Heavyweight champ Lennox Lewis reflects on Mike Tyson's career decline in boxing after he was released from prison. In his later boxing career, Tyson lost his killer instinct and just fought to provide for his family and fought to pay the bills. This was later revealed in his post-fight interview after his last match as a pro boxer.

To be fair he fought Lewis in 2002. The wheels started falling off of Tyson's career way back in the late 80's. Spinks was his last truly great fight and that was 88. People don't realize that the dominant Tyson period they all talk about was only a few years. It really started when he knocked out Berbick in the second round and became the WBC champ. Some even argue as soon as he beat Berbick he started slipping. Then he faced the other two world champs James Smith and Tony Tucker but they actually took Tyson the full 12 rounds and exposed him a little. Then he beat Tyrell Biggs, Tony Tubbs, Frank Bruno and a 38 year old Larry Holmes. Then he obliterated Spinks and it was kind of over from then. About two and a half years beating mostly average fighters. By the time he fought Lewis he was totally washed up. He only fought three more times after Lewis and lost two of them to absolute nobodies.
@shaunbat5097
@shaunbat5097 4 күн бұрын
Correct, from 88 he never fought that way again once his youth left him. From 95 took MT seven years to eventually fight Lewis, after paying him step aside. Compare their CVs, but I'll say again MT had phenomenal style 86/7/88 At 38 he never fought the no 1 he chose low grades McNeely Mathis McBride. @@SonnyK248

Actually if he had stayed with Rooney and Jacobs he would have stayed the Tyson that stormed through the heavyweight division of the 80’s. Once he fired Rooney his training went down the toilet and he went from the best counter puncher of all time to strictly a power puncher. This did not happen completely until his release from prison in ‘95 in this fight with ruddick in ‘91 there were glimmers of the bobbing and weaving. The other big factor was signing Don King as his manager, Don used Mike for money and didn’t care about his well-being as a fighter or person as Jacobs and Clayton had during his first years. Had Mike stayed with the crew he beat Spinks with I personally think he would’ve been better than Rocky Marciano’s 49-0 possibly even better than Floyd 50-0 but he definitely would not have lost to Buster Douglas or Holyfield.

He pressed hard to fight Mike Tyson for the WBC in 96, forcing Don King to pay him £4 million step aside money promising that the Tyson-Lewis fight would be more lucrarive after Tyson beats Holyfield and becomes undisputed champion. Unfortunately this is how boxing politics typically unfolds. Don't forget he also wanted to challenge Bowe in 94 but Bowe threw the belt in the bin instead. It was mostly champions avoiding Lewis and not the other way round. With regards to Holyfield, Evander wasn't seen as a big deal fight until Holyfield had beaten Mike and Lewis happily stepped up.

Dude, Lewis got knocked the FK out by two weak dudes… Lewis is a great fighter, I got mad respect for him, but even he just admitted he didn’t fight the animal Tyson. Holy field didn’t get the animal Tyson either. Holyfield got post prison Tyson. Lewis got post suspension Tyson… the weakest Tyson of them all. 😂😂😂 they all peaked at different times. Animal Tyson was world heavyweight champion at 20 years young… then his (boxing) father died and that fked him up. Holyfield started to rise.gained the title and lost it. Iron Mike got out of jail and regained the title, Holyfield took it. During that time, lewis was rising and got knocked the fk out by a weak dude. Regain his little title then fought to a draw with Holyfield. Won the second fight. Got knocked the fkin out by some weak dude. Regained the title and finally beat an old no hearted iron Mike. Holyfield beat the great Big George Foreman. That to me is the most impressive victory of all three of those fighters. Iron Mike Knocking the Iron chinned Larry Holmes the fk out was a really close second. Holyfield beat him too by not in the same impressive fashion. Mike Evander and Lennox are all about equal in terms of greatness, but Iron Mike is the most legendary. Becoming heavy weight champion at 20 in such devastating style… knocking out an undefeated champion to unify the belts, knocking out the unknockoutable Larry Holmes, almost killing marvis Frasier in 30 seconds… if Holyfield and lewis fought that Tyson, they’d have been knocked the fk out too… I rank Evander second because he beat Big George who is a top 5 boxer of all time. And then Lennox lewis. Weird because lewis is the one with the best head to head record against the other two, but context matters. 1) Ali 2) Rocky 3) Louis 4) Big George 5) Tyson 6) Holyfield 7) Lewis 8) Smokin’Joe 9) Larry Holmes 10)Tie: Jack Johnson & Wladimir Klitschko & Tyson Fury

Tyson was very vulnerable when Cuss died, that's when the vultures started to circle. He was one of the most dedicated and disciplined boxers to bless the square ring. He was obsessed with boxing, it was his life. True that he was an early bloomer but that bloom would have resigned for another 5 years had Cuss not passed. He was surrounded by people who were only there for his money. King and Griffith to name 2. They had a lot to do with his demise. Big ups to Lewis, spoken like a true Champ!
