My Lenovo Legion 5 laptop 15ACH6H (2021) configuration came with only 16GB of DDR4-3200 RAM (2 sticks of 8GB each). It seems to be enough for most modern day applications and games. But on another hand there's time when it could have used more memory if it would be available, for example running a game and having multiple browser windows open at the same time.
First, I've decided to upgrade my Lenovo Legion 5 laptop with another 32GB RAM stick pairing it with the original 8GB from Lenovo. For the 32GB RAM module we'll be using a Transcend JM3200HSE-32G DDR4-3200, 2Rx8, CL22.
Then I have decided to upgrade it to the maximum supported capacity of 64GB and see if it's actually of any benefit to have such huge amount of RAM in a laptop.
This will be a complete guide on how to install more memory in your Lenovo Legion 5 laptop including a full disassembly procedure, review of the installed memory and comprehensive speed test of different memory configurations.

I think you can actually go higher the max is just the tested stable maximum lenovo tried in factories, just like the manual says only 32gb ram is supported but you can use 64gb I think even 128gb would work (but that is overkill) and I think you could even put 2, 4tb nvme's in and they would work fine it's just that lenovo didnt 'test' it

A quick question. I just upgraded my SSD's. Should I get a heatpad for the new second NVMe SSD (and if yes, where can I buy one)? On the left side I only had a tray for a sata SSD which I removed so I can install the second NVMe SSD.
@PulsarTECH

If there's another M.2 NVMe slot then you can install it. You can use the default heat sink that comes with the laptop or if there's one on an SSD already just use it. If your SSD came without the the heat sink, I would recommend looking for one in any computer store online.

I'm a Tech newbie, about to buy a Legion Pro 5. I've seen other videos with a 13700HX CPU that couldn't handle the 5600mzh 2x32GB. Should i buy the 13900HX for the 5600mzh or should i just to for the 4800mzh RAM? And does the warranty from lenovo expire when i modify the laptop? Hope you can help me out! :)
@PulsarTECH
@PulsarTECH 4 ай бұрын
Hi, as a tech newbie considering purchasing a Legion Pro 5, you might want to carefully consider your options regarding the CPU and RAM configuration. The choice between the 13700HX and 13900HX CPUs largely depends on your specific needs and budget. While the 13900HX may offer better performance for tasks that require high processing power, such as gaming or video editing, it also comes at a higher cost. If you believe you'll benefit from the additional processing power and can afford it, the 13900HX could be a worthwhile investment. Regarding the RAM speed, opting for 4800mhz RAM may be a safer choice if you're concerned about compatibility issues with the 5600mhz RAM. While higher RAM speeds can theoretically offer better performance, they may not always be fully supported or optimized by all CPUs and motherboards. Therefore, choosing the 4800mhz RAM could potentially reduce the risk of compatibility issues and ensure smoother operation. As for the warranty from Lenovo, modifying the laptop, such as upgrading components like RAM or storage, usually does not void the warranty, but if you're worried, you can consult with their customer support to understand how modifications may impact your warranty coverage. Hope it will help!

@PulsarTECH

Hi, if you have a ddr5 memory it should be even faster than dd4, at least in theory. As far as the memory size, I'm happy about this upgrade because now the laptop doesn't run out of memory even during most demanding projects in Premiere Pro and honestly it uses way more memory now which makes me think that before it was trying to shrink memory usage due to its lack.

Your laptop appears quite similar to mine, albeit one year newer and equipped with an Intel processor. While I don't anticipate any compatibility issues with this RAM on your laptop, it's challenging to predict definitively as compatibility depends on various factors. Nevertheless, there's a good chance it will function without issues.

@PulsarTECH
@PulsarTECH Жыл бұрын
Hi, that's true and in case for the 8GB RAM modules you can't say a 100% but usually anything more than 8GB such as 16 & 32GB RAM sticks are dual rank. Less than 8GB most likely single rank. Hope this helps!

@lovechcitizen4448 Жыл бұрын
@@PulsarTECH ok so any brand thats dual rank will give me a better performance than the stock ram?
@PulsarTECH
@PulsarTECH Жыл бұрын
@@lovechcitizen4448 no necessarily. The difference in performance is not much between the dual and single rank. Better look for a higher frequency (like 3200 MHz is optimal), and lower CAS latency. But in reality, we are not talking about a huge increase in performance. If you don't do benchmark tests everyday, it's will be hard to notice any difference in performance. But on another hand more capacity is really helpful.

Hi, make sure that your laptop supports PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD. Lenovo Legion laptops 2021 only have PCIe 3.0 but since PCIe 4.0 is backward compatible with PCIe 3.0, you can still use it with that laptop as well. If the price is the same I would choose the PCIe 4.0. But the latest PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs are pretty expensive.

The specs that you've shared is for the desktop computers RAM. If you would like to upgrade your laptop with the 64GB of RAM, the best you can get is CL20 from Kingston Fury is believe. And the voltage is 1.2V. 1.35V is used for the desktop DDR4 with an XMP profile (basically overclocking). Hope this will help.

While it's not uncommon for users to try exceeding the officially stated limits, attempting to install more RAM than officially supported can lead to unpredictable behavior, and the system may not recognize or utilize the additional capacity. No ,it's not but if you're doing anything like video editing or 3D work then the laptop can benefit from having extra amount of RAM as you can tell from the video. I think 32GB is plenty for 90% of the cases but since the RAM prices are pretty acceptable then why not use it. I'm sure if it will be possible to get 128GB of RAM on a laptop such programs as Adobe Premiere Pro could use it for example when working with 4K or higher footage.

Does the Lenovo legion slim 5 support 64?
@PulsarTECH
@PulsarTECH 6 ай бұрын
Hi, whether a laptop supports 64GB of RAM depends on its specific hardware and motherboard design. You should check the laptop's specifications or user manual to confirm the maximum supported RAM capacity. What is the exact model and year of your laptop?

Hi, I have the same Lenovo Legion 5 15ACH6H and it supports 64 gigabytes of RAM. For some reason, the manufacturer doesn't specify this in their documentation. I think this is the same case for you.

@@sandoxxx7623 yes, same as mine, then it should support 64GB of RAM. Plus you've got a Pro version of the laptop, so I think it should be even more sophisticated than non-Pro version like mine.

I use a lot of virtual machines and software that demanda a lot of RAM. So the 64Gb is worth it

isnt 32 enough ? 64 is to high for my budget , the 16 build in i think its getting a lil behind , or wait till black friday and go for 64?
@PulsarTECH
@PulsarTECH 10 ай бұрын
32GB would be sufficient for the most cases but if you're doing video editing, 3D work then the more the better. I would rather wait and get the 64GB because then you won't have to throw away the 32GB if you want to upgrade to 64GB. But of course it all depends on your goals.

@@bramin420 I haven't noticed any problems with memory temperature, in fact I never even look at it. The processor can get pretty hot up to 100C, so I had to get an additional cooling pad for my laptop, now it works cooler. Also I try to avoid the performance mode especially when it's hot outside because than it can really get hot and throttle. I've got a short on my channel for cpu temperature monitoring.
