APPROACH WITH CARE AND CAUTION. Don't break your laptop! And don't blame me if you do. If in doubt, go to a professional.
How to change or upgrade the hard disk or access the RAM and bios battery on a Lenovo B50-50 (Model 80S2) laptop.
The procedure takes at least 16 minutes, probably longer if you are new to opening up laptops. This video shows you how to remove the keyboard, battery connection and lower cover to access the motherboard, hard disk, bios battery and RAM.
This is the first mainstream PC I've come across that doesn't have a user changeable or removable battery!

Why, when I want to do any jobs like this one, do I ALWAYS look for a British guy to cut to the chase and take me through the work in a quiet workman like manner. No 'Hi guys, what's up guys' just a calm confident voice. Many thanks.

Thanks for this video. I am an IT-tech myself and did not actually spend any time on the B50-50 after seeing this video (was just upgrading my kids old computers today). Just finished they B50 and that was a completely other computer! Shocked about how different the B50 and the B50-50 was. I bought these two computers a year apart. Have opened many computers, the only one that was almost this bad was one of the old Fujitsu models.

Absolutely superb video. Very well filmed and put together. What an absolute pain this laptop is. I have dismantled some tricky laptops in my time, but this one is awful. I did decide to gently warm the keyboard area with a heat gun (very carefully and from a good distance) to try and loosen the glue slightly. I am not sure how much it helped, but its something to consider. I needed to replace the battery on this one and found that the connector on the replacement did not want to go back in the socket. In the end I plugged and unplugged the old one a few times to try to loosen the socket up a little, and then plugged the new battery in directly, (ie before reassembly) a few times until it would go in smoothly. Thanks for making the video, its one of the best laptop disassembly videos I have ever seen.

Glad it helped. Macrium reflect is the easy way to clone but once cloned you might need to use the macrium rescue usb to repair boot issues. Or install windows from fresh and copy over your old data from the old drive manually.

Thanks for this as I was given one of these to repair and although I've been repairing laptops for years, this one baffled me at first. I have never seen such a poorly designed machine for accessibility. Stripping out the keyboard and removing the case to change a battery !!! ... I'm truly cured of Lenovo forever. Cheers for your video though, it helped greatly.

This is really helpful thanks! - Of all the Lenovo laptop models I have ever worked on this has to be the biggest pain. Also having to remove the best part of 20 screws to upgrade the ram / hard disk is a joke. Why is the battery not removable with out dismantling the whole thing!

Glad it was of use. I made the video because I also found it painful to work out how to get into the machine. Additionally the service manual that comes up when you Google doesn't actually match the machine that I had! Not sure I would buy these machines again.. unimpressed with the power socket / connector too, looks very easy to break.

Very helpful! I strip many laptops in our shop but was doubtful about the rigid keyboard (is there a hidden screw?, I thought) until I saw the semi-adhesive strips in your video. I find an old credit card splits the case effectively, and it helped unstick the keyboard, too. I checked the fan/heatsink, just 2+2 screws to undo, and removed a whopping dust plug from the fan/radiator interface (this lady needs to hoover more!) so do look while you're there. I used fresh heatsink paste but there was enough original overspill to redistribute at a pinch. The duff hard drive was evidenced by repeated boot-looping as the unhappy BIOS sought a network boot. Using a Linux-loaded USB flash drive, I booted straight to Linux desktop and confirmed the Toshiba drive wasn't mountable. It later proved u/s, so an SSD went in. The original RAM is a measly 4GB in the one slot-I popped in an 8GB instead. An SSD, and more RAM, noticeably brighten this i3's performance.

I've just dismantled one of these due to a failing HDD... it's by no doubt the cheapest, nastiest laptop I've ever come across... it's obviously been designed as a cheap disposable device! P.S. Regularly check all the screws on the base are all tight as they like to come loose and fall out, especially the ones that secure the screen hinges.

@freename

It was just a cheap tool set (as both of the ones I've had over the last 20 years have been) from a petrol station.. Lots of different types of screwdriver within it and I pick the most suitable screwdriver at the time. Something a bit like this: m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81DZ6y0U1dL._AC_SL1500_.jpg Neither have cost more than about £15 / £20 :D They are poor quality but ones I'm happy carry around with me and getting wet, rusty and potentially losing or forgetting them somewhere them occasionally.

i'm a computer engineer and find it really annoying how on some laptops you have to disassemble the whole computer to get to the bloody thing, yet with some laptops, most notably older laptops it's simply two screws, flick open a bottom tray cover and voila. Would be nice if all manufacturers made it that easy to get the hard drive in and out. At the moment I've got a corrupt volume on C: and NOTHING works, Windows 10 repair, cmd prompt, nothing wants to see the C: drive so I've got to back up and that means having to go through all this palava on my customer's laptop!
@freename
@freename 5 жыл бұрын
Agree, but if manufacturers can save $0.80 in screws and moulded plastic covers they will. And the frustration also means people replace sooner rather than repair or upgrade. It's a win all around for computer manufacturers.

In the model in my video there is only one RAM slot. It looks like there is a variant that has the RAM soldered onto the board, on that version the RAM slot might be free and available to put memory into. I'd likely guess that if you have the exact model number mentioned in my video title - you can only have one stick.

What's shown in software might not be what is actually available on the board. If you see in the video just below the ram slot are 4 pads that look like they might normally have RAM chips soldered on them. That might count as the "empty slot". I think you will only really find out if you open up the laptop and look for a spare slot.
