Leishmaniasis: A Love Letter To A Flesh Eating Parasite | Pip Stewart | TEDxRoyalTunbridgeWells

Pip believes that: “Everyone, or everything, can teach you something” and that “teachers” may come in strange forms - even a flesh eating parasite. We just have to listen. Leishmaniasis, despite being the second largest parasite killer after malaria, is also a massive neglected tropical disease and treatment options are archaic. In this witty, powerful and at times graphic talk Pip shares the lessons her flesh eating parasite has taught her, and that we can all learn from. Pip has cycled halfway around the world (16,000km from Malaysia to London), and has a degree in Modern History and Politics from Oxford University, and a masters in Journalism from the University of Hong Kong.
Pip found herself in a relationship with a flesh-eating parasite, leishmaniasis, after a world-first, 2.5 month, paddling expedition through dense Amazon jungle. Whilst she’s a big advocate of connection she wouldn’t, however, recommend getting involved with a flesh-eating parasite if it can be avoided. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

We have had outbreaks on the Oklahoma Texas border yet no doctors seem to be willing to consider it. If you go to the dermatologist here for rosea you will likely leave with a prescription for an antiparasitic drug. If you go to the dermatologist for a parasite you will likely leave with an antipsychotic prescription.

I wonder if there's anything that can be done about the lip and tongue smacking noises that this microphone amplifies louder than even the person's voice. I have misophonia so it's really frustrating.

antimony, the turtle shell was a much safer option as are a number of herbs but she has some strange belief in superiority of her postcode
@maryodonnell5760
@maryodonnell5760 2 ай бұрын
The turtle shell treatment was easy and non toxic, and successful, her only argument against it was they hadn't researched it despite the fact it works, and they just want to stop people doing the many things that work and transition them to another medical model...the antimony treatment was life threatening, toxic, not always successful and she needed close monitoring to see if she'd even survive it, many don't and can't even take it - so she seems confused and there's an arrogance about western superiority here that just doesn't add up...

I am sure that those suffering from this disease in 3rd world countries where they can't get treatment and their faces are slowly eaten away really appreciated her poem.

The irony is they probably do a better job treating it in those countries. They don't miss the signs and know the treatment better than those who don't see it frequently. I saw a video where, in the US, the treatment cost $50,000! So, I see where you are coming from but it's a bit more complex in come cases.
