After seeing Nico71's lovely technic congreve clock I just had to build one myself. I did adjust it to my taste, of course, so this is a little more minimalistic. Figuring it all out was a ball! This is a very nice type of mechanism.
The rolling wheel serves as a constant time event, which drives the actual clock gear train. It is not as constant as it should be, though :-) The clock mechanism itself has a geneva mechanism for the hour hand, so it's a jumping hour.
One thing is still bugging me... it eats energy like crazy. If you wind it it will run for about two minutes, tops, so it's not a very practical clock!
Some may wonder about the base: this is not an official lego part, it's a minutebot base.

Nice clock but I wouldn't call it a Congreve, unless I'm missing something.

Excellent. Yeah I've recreated NIco's version and it goes for about 3 minutes. Not sure where he gets 15 minutes from.

beautifully minimal! *"a geneva mechanism for the hour hand"* very cool! *"If you wind it it will run for about two minutes"* you should switch from the motor to drive weights; they offer much more power, so you'll be able to increase the drive train ratio for a longer run time.... or you could try adding more motors and increasing the ratio, but, at two minutes a motor, you're gonna have to clean out bricklink of every motor in stock to achieve a 24hr run! :D have you tested the motor with larger drive ratios? it seems to have plenty of energy to lift the track, so it might have energy to spare for longer run time. try to reduce the mass wherever you can, both in the drive train and the switching mechanism. the more mass in the system, the more energy demanded. reducing the energy requirements gives you spare energy, which you can use toward a longer run time. the ends of the track look a little heavy; with a bit of redesigning, you might eliminate a significant amount of mass there. happy tinkering! ***** Thank you! Most of what you suggest I did already try. Drive weights (and the associated structure that carries them) really harm the minimal design, as would more engines. I am thinking about adding something electrical to re-wind, or drive the thing altogether. You are totally on the money about the mass reduction, I should have a go at that. The 'cradle' kind of evolved into this, but it should be possible to improve on that. Thanks for the compliments, I really appreciate that. Love your channel, by the way, lovely clocks :-)

Instead of using the windup mechanism, why not a counterweight system?
@DrDudeNL
@DrDudeNL 8 жыл бұрын
+Bricks and Gears In my opinion, this would harm the design (see previous reply). Also, it's going to require quite a bit of weight to run for a decent amount of time... (I tried a bit)

I can appreciate that. The design is really quite elegant (I appreciate Nico71's design, but yours is cleaner), but I can't help but think that there must be a more efficient source of power than the wind-up brick. Either way, this is a design I'd like to try out on my own eventually. Well done!

+DrDudeNL I think that making the cradle longer and having a more shallow incline along with a higher gear ratio would probably end up having a longer running time, although I'm not 100% sure about it. +KEvronista Does that sound right?
@DrDudeNL
@DrDudeNL 8 жыл бұрын
+YoloToTheMax104 Thanks. I have actually tried all of that... A longer cradle will have issues with bending; when the wheel is at the extreme end it will bend, which in turn will keep the wheel at the end unless you make the incline greater to begin with. It's either that or a very heavy, sturdy, cradle, which will also be counterproductive because you have to move the weight of the cradle around as well. As for decreasing the incline, you need a certain minimum to ensure the wheel will always start rolling back at the end. A higher gear ratio at the motor leads to earlier stalls. I did a lot of tinkering with these parameters and what I ended up with was the best compromise I could achieve :-)

@@DrDudeNL To get it to run long you could use a 4 pin part instead of two so instead of a 180 turn it does a 90. but that might affect the wheel not letting it get enough momentum.
@DrDudeNL
@DrDudeNL 5 жыл бұрын
@@maxdavies9958 A 4 pin part where exactly? You mean the large gears that move the rods that rock the cradle? If I do 90's there, I'd have to make the movement bidirectional instead of unidirectional as it is now, that would be more complicated mechanically.

how about a rotary engine?
@NzoDK
@NzoDK 8 жыл бұрын
+II KDriftz II Good luck to whomever can make an epitrochoidal combustion chamber out of lego and maintain rotor pressure. Since he needs to use cylinders with rubber gaskets to hold any boost, the likeliness of air escaping through the irregular design of the Wankel's chambers would be very high. Plus, what system will enable the internal gear to revolve inside the stationary gear without some sort of non-lego internal eccentric shaft?
@DrDudeNL
@DrDudeNL 8 жыл бұрын
+Nzo D-K Yep, especially about the chamber; the gear thing might be solvable, though.
