The Russian monarchy had to come to an end after the miserable defeats in WW1 and the blockade of resourceful resolutions for the economic and social problems of the Russian people. The luxurious lifestyle of the royal family was at the expense of the Russian treasury widened the gap between aristocrats and land owners and the rest of the people leading to social radicalism and hence the revolution and the end of monarchy.

Nicholas should've never been Tsar. He and Alexandra needed to be removed for a good reality check, but what happened to them and their family was pure evil. They were ignorant and too stuck-up with their ancestors' ideas, but probably not cruel. Lenin, on the other hand...

All I can say is that the Tsar had his failings but he was a far far better person than the monsters who came after him. But unfortunately for Russia his failings would ensure that the monsters would come.
