For decades, photographers would use color filters to help them craft the look of their black and white images. But now that most black and white images start out digitally in color, it's pretty rare to see color filters used in photography. With the Q2 Monochrom, the sensor has zero color data and only captures the light coming in, making it the perfect use case for color filters.

Amazing comparison and good use of tech to experiment and demonstrate thee differences. It encourages me to do more experimentation, period, with my gear and learn the differences in lenses, settings, filters, etc. Thanks Benj!!!!

Absolutely genius idea for a video and so helpful!! Even gives me a really good frame of reference for what filters to use on BW film. I used an orange filter for a while not realizing just how much light it was cutting so my film was all underexposed. Now I know!

Great little comparison! This was way more helpful than all the research I did on the different Acros simulations when I first got my Fuji haha. Also, you look very cool in black & white. Like a classic movie star!

I have the B&W green filter on my Q2M 100% of the time. Yes, green is for skin tones. I would always, and still do, use the green "filter" on Fuji's Acros film simulation and just felt like everything looked right with it - including skin tones. So I carried that thought over to the Q2M and I do rather like the amount of contrast and tonality it gives the images.

thanks mate for the review; I've always puzzled by the green and blue filters. I have several of these, vintage Leica filters. My favorite for sure are the orange (for everything and almost by default) and the red for punchy and more contrast. I believe some use the blue filter to add more drama to hazy or foggy scenes. Never been able to use it though.

Good thoughts Benj. FYI, the Leica CL has a Monochrom Profile labeled BW HC (high contrast) which is engineered to give similar results to the traditional dark red filter. I suspect it may be an option in newer M10 and SL2 variants, but sadly not in my SL (601).

I have the same set of filters as you and used them on the Q2 colour in mono mode and the worse one is the green filter which made the image darker even when shooting foliage, which is as you know supposed to be best for green subjects but did not happen when shooting HP3, 4 + 5 in my film days. Perhaps it might be the combination used with digital sensors, some colours don’t work well or at all. Great video as usual, thanks

Just bought the Canon R5 and I’m selling one of my SL2S bodies due to focus reliability. I’d love to see what you think of the Leica and how it compares to the R5. Great video again, I need to buy the presets you’ve made I like them!

This is one of the reasons I still take the finicky Sigma DP2 Merrill with me when the situation is right. The Foveon sensor does an amazing job of Monochrome, arguably better than the Leica Monochrom, but you can still do post filtering like true black and white filtering. The tonal range of Foveon monochrome is highly underrated in my opinion, but obvously for your line of work it would be a 3rd or 4th option for staged portraits in ISO 100 ;) . As for my Leica, I feel like the differences between the converted Bayer and the pure Monochrome sensors are definitely noticeable when peeping but changing out filters is tedious and definitely something I try to avoid when shooting digital instead of film. But dangit, I do love the idea of a pure monochrome sensor, I won't lie...

DP2 Merrill can produce absolutely amazing photos. It’s not a joy to use and post processing is also a bit more involved bet the results are the best there are for APS-C at least if not full frame. It’s also not great for when you want to blur backgrounds but for still life, landscapes and similar it’s hard to beat. I would like to try other Foveon sensor cameras but having it in a proper rangefinder like M10 would be a dream. A dream that will never happen…
@patrickjclarke
@patrickjclarke 2 жыл бұрын
@@rATRIJS Agree. I would love for them to make a rangefinder version (since focusing has always sucked anyways) with M mount and I'd even be okay with it still being APS-C or H. Even if the DP's would have been f/1.4 or f/2 it would have helped, and that's why if they made a range finder m-mount version, I'd live with all the other quirks to get that sweet sweet tonal range.

great filter on b&w comparison video! i had a q2m for a couple weeks (had to return due to dead pixels in evf) with the orange filter (as reddotforum recommends). as it comes to q2m review would love to hear your feedback on post processing. out of camera files (i shot with about -2/3 exposure compensation again as reddotforum recommends) are quite dull, for me I found the best result was to boost exposure in LR by 1 stop and then apply TriX 400 profile in silver efex pro :-)

Just curious What your white balance settings were and if they were changed using different colored filters. What would happen if you set your white balance 5500k and tested each colored filter, if the results are the same as using auto white balance
@benjhaisch
@benjhaisch 2 жыл бұрын
A monochrom camera doesn’t have a while balance because it’s all based off of light and not color, so nothing to set there :)

That green filter is flawed, it's not down to the green light. What surprised me was the amount of detail in your face from the blue filter. I think that might possibly be down to the indoor lighting, those types of LEDs put out a lot of blue light.

@patrickjclarke

green usually makes skin tones darker and brings out blemishes and is often used to get "male ruggedness". That was the one that really surprised me in your video. I've read a lot of the cheap-o filters on Amazon are more like "colored glass" and don't filter as well as even a mid-range one. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
