In 1983, 60 Minutes correspondent Morley Safer reported on the story of Lenell Geter, a young, successful engineer who was sentenced to life in prison for armed robbery. Safer and producer Suzanne St. Pierre, who died earlier this month at age 88, dug into the case and saved Geter's life.
"60 Minutes" is the most successful television broadcast in history. Offering hard-hitting investigative reports, interviews, feature segments and profiles of people in the news, the broadcast began in 1968 and is still a hit, over 50 seasons later, regularly making Nielsen's Top 10.

An engineer with no record making over 25k per year in the early 1980s and decided to rob a restaurant on his lunch break seems bogus

And this is exactly why people don’t trust police or DA’s!

This is the sole purpose of investigative journalism. To find the truth and punish corruption. Well done 60 minutes! I remember watching this story when I was 12.

That $24,000 was equivalent to about $77,678.42 in today's economy. I doubt he needed to rob KFC customers. Man, I miss reporting like this. 60 minutes was the absolute best.

This is one of 60 minutes' best pieces. Thank you for being instrumental in Mr Jeters release. Bravo.

A very sad story, trying to pin a crime on a innocent man with no criminal history.

I recalled the Geter story then, in 1983. When 60 Minutes did his story, Geter was out of prison in one week! His case was subsequently dropped. Geter and the late Mory Schaefer became life-long friends. In fact, Geter invited all of 60 Minutes staff to his wedding.

This is the most egregious miscarriage of justice I have ever heard of! They railroaded this man and then doubled down on their own stupidity and lies!

Geter lives in South Carolina, he now dedicates his life to pre-trial programs for youthful defenders. Really nice guy

Ok.....he was released with days of 60 minutes report....bravo for 60 min!!! .....but now, why wasn't the prosecuter at least investigated??? Why was the judge not at least disciplined for not allowing the defense ONE week to prepare his defense? CORRUPTION AT ITS BEST

These cops lie through their teeth and will never accept being wrong. Those areas had a reputation for bad law enforcement with biased reputation. I applaud 60 minutes and the late Mory Safer, one of the great journalist of the times. A man's life was restored. We should all be aware and mindful about the corrupt nature of law enforcement.

How they can’t admit he’s innocent is bizarre. They’re being given all the evidence that was withheld and STILL stand by their conviction. Pieces of shots
