I'm going to spend the next year shooting film photography and picked up a brand new Leica MP in black paint finish! This camera definitely lives up to the hype and is practically perfect in every way. But was it worth the price? I think so!
Of course, you don't need a Lecia to shoot film. You can shoot film on any old camera you find in a thrift shop but I've always wanted this camera so I decided to treat myself to my dream camera... For me, photography is a marraige rather than a first date. And if that's the case then the Leica MP is the trophy wife of cameras!

But to be honest most retailers are perpetually sold out of this camera. Your best bet might be to keep an eye on the nearest Leica Store and watch for stock to come in.
There are also a few Ebay sellers that have their own shops. I've purchased lenses from rangefinder.com.hk before and found them to be excellent. Fast shipping and everything arrived as described!

Many years ago, before the PM came out, I was at Sammy's Camera in Los Angeles and looking at the M7. The sales person showed me how well the camera is built by putting the body without the lens on the floor and stood on it!!! These cameras are built like a tank!!!

Thanks Hisham! I "almost" got the M-A but when a black paint MP came up I couldn't resist... Definitely like the silver M-A better than the black chrome version though... The script on the top plate is spot on!!

Absolutely agree.. had my 58.mp since 2003 .. and I still get that feeling..I’ll be happy snapping away and will just think how amazing this camera feels and works in the hand ..makes me smile 😊..

hope you're enjoying the MP as much as I have over the past 10+ years. Mine's brassed nicely from my hands and how I carry it, basically my DNA. My M11 is getting all the love right now but feels the M11 feels like a familiar friend since the dimensions are identical. I got my BP Leica MP on my birthday last year, and it has been a dream to use ever since. Not sure where you got yours, but I bought mine from Camtec Photo in Montreal (fellow Canadian here). I waited about 4-5 months, but when it finally arrived I was so stoked that it arrived _on my birthday_, of all days. Enjoy the new camera, and let the brass show (aka, enjoy using it instead of having it on a shelf!)

Mechanical Perfection :3 Right now i going to sell my Nikon S2, Leica IIIa and propobly Rollei B35 to buy my 1st Leica but cheeper one. I think about Leica M2. I'm not a proffesional photographer but the way i shoot film is like hunting crossing street and small villige. Here in Łódź in Poland there is a lot to find. What kind of scanning you going to do? I am setting up a DSLR scanning setup with Negative Supply gear, seems to be the way to go. In general the scans from Labs I have used have been hit or miss at best.

The plan (to start) is to use flatbed for work scans then anything thats good I’ll rescan with DSLR or a dedicated film scanner. I’ve been hearing good things about the Pacific Image Prime Film Scanners but would prefer to try one ibefore buying…

Looks like it's going to be a 35 Cron Asph V2 for the lens and HP5+ for film. I was always a Tri-X guy but they changed the formulation a few years back and it never "felt" the same to me if that makes sense? I've always like the way HP5 handles midtone contrast so I don't see any problems there... And then there's the price... 100' rolls of HP5+ (for bulk loading) is $90 at B&H and the same amount of Tri-X is $150! That's a pretty big difference!

@@karledwards recently upgraded from cron to lux (FLE) and I strongly suggest you consider that one…much more character than cron asph, which is not very interesting lens tbh….from Cron range however 28 asph is absolutely stellar and so crisp!

I got back into film a few years ago, now approaching 500 rolls shot...By the way, I was accepted into Ryerson's Photography program in 1987 but unfortunately I couldn't go. (regrets!). Congrats on the new MP it's SWEET!

The new m6 seems easier to find these days however the mp looks better. Is it even worth getting a mp if I’m going to mount a voigtlander 35mm on it ?

Depends on your priority, really. The MP is a wonderfully built quality instrument but ultimately doesn't affect image quality the same way a lens would. That isn't to say that shooting with an MP can't inspire you in ways that are unique. But it's not like digital where the sensor has a larger play in the image quality. Beware though! An MP body was my gateweay drug!! I was originally looking at Voigtlander lenses to save a bit of money and ended up grabbing a 35 'Cron instead! LOL!

@@sdhute It's not just these days. The cameras have been on a 2 year waiting list for a while now. My advice is to check the european stores for stock every once in a while. I got my MP from Leica Store Amsterdam and with exchange it ended up being about 20% less (after shipping and import fees) than buying it from a US / Canadian store. You might luck into finding one!

Is that a Spyderco Endura with Emerson wave feature? Plus a Leica MP, man has some taste in quality 😉 This camera has popped up at my local camera store, used but in excellent condition. Really tempted to buy it. Would you say it’s worth it?

It is, indeed, a Spyderco Endura with an Emerson wave. Unless the cops stop me. In which case it's an... I dont' know... A bottle opener? Ya, that's it!! I'm super happy with my MP so I'd say go for it if the price is right. Depending on age (you can check age if you have the serial number) you might need a CLA but then you'll be good to go!

@@karledwards thanks for the reply. They are asking 5,900 CAD. Not sure of the age but they are a reputable camera dealer and are good with descriptions (usually) and I have returned items before no prob. Only thing I’ll need is a nice 50mm lens to put on it, but which to choose :-)

There's something almost magical about the image quality I see coming out of that lens. Modern rendering with a vintage edge if that makes any sense at all?

@@karledwards I appreciate the reply and your thoughts, however I deleted all my social media 😃. I already have a Canon 5D Mark IV and various L series lenses, a Fujifilm Xpro3 and a couple XF lenses for that, and a Nikon F2A and a few Nikkor Ai lenses for my film projects. I’ve been wanting to simplify my camera gear for a long while now, and a Leica with just a 50mm (maybe a 28mm) would be all I need. My current Fujifilm gear serves as my personal documentation and general walkabout system for my personal projects alongside my film gear. While I love it and it’s fun, I still think there is something about having just a Leica body and one Leica lens and really focusing on my personal photography for that day. Cheers

Hi Mark! I'm at about 18 rolls so far and it's all been street photography. Been concentrating on one intersection in Toronto but might move to indoor venues when it gets a bit colder out. Winter is the worst!!

Well done .. film Leica is the way to go ..digital Leica is just hollow by comparison…just don’t feel right.. And yea I have experience of both .. As for M6 v Mp.. no contest… mp is far more a better camera…some of the cost cutting in the M6 has been put right in the Mp. Had my 58.mp since 2003 …absolutely love it and when I’m out and about happily snapping away .. it will still suddenly cross my mind how amazing this camera feels and works in hand …never fails to make me smile.. It’s a very simple honest camera that causes no fuss …or threat to people… Perfect… just wish I could afford a nice MA to go along with it …

My MP and M10-D are very similar shooting experiences very similar look and feel. The M10-D’s thumb rest looks like it came off an M3,2,P or -A. A brilliant addition.

Hi Danielle. The body and lens both came from Leica Store Amsterdam. MPs are still in pretty short supply but if you shop around the different Leica Stores they turn up once in a while! :)

Looks just like my M10R Black Paint. Brassing will take a while. That paint is thick. It says something about the photography hobby community when we have to start a video justifying why we chose to buy a Leica.

Going to be doing my own development and digital prints... So scanning will be an important part of the process. Looks like I'm going to be DSLR scanning to start. Will have to be careful about dust but the quality looks amazing!

@@karledwards I bought my CS5000 new years ago. Still have it. It'll scan an uncut 40 frame roll on its own so very convenient. The IR dust removal is majorly convenient too; doesn't work for B&W though. Anyhow, there's only about 20MP of detail on a 135 frame anyways. A modern digicam cam loses nothing to even the high dollar scanners like the Imacons. If you have a camera that'll do hires sensor shift hires modes you're in even better shape. I tried that a few times with my Panasonic G9. In hires mode, very high dynamic range, increased color resolution, zero noise, real 80MP output. Resample that down to 20MP as the digital negative. Excellent starting point for Photoshop/Lightroom follow-on.

Cost of film is definitely an issue... But I'm going to be shooting HP5+ and rolling my own so should be pretty manageable. :)

@@karledwards The best film for fun (cheapest) is Fomopan (Arista edu in the US), or Ultrafine extreme.

HP5+ has a lot of qualities I like but the fact that it's 60% cheaper than Tri-X was definitely factor when deciding between the two. I'll be able to experiment with different film types at the end of the one year project though!!

Ha ha! There are a ton of reasons to shoot film but the Leica MP is definitely a personal choice. The reality is that I've always wanted one and I could afford it so I figured... What the heck! :)
