Filmed in 1992 on a DMU special from Bangor to Amlwch run by the formative Lein Amlwch group. This video has been speeded up by 4. Apologies for the fly on the windscreen, I was in a rush setting up the camera and did'nt spot the fly

Loved the video - thanks for sharing. Did a lot of travelling taking pics of trains in the UK in the 80s and 90s. Always wanted to go to Almwych, but never did. The last bit with the sheep cracked me up. Thanks again. ANDY

Great to see this again. I worked the line for the last time in the final week before the last train, with a 47/3. What a fantastic line this would be now, with passenger trains(TfW DMU) to Bangor & Chester, railtours, and steam to/from Gaerwen. Would be great for the local economy of Ynys Mon and Wales in general. Also, environmental wise to. We don't need a pointless cycleway, as a bike can go anywhere. Needs to reopen as a railway again, and do the job the line was built for!!! I retire in 3 years, and would happily drive this 17.5 mile line again between Gaerwen & Amlwch. Hope sense is seen and it reopens soon.

Why not join the Lein Amlwch group. Have look at their Facebook page for up to date info. Etc . The line has recently signed a 99 year lease with Network Rail, so things are on the up

Many thanks for showing this film, I often say that if they reopened the line for public travel, I would be one of the first to buy a ticket. So this means so much to me.

Fantastic! My brother and sister are a good few years older than me, and did travel on the train. My Taid was a guard. It is so sad to think how the line has become so overgrown when watching this. Thank you so much for posting the videos.

This branch line needs some passing loops adding in a few places making it more viable as elsewhere. A hourly passenger service would be niçe throughout the day. Some freight useage very welcome too. This is the first footage I've seen of the line, thanks for sharing it. Now bring it on, make it happen, invest in the future.😃👍

The only passing loop on the line was at Llangwyllog, there was a small loop at Llangefni, in the time I lived at the station 1961 to 1966 , the only time I saw it used was to park a temper overnight. I believe that at one time it was used for stabling horse boxes

If this lovely little railway is reopened, I hope they don't run Pacers on it. I'll be able to hear the wheels screeching on those tight curves here in Devon!!

Nice video. I remember the chlorine and bromine tank wagons along the North Wales line. I remember watching one of these heading west through Prestatyn towards Amlwch in Summer 1986. A Holyhead bound Freightliner passed through shortly afterwards. Lots of value freight through North Wales then.

Fly squash on the windscreen or not...this video makes a very interesting bit of history come to life. Many thanks...it’s very difficult tracing the old line via Google Earth nowadays, nature and man have reclaimed much of route. Regards and thanks again for your trouble. Rob

I have family in North Wales (not Anglesey) but I love learning about smaller branch lines such as this one to Amlwch - too bad it was abandoned, I get the economic side of it, but bringing them back is such a chore! This looks like it has some amazing possibilities for reopening though, given that most of the right of way is secure. The scenery on this line looks lovely; would love to see it next time I am in Wales, which may be next year or whenever the virus restrictions are lifted.

Thank you Bodorgan boys. Please advise, was this a commemorative 'special', or the last passenger fare paying trip on this branch, or what exactly?. I would have thought that the line was cut in the Breeching era, or was there some industry freight to keep it open? Kind regards.

This was one of a series of 2 car DMU shuttles that ran from Bangor to Amlwch and return in 1992 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the line. a regular freight ran to Octel at Amlwch up to the early 90s.A group called Lein Amlwch - Anglesey Central Railway is currently negotiating with Network Rail to take over the line from Llangefni to Amlwch. Over the last few years they have been carrying out track clearing work on his section. Check out leinamlwch.com

bodorganboys ; Thank you kind Sir. I've read the Daily Post article from May last year, I wish you all well with that earnest endeavour (link wouldn't work for me, but a search with those words brought up the clipping). I didn't know about Octel and bromine either, so thanks again. Hiraeth Ynys Mon. Kind Regards.

I was once in the model railway exhibition in one of the buildings at Amlwch station about 20 years ago. There a gentleman showed me a video of a train ride from Bangor to Amlwch. It showed the gentlewman on Bangor station with his briefcase that he travelled with on the last passenger journey and then again on a special like this with the same briefcase. he was something to do with the group trying tp re open the line. I would love to watch that video again but have failed to find it. Does anyone in your group have any idea?
@bodorganboys

The gentleman concerned is Walter Glyn Davies from Amlwch who's passion for the line is enormous. The video he would have shown you was called, I think, Lein Amlwch 125, and was filmed by Sutcliffe video from Amlwch. This video is my personal video of one of the journeys made in 1992

Just found the video. It's title is Return to Amlwch by Sutcliffe TV Video, no.6 Filmed during May and June 1992, when a series of DMU runs were made from Bangor to Amlwch. The line is also featured on a VHS tape called Country Branch Lines. The sequence,again filmed by Sutcliffe TV in 1964 features a run fro Pwllheli via Afonwen to Bangor then from Bangor to Gaerwen and up to Amlwch. Video was released by TVP in the 1980s. Good luck trying to find of the tapes
