November 11th, 2000. "Royal Rampage" was an Undisputed World Heavyweight Championship showdown between “The Pugilist Specialist” Lennox Lewis and the monstrous punching No. 1 World Heavyweight contender David Tua.
Lewis’ IBF, IBO & WBC World Heavyweight Titles were up for grabs.
Prefight records; Lewis 37(29)-1-1, Tua 37(32)-1.
In March 1999, Lennox Lewis dominated Evander Holyfield in a fight for the Undisputed World Heavyweight Championship where the IBF, WBA & WBC titles were on the line. However, Lewis was blatantly robbed of an apparent victory as the official verdict was a highly controversial 3 way draw.
8 months later, a rematch took place and Lewis earned his rightful nod this time; outpointing Holyfield over 12 rounds to become the new Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion.
In April and July 2000, he successfully defended his Undisputed World Heavyweight Titles via 2 easy 2nd round KO wins over top rated Michael Grant and Frans Botha respectively.
His next defense was set to be against the devastating David Tua. It was Lewis’ 3rd consecutive title defense in the same year against a highly rated challenger.
David Tua aka “Tuamanator” was considered to be the 2nd best heavyweight in the world at this time and often compared with a prime Mike Tyson. Although Lewis was a 3-1 betting favorite, many believed Tua’s vaunted left hook would pose a serious threat against him.
Expectations were sky high as the boxing world anticipated the possibility of one of the Greatest World Heavyweight Championship Fights to take place.
Entering the bout, Tua had commendable wins over Darroll Wilson, David Izon, John Ruiz, Oleg Maskaev & Hasim Rahman.
On the other hand, the veteran Lewis had beaten a great number of top oppositions in Gary Mason, Mike Weaver, Tyrell Biggs, Donovan Ruddock, Tony Tucker, Frank Bruno, Phil Jackson, Lionel Butler, Tommy Morrison, Ray Mercer, Oliver McCall, Henry Akinwande, Andrew Golota, Shannon Briggs, Zeljko Mavrovic, Evander Holyfield & Frans Botha.
From the early goings, Lewis set the pace from long range with his jab while Tua applied constant pressure in attempts to cut off the ring and pin Lewis to the ropes.
Tua enjoyed some early success as he connected with a couple of power shots particularly his left hooks but Lewis took the shots well.
However, as the fight progressed into the mid rounds Lewis gained total control of the action with his jabs and long right hands that kept Tua at bay, coupled with an impregnable defense to outclass the discouraged Tua who had no answers to the elite skills of the Big Brit.
Tua was not known to cut or bruise easily but after 12 rounds with Lewis, his face was reduced into a swollen bloody mask.
The outcome was a lopsided UD12 for Lewis who retained his Undisputed World Heavyweight Championship for the 3rd consecutive time against the 3rd top notch opposition in the same year.
Overall, the fight was a highly anti climatic affair and failed to lived up to expectations; the crowd booed throughout the 2nd half due to the lack of continuous action particularly by Tua, who seemed disheartened by his inability to finish Lewis with one punch. Many reportedly walked out of the arena before the fight ended.
“Hundreds of fans are streaming for the exit. They’ve seen enough to know who’s gonna win the fight, and they’ve seen enough to know what the 12th round is likely to look like”.
- Jim Lampley
Some had expected this fight to be stylistic preview of how a Lennox Lewis vs Mike Tyson clash might turn out. Oddly enough, when both fighters finally met in June 2002 it was similarly one sided in favor of LEwis who dominated Iron Mike en route to an easy KO8 win.
However, it should be noted that Tyson was well past his best at that point.
According to CompuBox stats, Lewis landed nearly triple of Tua’s connect rate at 300 to 110. And out of the 300 connected shots, 213 were jabs.
Hope you guys enjoy this highlight of a brilliant performance by one of the Greatest Heavyweights of All Time, and be sure to SUBSCRIBE for more boxing goodness.
Muchas gracias and keep punching!

Lewis uses the jab as good as any HW ever. He uses it as a range finder, he uses it as a power jab, he uses it to pop shot you and stop you dead in your tracks because he doesn't ever fully bring it back, keeps it half way, and manipulates your movement with it to load up on the right. Wonderful fighter and top 5 HW of all time.

@@Watchwith_ello it wasn’t the jab. It was the fact that Lennox Lewis landed two clean right hooks that hurt and stunned and scared David tua at the start of the fight. Same could be said for Tyson for just about all his fights. Same fighting style and so-called "physically disadvantaged" but it's funny how that never applies when that same short stubby elusive animal slugger is looking virtually unbeatable as they maul through the competition, until a more polished superior boxer finally steps up and hands them their defeat.

Such an excellent example of cerebral boxing by Lennox... He fought his fight... He wasn't trying to knock him out just land nice clean punches. The force a big man can hit with when simply concentrating on speed and accuracy is enough in its self... Plus his absolute confidence in himself made him extremely calm and therefore allowed him to stay fluid i.e. no tensing when throwing shots... Do it for long enough and it simply becomes too much for your opponent. Should be Sir Lennox Lewis... IMO

I don't think so. Just look at how much he let's himself get tattooed . He doesn't have great head movement he has subpar defense . I mean he has a decent jab he moves his feet ok but when you line him up with some the all time great heavy weights in there prime , this boy would get washed. Tht's why i didn't like when Lennox or Holyfield fought Tyson, he was just a shell of himself and they capitalized off the opportunity to fight Tyson. Having had dealt with jail time legal issues and mentally just wasn't the same Cus DA'mato trained Iron Mike. They beat a Tyson tht was depleted of his best attributes . I'm just saying. I think Lennox and Holyfield are all time greats i just don't think they're as high as some analyst puts them.

Lewis was truly a dominant force. I can remember that after Lewis regained the title against Rahman, he was getting the Yankees and Lakers pub on ESPN. It is just a shame he wasn't appreciated his whole career. In my opinion, he is arguably in the conversation for a top 3 Heavyweight of All Time. He would have done the same thing to a prime Tyson, Lewis only got more dominant with age. The jab was remarkable, the footwork, the chin was his only downfall. If you knock him down, chances are he isn't getting back up. Perfected his craft until he retired. He was landing very vicious shots on Vitaly in his last fight. The last man to win a round from him. I gave Tua three rounds in this fight, I gave Tyson the first and ONLY round. I had it 117-111 for the first Holyfield fight and 115-113 for the second. The last heavyweight to beat every man he faced...including the avenged losses.

Tua steadily moved into Lennox's power hand. Looking to "hopefully" slip it or eat the shot to try and get close. What we saw was Lewis constantly being wary of throwing it unless absolutely sure it could land, using his extraordinary reach advantage in this contest. Ready at any moment to ride the bike backwards away from Tua. Tua was not outclassed. He had a 70" reach. Stayed the course, showed heart, and consistently tried to land some good shots on Lennox Lewis.

There's always a pathetic excuse made by Lewis haters everytime he beats someone good. For Tyson and Holyfield, they were "past their primes". For Michael Grant, he was "scared of getting hit" after the Golota fight. For Golota, his doctor gave him "the wrong injection" before the fight. For David Tua, he "broke his hand" before the fight. For Tommy Morrison, he lost because he had AIDs (although that wasn't a problem when he fought and beat Ruddock and Foreman but it's somehow a problem when he fights Lewis). For Razor Ruddock, he was "never the same" after the Tyson fights. Lewis is one of the greatest boxers of all time and casuals still don't give him the respect he deserves.
