The P15 Gen 1s are great laptops. I have deployed three of them with Quadro RTX4000. But watch out for battery drain with the docks. You should review the Docking station for the P15 Gen1 - P15 with Quadro-3000; 4000 or 5000 and the Lenovo TB Workstation dock Gen2 . Battery drain fun, even with the 230W power brick that comes with the dock, since it ends up only supplying 170W to the laptop. It splits out 65W to the dock and 170W to the laptop. Huge oversight by Lenovo. And your battery slowly drains away under use. Super frustrating. The Gen 1 docks came with a 2nd charger to power the dock. In your config with the T1000 or T2000 you would be fine, since it only needs 170W to power and top off battery.

Great to hear your feedback on the P15 Gen 1 psycl0ptic, especially the dock side. Even with the 170W plugged into the dock it still won't charge the laptop via the dock as I was thinking only 100W will go though but at least provide slow charge but nope, zero charge so you need the 230W for the P15. Spoke to Lenovo and yes pretty much all the docks you will need to plug the supplied 170W or 230W to the laptop as well as the USB-C/thunderbolt docking station too. I am hoping Lenovo update the docks this year to fix this issue.

@@BsianTech the TB3 Workstation Dock Gen2? But there is a solution. it comes with a 230W charger with a splitter. So what i do it buy a 65W charger and plug that into power port 1 and then plug the 230W into power port to - and problem solved. Not sure why lenovo doesn't just ship it in two configs - one for lower end spec P15s and one one for higher end P15, and P17 and T15G. All of those have variants that draw more than 170W. The Same TB dock, gen one, came with the two power adapter config I mentioned. But to be clear this is on the Workstation dock, not the standard TB docks. Those only supply power over TB. The workstation dock is dual - TB cable and power cable magnetically attached. Gen 2 Workstation dock with splitter: www.lenovo.com/us/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/TBT-WS-Dock-Gen-2/p/40ANY230US Gen1 with dual power supplies: support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd500252-thinkpad-thunderbolt-3-workstation-dock-230w170w-overview-and-sevice-parts Notice gen1 had two variants. Gen 2 comes in just the one. And they recommend the dock and don't tell you it won't supply enough power. I wasn't sure, but just ordered a 65W charger off amazon, removed the splitter and turned Gen2 into Gen 1 dock and no more battery drain. Again huge lenovo oversight. Was on phone with my Lenovo Rep and support and no one knew what the problem was. I just solved it myself.

Good to know that, I have a new ThinkPad T15g, pretty similar to the P15, and I was wondering what Lenovo dock I can use with it, but it looks like the those docks would require having several power bricks over the table, right? I'm looking for something with the minimal set of cables as my desk is small and I don't want to put cables everywhere.
@psycl0ptic
@psycl0ptic 3 жыл бұрын
@@jmoralesv03 Depends on your GPU. How big is your laptop power brick? With the higher end GPU configs, the laptop needs more power, so the TB Workstation 2 dock splits that power 65W for the dock and 170 that passes to the laptop. What works for me is to remove the splitter and plug in a 65W power adapter to the dock in the dock input port and then keep the 230W power adapter in the pass through power port. Then you just have the two cables coming from the dock (TB3 and Power adapter) which are magnetically attached. This cable here: www.lenovo.com/us/en/accessories-and-monitors/cables-and-adapters/cables/CABLE-BO-TBT-Dock-Active-Cable-1-5m/p/4X90U90621?cid=us:sem|se|google|ca+smart+shopping+accessories+non-intel|gs_accessories||4X90U90621|12111973117|115095911503|pla-1139772220953|shopping|brand&gclid=Cj0KCQiAyJOBBhDCARIsAJG2h5dmuhs5jSefmnIVK8llAMv7L_ZPLHBMjpuD-jBqtpmppsKPPcJ7OoAaAsLoEALw_wcB

I am a professional film maker / film editor / Camera Operator / DIT. After two months the touch screen module internal tape separated from the computer interface. Since my 4K screen was on back order I was stuck with a touch screen that was not functioning. I reloaded the computer three times to make sure this was not a hardware issue that Lenovo tech support was unable to determine without physically testing my machine. After a month of waiting I started trouble shooting the problem and was 99% sure that the touch pad module was not seated correctly during the original build in China. Lenovo tech came yesterday and proved I was right and we fixed the problem in a few minutes. I had him use high end thermal tape that is used for German electronics in BMW's to hold the touch screen interface ribbon in place. (Tesa's Most Advanced High Heat Harness Tape 51036 Mercedes, BMW, Audi, VW ) . Yeah I rebuilt a couple Mercedes over the last few years. Anyways I wish the tape Lenovo used inside this machine dealt better with the thermal heat of the 4K screens / system heat. I still love this machine! Hope this helps someone in need of this information. Here's to the future! Awesome Video BsianDad I learned a few new things!

Excellent review of the P15, probably the most in-depth you can find on YT. That arm holding the laptop is glorious ! As you mention, a novelty of this model is that the GPU is not soldered anymore. It is believed Lenovo made this change to offer more GPU options without making zillions custom motherboards, one for each CPU,GPU combo as it did previously. Theorically it should be feasible to replace the GPU but finding the custom board is probably next to impossible. The chassis is extremely sturdy with almost no flex due to the metallic rolling cage inside. I also wish the Gen2 will offer 16:10 panels
@BsianTech
@BsianTech 3 жыл бұрын
Wow thanks for the feedback Michael it was really heart felt. I think you might have hit the nail there having a daughter board to house the GPU allows to reuse the mainboard design in a number of their other laptops and just change the CPU and GPU combo. I'm personally don't think it's a bad thing, could try put a RTX 3080 later on when it is available lol. Making this workstation closer to a desktop computer able to upgrade in the future! As for the chassis I was very pleasantly surprise by the extra reinforcement on the frame, they have up the game on this one in this department. As for the arm holding the laptop might seems to be popular comment =). I'm not trying to sell it or being sponsored by this company. I do have a partnership with them to assist me with the upcoming office furniture video series I am going to do. They currently only ship inside Australia but they are exploring International shipping for the future but here is the link to their arms www.zenspacedesks.com.au/product-category/monitor-arms/ . The arm in the video isn't listed yet as it's a brand new arm they about to release out specifically for to hold smaller weight loads like the laptop.

Outstanding video. You put a lot of thought into this and I appreciate it. The ability to quickly jump to any review section is priceless. I purchased this machine based on your review and I am totally happy with it. I was wondering if you have the ability to review one of these in the touchscreen model? I have seen conflicting specs on the Lenovo website and others that the touchscreen display is 500 nits, and others show it being 400 nits. I would love to hear your review on this touchscreen model, in both functionality, glare, and what the "Actual" nits would read with the X-Rite scanner. I am a technician and do a lot of work outdoors, I could really use the touchscreen option however with this display being glossy and not matte, I'm quite hesitant on stepping up to the touch model. Thanks again for your efforts!

@@BsianTech primarily Solidworks 2019 and sometimes 2016, though sometimes Autocad gets thrown in for specific formats. A funny thing about Solidworks is that it has SEVERE internal limits. You can have 128 gigs of ram, but if more than 12 gigs are used in total, reguardless of what programs are using what allocations, Solidworks becomes entirely inoperable. It also continually snatches up GDI objects as it runs which is interesting to watch. After it surpasses Windows limits, it dies, though that can be 'fixed' by adjusting the max GDI object limit set in the BIOS. Also, it can't clean ot it's own registries. Every part/assembly/drawing opened and closed leaves registry entries that can only be cleaned out by restarting the computer. Long story short, the CPU, GPU, and ram speed are important, but not ram quantity. Physical memory is nice, but due to the number of full restarts needed in a day (usually 2-10), reboot speed is also a significant factor. Current iterations of Solidworks tend to only use a single or a small number of cores, so clock speed is also more valuable than total core counts (Solidworks, I think in 2020, tried to explain that this is a good thing, and advertised that the current version only used a single core reguardless of how many you had.). As ironic as it may seem, I think a curious programmer may get more enjoyment from watching the program struggle in its own bad memory management than a designer. I'm not saying the program is 'bad', you can make a chain of dozens of parts mechanically mated together and drag it in real time, all physics calculations happening in moments, but one you let go and try to move it again, prepare for minutes or hours of lag as the program struggles to perform the last operation in any way. That is, if it doesn't crash first.
@allanroberts7129
@allanroberts7129 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, on that note, I believe the optional setup for running Autocad would be: 4 matching ram sticks with tight timing, at least 16 gigs, but more than that won't help Solidworks Two fast nvme m.2 drives in raid 0, preferably with a total of 250 gigs or more At least one thunderbolt usb port And fast processors, with the ability to upgrade CPU and GPU in the future Those are the current specs that I think most well informed Solidworks users will be interested in. That being said, not all CAD programs are the same. This is all purely based on Solidworks.
@allanroberts7129
@allanroberts7129 3 жыл бұрын
Clarification So, all of the work computers we have and both home computers originally used for info run on 16gb of ram. A computer with more ram did allow Solidworks to use more. I must, therefore, clarify that more ram would be an improvement in addition to ram speed.
@BsianTech
@BsianTech 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks @Allan Roberts for the well detailed explanations this has help me understand Solidworks more and what to try align more tests for future reviews. I did have a feeling that Solidworks was more single core driven along with number of other apps I have come across and hence I try add in that processor behavior section to give a better idea along with the thermals if possible. Also reading the ideal setup for SW, I was wondering the thunderbolt port for? Just transferring project data between computers or is it used for other tasks?

hey @Bsiandad thanks so much for the info on this! I actually just purchased the P15 from Lenovo, and really appreciate your in-depth look at everything! I really have struggled to find a good laptop that fits my needs, which are primarily use for music production and as a current dental student. I can't find much online that I truly understand/is relevant regarding Thinkpads and music production, but I do know what I'm looking for is a quiet laptop with low fan noise that has a lot of RAM, strong processor, and good storage (it seems like graphics aren't too important). It seems like the Thinkpad P15 should check all these boxes! I've had a Dell XPS15 9500 the past 2 months or so that I plan to return- I'm honestly really fed up with Dell and the fans are so loud and I've been having serious latency issues. If you have any suggestions for how I can keep fan noise down on the P15 once I receive it that'd be hugely helpful, considering music production and recording are the most intense tasks I plan to use it for! (If not no worries at all)! Also, I am just a little concerned based on the comments below about which dock I will need for the P15 to charge and connect all my USBs from my different instruments (digital piano, electronic drums, MIDI keyboard, etc). I actually currently have the Dell WD19TB which has worked well with all these devices via a single Thunderbolt cable, and am hoping I wouldn't have to purchase another dock? The P15 I ordered comes with a 230 W adapter, so maybe that will work with the WD19TB to provide enough power? Hopefully! Maybe @psycl0ptic will know- he seems like he has the power situation figured out well for this laptop! Thanks a ton, excited to see more of your reviews!

Thanks very much @Tok Ads - All talks On Social Digital Marketing, I am guessing the different scores in benchmark test for Passmark and Cinebench that show dual results. The reason is that I tested these under the two different versions of Passmark and Cinebench. Since this video I have now removed the older version. The newer versions of Passmark and Cinebench ran the test differently and also different support was why I had this included in the review videos for people who had scores on the older versions to compare it with.

At the bottom side of laptop there is a very little hole. You will need a paper clip to poke it in and hold for 10 seconds to reset the power. I created a video to demonstrate how to do this with X1 Carbon but this works for the thinkpad range, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hL16l5holsC7iKc.html . Hi Dr.Rwiena, I haven't played with the HP Zbook Fury 15 in person yet but have a good general idea of it though. So I will attempt your question about those three workstations, Port selection, HP and Dell are good, HP being the winner. Keyboard goes to Lenovo, trackpad goes to HP. Display will be HP too, performance for me would be the Dell. Speakers will be decent tie between HP and Lenovo. In truth it all boils down to the after support for me, which you may get better in each country. All three workstations are built well and all are business class workstation designed to take on the work environment and travelling but if you had to make me pick one which I had to use just the laptop itself without dock and external monitor I would go for the HP, just got the combo of the display, keyboard, trackpad and speaker seems very well balanced to each other.

What are your thoughts on the Lenovo T15g?
@BsianTech
@BsianTech 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonny M, I would like to get my hands on the T15g to review as well. It's an interesting one, looks very similar to the P15 with I think I suspect only the discrete graphics being the major difference. T15g having the Geforce RTX 2070/2080 Super Max-Q instead of the Quadro T or RTX. Becomes a debate of Geforce vs Quadro again which I have covered a number of times in my live streams. Stability (Quadro) vs Speed (Geforce) is best way to say this, I've used this analogy normally for this. Quadro are like big Semi-Trailer Trucks and Geforce is like a supercar, both will carry load and get from A to B but of course trucks have more capacity to take on more load and are designed to run for reliably 24/7 where as of course the supercar is faster but not designed to take high load and extended operation. So really its up to your budget and if you be working professionally and applications need for stability. I hope that helps.

@@BsianTech Hmmm... Then I am not sure why Lenovo told like that... They even told me they are gonna remove from the website listing and also working with application team to remove it... But the US version is RTX2080 Super with Max-Q (8GB) and Singapore version(T15g) is just RTX2080 Max-Q (8GB)... But looking forward for newer mobile workstation equipped with RTX3000 series (Not Quadro)... However, in terms of gaming, it used to run fine at 60 fps with low settings. but recently after like 10 minutes of gaming the fps suddenly drops drastically, and I have found that the cause of this is that the CPU throttles to very low speeds (like from 4 GHz to 0.8GHz) even though the temperature is fine. Do you know what could be causing this problem?

@@MuhammadAhsanKaleem I doubt it will be due to dust in the vent / fan, it shouldn't heat up when plugged in, you could check it by propping it up using a book / stand, and P15 I believe have better thermal design than P53. Also, the power mode setting (the one that allows you to slide accross when you click the windows battery icon, not the lenovo vantage one) is the one I'm talking about, if you set that to "best performance" it should unleash the full power (unless you have an underrated charger, which I doubt). Also I think P53 used to have this CPU throttling issue, the link doesn’t work but the topic is P53 Performance Issues - Thermal/Power Throttling?. Hope it helps.

How do you rate the P15 against the Dell 7550. I bought a 7550 with an i9-10885h,32gb ram, 1tb, T2000, HD 4K screen. (Didn't even come with finger print scanner everything is extra) It lasted 4 days before endless problems. (crashed 4 times with basic office and email, temps ran to 80 degrees just on normal usage) Then took Dell 5 weeks to do a refund to the company I bought it from. Terrible customer service.( even though I had the most expensive customer care service paid for on purchase) I am now looking at a Lenovo P15 with Xeon 10885, 32gb ram 1tb h/d, RTX3000, 4k non touch screen. How do you rate thermals, build quality and 4k screen against Dell. Must admit I have had Lenovo T series for over 10 years and they last the longest and never give hassles. Dell 7550 ran super hot and super noisy and that was only office and internet (was faulty) also cost 6000 USD
@BsianTech
@BsianTech 3 жыл бұрын
IMO David, the thermals on the 7550 was better than the P15, sorry to hear you had a bad experience with Dell's aftersales support. The 7550 may feel hot but it would run it's fan much higher at higher speeds than the P15. So the P15 was quieter but of course you pay the price of performance for that quieter operation. There has been cases where the thermal paste hasn't been applied nicely in the 7550 and so runs hotter than usual which I suspect in your case. As for the P15 thermals are okay, could be improved if we could control fan speed better. Build quality wise much the sameness of the Dell, all built to be serviced lol and as for the display I think Dell have better 4k IMO but with a huge but if Lenovo brought back that built in color meter which they had in the P52 I would easily say Lenovo.
