We're going over all the current discourse surrounding the Montreal Canadiens taking David Reinbacher over eventual Philadelphia Flyers forward Matvei Michkov.

We have REINBACHER and Hughes and a future team that's great. The keyword is TEAM. Reinbacher and Hutson is the best pairing and Mitchcov didn't want us, grow up!

I wish Michkov all the best in his career. Little too early to judge either young player however Reinbacher looks he is going to hold his own and then some from what we have seen in his limited AHL action

Michkov and his agent knew what teams they wanted to play on and teams they didn't. They played their hand very well. If Michkov was enthusiastic about playing on the west coast the sharks would have picked him especially if they knew he would get out of his contract early. They Ducks might have taken a shot or even the Blue Jackets. I have a feeling those picks would have stayed the same but the Sharks and the Habs might have taken him "if" he wanted to play with them...and is seems like he didn't. When a prospect doesn't want to play for a team that drafts them is can get ugly. Better it happened this way instead of dealing with the potential mess.

I can obviously see Chicago not taking Michkov, I can see Anaheim not taking Michkov, I can see Columbus not taking Michkov. Hell, I can even see San Jose not taking Michkov. After Smith though things start getting iffy.

@@jacobperez10 you look at a guy like kaprisov who michkov is compared to and the wild didn’t even make the playoffs this year, defence goes a long way and is way tougher to get than a small skilled forward always has been, and looking at the cup winners of late defence has won the cup

Not only it was a mistake but year 2023 was draft year with the pool of offensive players and 2024 is loaded with defensive player. Hughes is doing it all wrong, you pick offensive talented player in offensive talented pool. And Barron Lekohnen was another big mistake, but its ok, every GM makes stupid mistakes.

It wasn't even Hughes, Barron is Colorado GM and Lekhonen was Bergevin not Hughes. Michkov did not want to play here is it clear enough duh!! Hughe is an amazing GM and he's to draft the best player available imo. If it's a defense that doesn't matter because he can then trade of our young D for a good young forward, that's how it works.

This year draft pool is loaded with lot more talented dman than Reinbeicher. Hughes is doing it all wrong. Should pick an offensive player last year and def player this year.

@@bedbath9056demidov is pretty good lol. They also needed a right handed defenseman so only Parekh yakemchuk and levshunov would have been the right fit as well as needing more of a defensive defenseman/two way defenseman because they have Hutson. Meaning Parekh and yakemchuk wouldn’t have been good fits. And we all know levshunov wasn’t falling past 3 and he would have been the only defenceman with a higher upside then reinbacher as well as having a good roster fit. So Hughes definitely made the right move

our next 40 years will be Toronto fans pain, what's crazy to me is there isn't a fan vote, they pay there bills cause we buy Jerseys, Tickets, etc. Other then Demidov and Suzuki and a few other prospects there's nothing really to be excited about. I think our projection is a 1st, 2nd round playoff team but that's not good enough. Rince and repeat and 20 years from now well all be sitting here hoping someone gets drafted.

Hey @rogerbutchbouchard, here is just 1 of Hughe's done nothing you claim? traded Sean Monaghan twice in less than 1 1/2 yrs. Hughes got 2 1st picks & a 3rd pk along without giving up a single thing other than Monaghan's 0.70% (4th on team) PPG average while he was here........ Hughes or any other GMs from #2-#6 did not make any mistake bc through backchannels the Michkov camp made it known he just wanted to go to Philly so that's why they had to pass on him... So tired of hearing how there are regrets amongst Montreal fans that Hughes picked Reinbacher over Michkov because it was clearly not black & white as merely drafting one over the other!!! Cmon give your GM so credit!!!

Dumbest topic A shut down defensive top pairing RD is worth 2 one dimensional top 6 wingers and then some. Reinbacher is captain material, Mitchkov already sounds like a diva picking who he wanted to be drafted by. Being drafted is a privilege not a given. Let’s see when Mitchkov is taking the puck one on one with Reinbacher then we can revisit this Also training camp hasn’t happened yet, who is saying Reinbacher won’t play in the NHL this year. He has a 2 way contract does Nitchkov even have a contract yet!?

It does not change anything. It was a terrible draft choice at the time and still is. Their reasons are pretty dumb and is probably not the right reason. Don't expect them to take Davidov this year either.

History will be the final arbiter on whether Reinbacher was the right pick or not. Having said that, I'm a huge Michkov fan and believe he will be amazing for the Flyers for a long time. Perhaps Montreal gets Demidov this year as well as Reinbacher developing into the player they were hoping for, and then they can rest easy with their decision.

Scouts are quite happy with Reinbacher's progression the last two seasons. Playing on a bad team makes it hard to be effective. As the saying goes, it's hard to fly like an eagle when surrounded by turkeys. Watch the clips where he made perfect breakout passes his teammates bobbled or instances where he was forced to cover for other players blown coverage. AZ and Nashville both wanted the pick so they could take Reinbacher, this has been verified, not summoned from Twitter where everyone is sh!posting for clout. Wait 4-5 years to crow Philly fans, the KHL is not what it used to be, it is watered down without the strong imports from Finland, Sweden, even N. America.

People need to chill out. I never wanted Michkov and the Russian headache that come with him. Let just see how fast he gets to the Flyers. I am sure he would like to come but there is this guy named Putin, who controls all that is Russian. I say good for you Kent and I support him 100%. Do not get bullied in picking the next Russian superstar that only played junior in Russia, Pick for size and skill.

Fact is the Habs did not take Michkov for full reasons that only they know. Fans can speculate and I seriously doubt the team will ever fully disclose the reason they passed on him. We got a solid RD prospect in Reinbacher. Give him a few years and let’s see how he develops. Teams are asking for him in a trade so they see his potential. Having a solid D is crucial to winning in the playoffs.

Are we freaking out? I think every sane habs fan realizes a rebuild takes time and is not going to hang on the evaluation of one player. You make your choices and then make the best of them. The habs need to be making as many high choices as they can over the next two or three years to put together as good a roster as possible. They also need to see the players they have chosen for what they are. Key not to under or over value them and key to get the most possible from those players.

I understand the fans who are mad for the pick. I was at the time, but these so called fans bashing our own prospect because of management is beyond me. Be mad at the scouting and recruting dept, but stop hating on David, he didn't control the pick, support him, putting an absurd amount of pressure on him won't help.

Mitchkov wanted to play in Montreal. It was the non hockey market cities that he wanted to avoid. He met with Hughes that weekend and made it clear that he wanted to play in Montreal.

@@Statsy10 Did they say that Mitchkov told them that he didn't want to play in Montreal? No. They said that they didn't want to wait three years. Martin Lapointe, the head of scouting, said exactly that. Hughes said something similar to that.

@@leezwatz3339 We don't have a ton of evidence that he said either he did or didn't want to come to Montreal. However, Lapointe said their "were so many unknows", indicating that on top of the three year wait, there were other questions. That makes it quite unlikely that Michkov told them he wanted to come to Montreal.

@@Statsy10 You know what? I would have drafted him anyway and traded him if he had shown an attitude. Actually, the Flyers went through the same thing in 2022 with Cutter Gauthier. But, I don't see why Mitchkov would have wanted to play ONLY in Philadelphia. It would have worked out fine. But, be careful. If he shows that kind of attitude at 18, how will he respond when Torterella gives him hell? Buyers Beware I guess.

It is dramatic. The Habs power play has been 30th in the league for the last 15 years. The Habs have a shortage of scoring talent that is recognized by every hockey expert in the world. The Habs will NEVER be a contending team until we get one if not two elite scorers.... Then the Canadiens go off and choose a shut down defenseman instead of a generational goal scorer who has had better stats than Ovechkin. Furthermore, this year's draft has better, more offensive d-Men than Reinbacker. If they had taken Michkov last year, they would have been in a position to simply take the best player available this year. This error will go down in history as one of the worst draft decisions

WTF Mailloux Matheson Hutson and maybe Guhle eventually are all offensive defense. As for the power play that can change pretty quick. Just Lane Hutson by himself will bring a new dimension with his mobility/passing on the PP. You draft Demidov or Linstrom or Iginla or Eiserman this year and then you trade one our young D + a pick for a young talented forward (ex:Necas) and you sign Marchessault as a UFA and the power play has completely changed. Hughes has a lot of assets to trade and I'm very confident he will do what has to be done to improve the team significantly this year.

People sometimes can be ... ok I will be nice..... not as smart as someone' who is not stupid. Michkov was not interested in coming to MTL, he had a 3 years contract with the KHL,. he is a potential (probable) problem for his coaches, and he is weak and not interested in playing defensively. MTL picked the way they picked for Slaf, for the long term, for what a player will become and how be will contribute to an eventual winning team. If, and I believe that he will, Reinbacher becomes a top 2 or 3 defensemen for us and start reaching is potential in 2 years, we will be a great shape. A big 3 with Hutson, Ghule and Reinbacher can be the foundation for a wining team. Give the young man a chance, he has the tools, the desire and the mindset. He will get there, same as Slaf.

In his draft year Reinbacher had 22 points in 46 games playing in the Swiss league. Last season he only had 11 points in 35 games. Not a good sign that he's already showing signs of regression.

Reinbacher has never even in his draft year been looked at by any experts as a top level NHL defenseman and his play for Kloten this year was anything less than impressive unlike Mitchkov who continues to put up better numbers than his comparables at his age who are NHL stars. Go look in the mirror when you want to think of lack of hockey knowledge

Would have taken mitchkov myself but I think KH and Gordon know what they are doing. We haven’t even seen either one play in the nhl so will have to wait. Don’t know if I believe the wait time would be that crucial. In fact him coming over might be perfect timing. I think he may be a bit of a prima donna in which case they made the right call
