up collection on my wall.

Big F1 fan and big Lego fan here - I was waiting for McLaren car reveal and video of Dany and Lando unveiling this popped up in my KZfaq and I decided I need to have it. Managed to buy it already and received it on Monday. Last year livery doesn't bother me cause I actually liked it and still have mixed feelings about current one. Car generally meets my expectations - it is 2022 spec car. As for changes they could have done - size doesn't bother me that much but would prefer it on slicks. I think that the idea behind this tires was that this are showdown tires (the tires that team can run for 100km photo session). Suspension setup child be nice if it was modular from the start to easily swap between pull and push rod but it will give me extra fun trying to rebuild it myself. I already have done ideas about improving the design and maybe motorize it. So as a set I would give it 7.5/10. But I hope will bring me more fun trying to reach 10/10. Actually if it was 10/10 from the box would be less fun (that I hope it will be)

I am both a F1 and LEGO Technic fan and I agree with you when you say that it would have been preferable that LEGO had delivered a 2021 car. As always, great and accurate review

I’m getting it because I’m a fan but do wish they at least did the 2021 livery since they didn’t have the info for the 22 season. I also will not put the wheel covers on, I think it looks better without them especially since it’s a glossy sticker. Thanks for the review!

It looks sooo good! Only thing I don’t understand are the tires… New ones came with city traktor, jeep and the monster truck pullbacks but for such a display model, especially with other cars potential of reusing them they don’t come up with new ones… Especially with so many new parts

Very cool set! Too bad it doesn't match the current car but LEGO did what they could with what McLaren provided. Love the colours and the size!

I'm a Formula 1 fan and a Lego Technic fan too. I like the look of this one and I understand why they can't pull out the new livery and be ready for the release of the model at the same time. Anyway, I prefer this colour scheme to the new Maclaren livery. I think it would have been possible to incorporate a gear box in the there with apparent shifters in the body work, that would have been awesome. Instead we get the bare minimum for a Technic set... Fair review...

This seems like a set that was designed to display alongside the other Technic 1:8 sets, where the criticism has been that the elaborate functions won’t ever be used once they’re completed, as they’re primarily display models. At half the retail price of one of those sets, it might be called a bargain, but as an F1 and Technic fan, I’m not sure that I can justify spending the money on this set due to the inaccuracies and the lack of exciting features. Great objective review, as always. Would love to see a side by side with the other 1:8 cars in the future!

If, as you say it's a display piece, then surely the look has to be more accurate. It's effectively an approximation of a generic 2022 F1 car in last year's McLaren colours, it either needs wow functionality or stunning looks, this set is sadly a bit meh on both fronts.
@Lister373
@Lister373 2 жыл бұрын
@@steveflatman yes, but in fairness it’s also half the price/piece count of the other 1:8 sets. It’s a super quirky set to be sure, but in my opinion it was worth the price charged. I 1000% respect other people’s opinion who don’t think it was worth it though! If you are saying that it would have been better still to have an accurate representation of the 2021 car, or a much delayed, but accurate version of the 2022 car then I am also in agreement with you there, but not enough to not get this one.

Before watching this review, I consider myself a very casual lego player, so casual that I don't even have one set of any lego toy. But after the watching, I find myself to be very serious about this and any other set in the future.

At first I thought this would be a very nice set, and a must have. But I’ve been thinking about where I want to spent my money and it’s probably not on this set. As a huge Lego fan and F1 fan I rather spent it on a more accurate model of a car. So I will save this money for the next super car that will hopefully be announced soon. I really hope Lego comes with a more accurate model in the future, it can also be a accurate model from last season.

I think this is an exellent set for motorization, because it has a diff and suspension already built in, and also working steering. it is also quite empty on the inside, so room for electronics. also i think it’s a good set for modification, cause you could add very much functions, just like the 42000.

Big F1 Fan here and I was super excited when I heard about this set, But these errors annoy me so much. I still am really tempted, but it is so much money for effectively a mule car... don't know if it is worth it... But nice to see that you know what you are talking about!

Huge LEGO fan who has only seen a handful of F1 races in my lifetime. I like the model itself, but after you pointing out everything in relation to the subject material, I’m disappointed. These are very expensive models so more accuracy is much appreciated. I’ll still grab it before retirement and add it to my LEGO garage.
