▪️ Editing Macro Code: Dive into Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) to fine-tune your Macros, like dynamically changing chart titles.
▪️ Adding Error Checks: Incorporate 'IF' conditions in VBA to avoid errors when running Macros on different sheets.
▪️ Saving Macros: Remember to save your workbook as a Macro-Enabled file (.xlsm) to retain the Macro functions.
In this video you'll learn the basics of Macros and VBA in Excel. Plus you learn all of this in 10 minutes! Macros allow you to automate repetitive tasks in Excel. I'll show you how to to enable the Developer Tab, which allows you to record and run macros. We'll do an example on how to automatically create and format an Excel chart based on a dataset. This dataset has different ranges so we want to record the macro in such a way that its dynamic depending on the size of the data. You'll learn to avoid a common mistake when referencing ranges in Excel. Instead of hardcoding a certain data range with excel macros we'll use dynamic cell referencing.
I'll show you what the macro recorder can record and which actions you have to add yourself to the visual basic editor. I'll add an example by using the IF statement in VBA and also referencing a range for the chart title. Learn how to save your spreadsheet so you can access your Excel macros again in the future.

One of the things that differentiates you from the rest is that you point out the "little" but very important steps in between the "major" steps. This saves so much time when first learning, because you can get the major steps right, but if you mess up a little step it won't work ( and being new to the material, likely won't know why it's not working). Kudos for another superb tutorial!

Great video. Your teaching style is exceptional. I’ve been using macros for almost 20 years and they have enabled me to provide better support to the teams I have worked with. Macros have also played a big part in helping our current small team to be more efficient and handle a larger workload. I’m really interested to check out your course. Since I’m mostly self taught, I’m sure there is a lot I can learn. I’m also hoping that I can get some of my coworkers to take the course as well.

Not being VBA fluent, I nearly always use the macro recorder to start and then clean up the code afterwards. This is a great intro-to-macros video and I wish more excel users automated their work.

Leila, you are a godsend to users searching for Excel tips via KZfaq; your presentation style is truly a cut above the rest of the universe. Regarding your tip on using the macro recorder for charting...I'm using Office365 and what I found is that, while the recorder is running, if I choose to insert a combo chart by clicking first on "Recommended charts" on the Insert ribbon, then going to the "All Charts" tab then selecting combo chart, the macro code will contain this additional line: ActiveChart.SetSourceData Source:=Range("Sheet1!$B$4:$D$11") However, instead of choosing combo chart from "Recommended charts", I choose the combo chart icon directly from the ribbon, that additional line is not added.

First learned about macros at the University 14 years ago, I was terrified of macros and vba... fast forward to now I feel I've progressed 1% creating macros, I still get stuck at times and fear messing up a file trying to edit the code in via, it can be frustrating, but explain it very simple and well! You make me wanna keep trying to get better at it thanks Leila!

"fear messing up a file trying to edit the code" Copy the code to a TXT file-eg into Notepad, Save As MyCode.txt: then you can always paste that back into VBA editor if you mess up.

Candidly, VBA code makes my hands and brow sweat . But yet again, Classic Leila explains it in a way that I understand (somewhat) but also in a way that makes VBA a bit less scary ... and intrigues me enough to venture forth into the dark world. Dynamic Tip: Ctrl-Shift-Down and Ctrl Shift-Right ... I had no idea ... love that tip and can use immediately. Again ... thank you ... thank you ... thank you ... and to state what everyone thinks, 'You are the best ...'.
