I think the 50 mm APO from Leica is a great lens but the new 50 mm... they wanted to make an 'entry-level’ lens, too bad they went with the Panasonic lens for that 🙃. I have not yet had the chance to try Sigma's 50mm myself but it is definitely on my list. Sigma's 35 mm is also a very nice lens, only the vignetting is something you have to adjust all the time.

My theory is that the I-series was initially intended to be branded as Leica for the L-mount.

Thanks again, Alex. Great comparison. I use the 50 Lux-SL on my SL2, but I also purchased the Lumix S 50 for my SL2-S at less than $300. That is still a great option esp. when you do video. It has almost no focus breathing compared to the Sigmas. You must really love Leica to opt for the Cron-SLs. At that price it is a poor deal every which way you look at it. Even with the combo discount it is way overpriced. I’d save myself a lot of money and buy the Sigma or the Lumix. Or continue saving up money and go for the APOs. In my view, Leica should focus on the top end and leave the mid-range to Sigma ans Panasonic. Perhaps even throw in some combo discounts with a Sigma lens…? Make L-Mount Alliance a bit commercial as well ;-)

That’s a great comparison vid! I was not expecting that… it’s a shame that Leica doesn’t make more compact lenses for a good price… it seems you have to be able to afford the sl summilux if you want to make the most out of the sl. I personally got a sigma fp so I’m chuffed I have a potentially very good looking system that I can just throw in my bag and the guy with the $6000 sl2 will have potentially inferior images

The question is whether the sharpness is the only determinative factor when assessing the quality of the lens. I use Sony cameras with full set of Loxia lenses and Sigma 65mm and 35mm. I prefer Loxia for their colours and skin smoothness, but I also use Sigma for B+W photographs, because they are very sharp. I also use Sony lenses, zooms mainly, for work but they are too sharp and clinical. I have some of the photographs taken with all those lenses on Instagram and Facebook and if anyone want to see the results let me know and I will send you the link.

Nice review. 😄But background beeing almost identical? In my eyes the Sigma looks significantly smoother. There's less outlining in bokeh balls and the tiny bit longer focal length also makes them a bit larger as well. I'm a Sony shooter myself and I should have this Sigma in my hands today. A huge fan of the i-series. This lens beeing such sharp AND with a smooth bokeh makes it a great "3d pop" lens.

I bought the 45mm 2.8 for my s9 and I was amazed at the quality and rendering and I was thinking in the back of the head this lens feels like leica 😂 and your review on the 50 confirms my thoughts which BYW ordered one for the s9iiX body. Crazy that the Leica one is so big yet more expensive and inferior. Something went wrong over at Leica

I ended up getting the sigma for my sl2s. I do find the sigma to have bit too much of contrast straight out of camera. I do like the neutrality of the Leica even though is not as sharp. Like you said sigma is the way to go for the price and quality. Thanks for sharing

Hey Alex, any idea how the Lumix 50 1.8 stacks up in comparison to the sigma f2?

This proves that the Sigma is sharper in the centre at f2 than the Leica. But what about the corners? Also, what about other apertures? That would be the real test for a lens, unless a centred subject fully opened is one's sole mode of picture-taking.

I find that most leica sensor/lens combos I've found produce the most pleasing colors (and true to my eye) that I can find in the digital world. It's disappointing how soft the summicron is but IMO the color and overall look is more pleasing than the sigma. The real steal is the Panasonic 50mm! Those sigmas as a full kit are hard to beat.

Maybe it‘s just me but in this comparison, I clearly preferred the Leica image every time.

I prefer the color of the skin of the Leica. But, as a Sony A7RIII user, I will choose for the Sigma :-)

After watching your reviews I am starting to think that the Leica SL are really re-branded Sigma lenses.

I am not a Leica owner, but I do have the Sigma 45/2.8 in this series for Sony. I do agree that the Sigma is sharper, but in Leica’s defense, the lack of surgical sharpness is more appealing to me and works in the model’s favor. It’s not soft focus but it takes the edge off. The 45/2.8 is criticized for being “soft” wide open, but in my real life use, I think it looks fine and gets nicely sharper as it’s stopped down. Maybe that was Leica’s intention with the one you tested.

Thank you very much for your valuable lens comparison. Summicron is knocked out, but Leica's lens is said to be excellent in reproducibility of depth and three-dimensional effect. 　 I wonder if there is a difference.

Had the Lumix 50mm, got the Sigma 65mm, and while the Sigma is way smoother, and sharper, I kinda preferred the images from the Lumix, just rendered nicer. However, got the 50mm 1.4 DG DN now, and it beats both in ever single way, sharp corner to corner, bot not clinical like the 65mm, and amazing bokeh, so smooth but with character, not just like if you add a blur filter in PS...
