We are very fortunate to get 3 of the best tasting varieties of mangoes in South Florida- Lemon Zest, Orange Sherbet and Lemon Meringue mango. And since many friends have asked which out of these 3 is my best, i decided to taste test them today in this video. Wait for a couple of surprise appearances!!! Watch to the end to enjoy them to the fullest :)
Disclaimer: We are creating mango tastings for the 2nd year in a row and feel like sharing the same disclaimer because we still see people arguing about taste. Like many things in life that cannot be ever measured in a lab, taste is one of them. It is purely a subjective experience involving one's cultural conditioning. Exposure to certain types of foods during our childhood days, special liking of other types of fruit or candies and finding hints of them in mangoes play very heavy on the type of mangoes one likes or dislikes.
Also, the same mango variety grown in different parts of Florida (or the world) will taste different depending on changes in microclimate, annual rainfall, soil health, soil mineral and salt content, fertigation regimen (irrigation+fertilization), etc. so blanket statements about a certain variety's taste aren't welcome. Lastly, mango picked early / not fully mature vs picked at the peak maturity changes how they ripen off of tree; often mangoes picked green, hard & immature eventually change color and look nice but will not get optimal sweetness (brix) or the complexity of flavor that makes mango such a unique and tasty fruit.
Please don’t make assumptions about a variety based on your tasting of a mediocre tasting fruit! Try fruit from different places, different microclimates at different stages of ripeness.

Yes complex taste that is really indescribable is Orange Sherbet. It can be summarized as the most perfect mango in every way. Lemon Zest is 2 dimensional but Orange Sherbet goes to 5 or 6 dimensions. One cannot possibly describe in words the depths of the Flavors of Orange Sherbet. Yes if Orange Sherbet was sold by Zill before I bought all my LZ’s and LM’s and I had tasted it first I would have turned my back to every other variety. In fact whenever I want to change a variety I will now be only grafting OS. I hadn’t been able to verbalize OS’s taste till you tried and I understood it cannot be described so it can be fully appreciated. Thanks!

Your best video yet, Satya. Upstaged by a manatee! That was incredible. And the rabbit was super-cute. Very important and helpful what you had to say about meditation, too. I sat eating Lemon Meringue mangos as I watched. I find the citrus flavor concentrated on the inside of the skin, where it reminds me of lemon/orange peel combined. I've occasionally had some with bitter skin (not too often). Tell us about the growth pattern of the four trees--LM, LZ, OS, and Mallika. Which one is the most compact?
@growpuravida
@growpuravida 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching, John. Pleasure to get your feedback! Funny that in the uncut video I am talking about the trees' growth pattern and vigor but the video was getting too long:) Here goes: Mallika has been so productive that the heavy fruits bend the branches down to the ground and it has been the widest and shortest of the 4 trees. Both LZ and LM are upright growers, LZ is dense and LM is naturally less dense branching. I have had to open middle of the canopy in LZ as it is so dense. OS has lower branching compared to LZ and LM but it does have upright growth. If my OS was producing, probably fruits would weigh the branches down. In vigor, LZ is the most vigorous, flushing multiple times in summer. OS is second in vigor. Mallika is least vigorous, flushes once or twice from summer until fall then goes into dormancy until flowering.

Can we get lm and os tree in India , can we prune it .. or how about grafted ? Also i read comment section .. os is decease free .. i want to do organic ... Is lm is decease free ? I new variety in India called Pusa manohari is decease free .. Can you give me some name ? Specially those are new like ambika, arunika, arka suprabhat, arka udaya , Sindhu ... Is Tommy Atkins decease free .. i want to grow this in west bengal india
@growpuravida
@growpuravida Жыл бұрын
@Avijit Goswami OS is polyembryonic so you can grow from seed and it will come same as mother tree. For LZ you will need scion from the mother tree of this variety. LZ grows very thickly, so it is prone to fungal disease if not pruned properly and if grown in place where you dont get a constant breeze/air. OS grows with a lateral spreading canopy and it is less prone to fungal disease. You can grow both organically, we are growing them same way here in Florida. Tommy Atkins is colorful mango, tree gets big so it is not dwarf/compact and relatively disease resistant. Flesh has some fibers close to seed and by skin. Taste is classic mango taste, no spiciness. I am also growing Sindhu and Ambika but they have not fruited for me. Ambika i have heard is colorful and rich tasting. Sindhu grows very slowly here so maybe it can be kept dwarf.

They are different. You will have to taste to know. From the perspective of someone who grew up eating indian mangos i would say, one will have to have an open mind and embrace the different tastes of various fruits infused in the taste of the mango in these new Florida varieties.

If the tree is too young to flower or fruit it won't do it, it doesn't matter how much you fertilize it. The small trees with fruits in the stores are grafted. Fertilizers should be applied very lightly and when needed, they pollute our waterways. The pollution levels in Florida are already in critical condition.
@growpuravida
@growpuravida 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment Maria. I’m very happy that you’re not familiar with unsustainable practices people use to make their small trees (grafted or not) produce more than normally possible - we call it “teenage pregnancies”. I won’t stress enough how harmful it is for a tree in the long run, but people still do it to get fast results. That will require further fertilization since the tree will be weakened, and the vicious cycle begins… Unaware buyers would pay top dollar to get a miniature tree with bright plentiful fruit hanging on it, not realizing it’s not normal or healthy, nor thinking about the tree health in the long run, so the producers are doing anything to push flowering and fruiting in potted trees that are available for sale. 100% agree with you on the waterway pollution; If you watch our soil health video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aN-KnbCK1Z2bhmQ.html - you will understand that fertilization is not necessary even in small amounts for trees grown in ground if the soil is healthy - and should be very selectively used for potted plants only. We advocate recycling of organic matter grown in the garden and using your own garden life (worms, millipedes, microbes, fungi) to do the job for the trees. Glad that more and more people are interested in healthy soil gardening, we’ve seen a lot of interest since this video was published, many people are asking us how to start a fertilizer-free garden, maintain it, which makes us incredibly happy.

It is a shame you did not have a perfectly ripe LZ to compare with OS. Lemon Zest when perfectly ripe picks up more of an Orange flavor and at certain times or during certain years, it can give you more of that orange taste and very similar to Orange Sherbet, which is my favorite mango. Most people on fruit forums rate Lemon Zest over OS which baffles me but to each their own. You should do a taste test with other people and hide the names of the mango so no one will be influenced and have them all at their ripe stage for a fair comparison.
@growpuravida
@growpuravida 3 жыл бұрын
Seems like you have a lot of knowledge, we are waiting for a person like you who can ripen them perfectly all at once and do a blind tasting, maybe next mango season?
@chuckurso593
@chuckurso593 3 жыл бұрын
@@growpuravida As I said, it is a shame meaning it is not a fair comparison and you are making judgements on a fruit that is actually not accurate. Lemon Zest is very juicy when ripe and it tastes very similar to orange juice. When you have all the trees in the taste testing that you critiqued, yes, it is not a problem to get them all ripe at the same time. Plus I know them inside and out so I do not have to guess what they would be like if completely ripe. I have been collecting mango varieties for 30 years and also care for them professionally.
@growpuravida
@growpuravida 3 жыл бұрын
I understand your perspective. If only a perfect mango variety would always taste perfect, there would be no need for tastings. I am familiar with lots of mango growers in tropical fruit forum who have been growing mangoes for many many years, and still argue about taste… I get saddened and surprised to see how their vast knowledge of a certain variety’s taste clouds their “here and now” experience of the mango on the table in front of them. I always taste with my tongue, not with knowledge (that many “growers” and “experts” do); if we know how a certain variety tastes at its peak we won’t need any tastings; the whole beauty of tasting , the experience of tasting a certain mango on that day, on that morning, in that mood is not needed if everyone knows everything about that variety of mango, in and out...please familiarize yourself with my disclaimer; we had people like you arguing about taste who, upon reading the disclaimer, understood what these particular tastings are about… Another clarification… I’m not judging, or critiquing, a variety; i’m describing each specific fruit on the table, not a hypothetical fruit of this specific variety - i saw many people doing it on youtube and in person, and it’s quite disturbing, they tell things that they remember from a mango textbook, or recollecting the taste of a mango they tasted a while ago, not what their tongue tells them in the moment = in my opinion, this kind of feedback/tasting is not a tasting, it’s a sham…. "I do not have to guess what they would be like if completely ripe” - that’s exactly what I am against; KNOWING a mango taste and not EXPERIENCING it… with a preconceived knowledge of a certain mango you are robbing yourself off of the experience of tasting the fruit right in front of you… Also, i haven’t met a grower yet (and i met so many in the past 4 years tasting mangoes, both on my coast and yours) whose each fruit of same variety comes excellent and is tasting the same - they’re all different, and in my opinion, that’s the beauty of it and that’s why we can endlessly taste mangoes of the same varieties, and share experiences, and they always tell us a different story… Watch our Lemon Zest tasting from last year -in this video it was perfectly ripe :) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qa6Tq7mfsae0k3U.html So, getting back to our discussion: since you have so much knowledge of mangoes, i honestly believe you should start your own tastings, we need some from the Gulf coast area, we have a few growers doing already on our side...would love to see someone like you organize a blind tasting with all these varieties perfectly ripened on your trees and the trees of other fine growers and put it on youtube ? A clean, epic experiment to end up this never-ending argument about mango tastes?
@chuckurso593

@@growpuravida Taste is a matter of personal preference. All I was stating is that you did not have LZ at the right time which you did mention. But it was not given an accurate description of what it truly has in it's offering. I believe in order to evaluate a mango properly, you need to give it 3 years anyway, to show it's worth and it has to be after that tree has been in the ground at least 5 years. To many people push fruiting at too young of an age. I pushed Pickering very early because it was a scrap mango tree and I was only using it till my upper tier mango trees got big enough and then I sold my trees back to my friend Steve at Fruitscapes. He has all my trees I decided to part with. As far as Taste testing mangoes here? it is too one dimensional and easy. Anyone can produce a mango for they are very easy to grow. More importantly is the need for sustainable food crops like heirloom tomatoes, Romaine lettuce with a crunch, spinach, broccoli, and all the other foods that are life sustaining. Mangoes are a nice fruit to have and play around with but balance is the key. After 2 or 3 mango trees in a persons yard, they are best to balance it out with other fruits so they have year round production and no waste.
