Using M-Series lenses on the SL2 and SL2-S opens up a huge range of both new and vintage lenses. Smooth manual focus can in fact be a realistic and highly effective alternative to relying on autofocus all the time. Nick Rains explains why...
The M-L Adapter is currently included for free with any purchase of an SL2, SL2-S or SL-Range kit. Offer runs until 30 September 2021.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Nick!! Another wonderful video, so very well explained, as usual. I started out with a CL and purchased the TL 18, 23, and 35mm lenses, I recently purchased a SL2 and the TL glass work perfectly but I haven’t purchased any SL Lenses yet. I was going to buy the new SL 24-70 Elmarit but I think you just changed my mind. I may now go with the adapter and start to build a M system lens kit for my SL2, I intend to buy an M someday (albeit no time soon as to avoid a divorce..haha) and this way I will already have the lenses. Please keep up the great work!!!!

It is incredible how sharp you can capture images with the "M-Adapter for L" on my SL2-s. I used the directions on this amazing video... with tip and info given, and WOW, my images are the sharpest I've ever taken. I used the adapter with my Summilux-m 1.4 at its widest, 1.4. Just Amazing. I can't get over how sharp images are. It is incredibly easy to focus using the on body Viewfinder eyepiece of the SL2-s. Thank you for this great video...

Fantastic information! I have an SL and SL2, using the L lenses and have contemplated purchasing several M lenses. My. mind is completely made up now....it will happen. I actually love using the L lenses on manual focus, as it works impeccably. Travel will become a bit lighter during the day with a couple of M's and I know the results will be stellar! I have the feeling this is just the start of a whole new thought process, but kind of a throw back to when I got my first ' real' camera, a Pentax K-1000 about forty years ago. This video and the information contained should be considered a must see for any owner of an S or Sl body.

It's much easier to judge focus on the SL cameras when using telephoto lenses. The rangefinder on the M cameras is accurate, of course, but in my opinion hard to judge without practice. The Visoflex helps too.

Thank you, The moment I enjoyed most was when you fitted the Leica M mount adapter to the SL and then fitted an M lens. It happened so quickly, easily and naturally. I can see where the A$680 adapter is worth the money, and of course it has the 6 point code connection. I bought a $22.50 adapter from Amazon for my Panasonic S5 (L mount) and it fitted so tightly to both camera and Zeiss M mount lens that I decided never to use it again, let alone on my Leica M lenses, in case it damages them. Same for any other non-Leica adapter which all can have the same problem, from reviews I've read. I will order the Leica adaptor from Leica Chadstone, if they really have a store there, or from Camera Lane if they have one.

Focussing is fine without magnification, and in fact the wider the aperture the clearer the focus point appears. The SL2 EVF is good enough to judge focus, but of course magnifying will always be better for critical work.

Hi Nick. Thanks for another useful video. I just attached my Summilux 50mm to my SL2 via this adapter. Although the auto mode in the lens profile chose the correct lens, the chosen aperture is not shown in the viewfinder, just a dash. Is this correct?
@LeicaCameraAustralia
@LeicaCameraAustralia 2 жыл бұрын
That's correct. The camera has no way to know what aperture you have set as there is no linkage. Interestingly, the metadata will show an aperture setting. There is a small light meter on the front, at the opposite end to the hand grip. This measures the light levels and makes an 'educated guess' of what the aperture would have been, based on your shutter speed and ISO. Clever!

Hi Nick, I am from germany and about to get my own sl2-s 😁. Thank you for your great video, best so far covering the aspect of using those wonderful m-lenses in combination with the capability of a sl2 based camera system. I would like to get an old m-lens (summilux 50mm) since they are a lot "cheaper", but is there a problem with the missing 6-bit coding? I know some of the old ones can be updated with a 6 bit code by leica (they just groove em in) but only for those with screwed on bayonets. Are there issues concerning IBIS for instance with those old m-lenses and can I find any old m-lense in the sl2-s menue when configuring manually without code connection or would I have to choose a similar newer version of that lens and it would work just fine then? So many questions 😬Thank you so much for your thoughts.

You can choose the lens from an internal menu (M and R lenses) if there is no 6-bit coding on the lens. You need to do this so the stabiliser works properly.

I haven’t tried an SL lens but I’ve enjoyed my 35, 28, and 50mm M lenses so much that I haven’t wanted to try anything else yet. I’m 65 years old so my eyes aren’t very flexible anymore so the SL viewfinder and the zoom function get me more properly focused shots than I accomplished with the M camera. I have a Nikon camera and all of my high priced lenses, for the d800, have been ruined by fungus. Under the same conditions of humidity none of my M lenses have that issue so I want to tell people who decry the M lenses as being wastefully expensive that my experience has shown that after using them for years they are still worth most of the original purchase price, while my Nikon lenses are worthless. All in all the SL is my favorite camera that I have owned and I would recommend it to anyone.

Hi Thanks again. I like your videos. They are very informative. Amongst others how to clean my SL2 sensor. That helps me a lot. I have a question for you. I saw a 2 hour video of Leica Singapore with Peter Karbe lecturing on the lens build of SL2 lenses and was a bit surprised to hear Peter stating that M-lenses on the SL2 might work well but that you probably want to stop down Summilux lenses to 2.0 to get better rendering and sharpness. As an SL2 owner with a Lux-m-35 and 50mm ASPH, I was a bit confused to hear that. In other videos, the SL2 with m-lenses is very much promoted. My assumption is that the APO M lenses would have sufficient quality looking at the MTF charts to get the best out of the SL2. Wondering if you can do a video on this subject. Thanks! René
@LeicaCameraAustralia
@LeicaCameraAustralia 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rene. I don't think any video I did could add anything to Peter's comments - he is the most knowledgable person I know on lens design. He is talking about super-fine detail captured by the 47MP SL2 compared to the 24MP M10. So it's reasonable to state that the 50mm Summilux will perform slightly better at f2.0 - the MTF charts show this on the 40LPM scale (micro contrast). However, in my experience the M lenses perform just fine, but maybe (with heavy pixel peeping) not at the widest aperture unless you use the APO-50mm or APO 35mm. Even my old 18mm Super-Elmar is fantastic at f5.6. I even have some vintage R lenses (1965 Elmarit 90mm) that stand up to use on the SL2, but you have to stop down a small amount.

I love Leica equipment but to be perfectly honest I did not find any of these images to be in sharp focus. And this has been my experience with other images I have seen online taken with manual focus lenses. What would account for this? I do see a lot of pictures on the internet that are very sharp . . . and I assume that the very large majority of them were taken with AF lenses. So is it in fact improper focus by the photographer using manual focus that accounts for the softness of images I almost always see when looking at images that were taken with MF lenses? I know from personal experience manual lenses can take extremely sharp pictures but I rarely see any when looking online. Any thoughts?

I am not sure what you are seeing when you say you notice the difference in sharpness between AF and MF images. You are looking at a low res video so judging absolute image quality is impossible. If the lens works on the CL it absolutely should work on the SL2S. Just one thing to try (long shot), turn off the stabiliser before changing lenses.
