I have decided to give my sister a Lenovo Thinkpad T410 for Christmas. Currently she is using a Dell Inspiron 15 3521 laptop for school which needs to be retired. It is slow, cheap, and probably will not last her through the next few years of High School. The T410, which I bought off eBay for $65, will make a great replacement laptop for her and should last for many years to come!
Before I can give the Thinkpad to my sister it needs a little work. I bought a 500GB ADATA SP550 SSD, new 9-cell Battery, used DVD drive, a drive caddy, and I pulled 8GB of RAM out of another Dell inspiron laptop to go into the T410. In this video I will upgrade the T410 so that it is ready to go when my sister receives it, I will also Install Windows 7 Pro, run some benchmarks, and even play Minecraft.
System Specs: Intel I7 620M, Nvidia Quadro NVS 3100M 256MB, 8GB DDR3 RAM, 500 GB SSD

HAHA, I got one too for the same price a while back. It works great very happy with it and my T410-420 dock also works on the T430. These docks work on several different models which is kind of nice, however it don't work on the T400.

wow great deal. I got T400 for free from my office. But its in bad condition (scratched up) and no battery. I upgraded the RAM, bought a new battery, and 120GB SSD. Spent total 120bucks on it. It runs amazing

ThinkPads all the way! I have a T410 myself, very similar specs to this one. Except my SSD is "only" 240 gigs, but I compensate with a 320GB HDD in the optical drive's place. Also, I run Debian. It's an amazing machine. Also, watching this on a X200 I just got today. Upgraded to 4 gigs of RAM (coming from the T410) and a 500GB HDD (I know, I know...), installed Trisquel and it works like a charm. I dedicate this to be my new school machine. I will also attempt to install libreboot on it.

I recently bought a T430s which has the last pre ULV CPU. The i7 is still awesome and the 430s is officially supported by Lenovo for Windows 10. Upgraded it with 16 Gigs of RAM and a Samsung 850 SSD this thing goes for 300€. Spent another 100€ for a new original 6 cell battery and the 3 cell battery for the ultrabay and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

@wildbill23c 7 жыл бұрын
What kind of battery life do you see having both batteries installed? I've been tossing around the idea of getting the 3 cell ultra bay battery as well. Right now I think I get about 4 hours with the regular 6 cell battery in it.

11 months late, but Lenovo put the sticker with the FCC logo over the last screw. Which is a shame, I definitely don't want to break through the label on my T410. I guess an i7 is worth less than the integrity of a sticker to me.

Most of the older Lenovo Thinkpads, Dell Latitudes and HP Elitebooks are extremely upgradeable and can be made into snappy daily drivers for school or office use. I myself have a Dell Latitude E5420 which was upgraded to 8 gigs of RAM and a Kingston 480 GB SSD (i5-2520M CPU was left like that) which made a superfast multitasking machine. I installed Windows Vista Business SP2 (yes, it's time we revisit Vista and change most of our negative notions about it) and after installing Extended Kernel which is currently in the works, it makes a snappy modernised laptop. Also, your videos are awesome!! Please make one on the Latitude E5420 if possible (And I will stay with Vista for as long as I can; I won't upgrade to Win10 or install Linux as of now)

The reason that I absolutely love ThinkPads are that they all seem to have a Hardware Maintenance Manual available from IBM/Lenovo, and these manuals cover how to replace EVERY part of the ThinkPad. They do this for business IT departments, I'm sure, but it's a DAMN valuable resource. BTW, here's the link for the Hardware Maintenance Manual for the T410: download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/63y0535_01.pdf

Yep, they have a great resource available for their machines. Not sure how far back they go, I know I can lookup the manuals for the T60, I'm sure they probably go back farther. Love the complete tear down they have in the manuals, makes servicing and repairs easy. Part numbers are listed making finding parts easy too.

I'm not sure if you've come across these before, but Lenovo publishes some excellent service manuals - search "Thinkpad T410 Hardware Maintenance Manual" and have a look at the first result!

I agree Lenovo build quality isn't what it used to be compared to the IBM built/designed models (I think T43 was last fully IBM model before Lenovo started touching things) but as for dissasembly details, all the service manuals are available online from lenovo.com but their web site is slow and difficult to navigate, so good luck there! I have an X201 which has been treated to an Intel 160GB X25-M SSD and Windows 10. Just needs new battery and is good for a few years yet.
@wildbill23c

Ebay for the new battery. Your best bet to find the manuals is to just google your model and include hardware maintenance manual. For example hardware maintenance manual for T410 will get you the direct link to the manual download in PDF.

You can get an ultra bay adapter for a hard drive to install in place of your CD/DVD drive as well...the only thing I have found is the adapter doesn't work with the 7200RPM drives, it works fine with 5400RPM drives and SSD's just not the faster drives.

+treypop There was never an office suite included with Windows. Some manufactures would bundle MS Office, MS Works, WordPerfect, Lotus Smart Suite, etc. with their computer though. While it wasn't actually free, it was substantially cheaper than buying it yourself. As the price of computers dropped dramatically most stopped bundling the full version and only included a trial version that you had to pay for to keep using and/or left it as an added cost option.

@hateWinVista
@hateWinVista 7 жыл бұрын
ThinkPad BIOS supervisor password is stored into EEPROM for security reasons(not T series exclusive,I had one on my second handed X220,too) and cannot be discarded with ordinary "removing CMOS battery" method. However,there still exists other ways to clear the supervisor password other than brute force(e.g. dumping the data from the EEPROM and finding the correct password with hex editor).

I have one of those inspiron 3521's and don't see how it is so bad for the average user. Granted, mine was free and it's hard to complain about it at that price point. I have put Windows 7 on it and it has 6GB of ram. I'll grant that the Lenovo was a great find and you have made it even better, but wouldn't you just be able to put the SSD and the extra ram into the Inspiron and made it run as well without the extra cost of the computer, battery, and the dvd drive? By the way, When I say "run as well"' I know that an I7 will run faster and the graphics would be better, but if this is just for school, I don't see how those things will make that much of a difference in the user experience. The one thing I would like in comparing the two when it comes to usability, is that the Lenovo would be nicer for me when it comes to hauling it around. I hate taking the inspiron anywhere. Just too dang big! But again, it's hard to beat free...

When you are taking the screws out use a fine black marker pen to mark the length of screws and what they hold down. makes it easy to get the right screws in the right holes. one thing o do to make Lenovo T410s even faster is putting Linux mint 20.1 on them as the operating system is smaller and because it does not have bloatware of windows it is just as fast and many of the new computer you can get today plus its free. people are afraid of linux mint but its easy to learn and you can find tutorials for linux mint just by looking on the web. and everyone should learn linux as more and more companies are using it because of its higher security.

Is this the one with the locked bios? Regardless, you can reset the password by removing the cmos battery for a few seconds then put it back in.

I use a T60 as my daily driver right now and I love it. You should be able to pick one up for around $10 off eBay: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ouCnqJiZva2odoE.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aNpniLWWxN_Fg3k.html

Take a look at the videos I linked you to. They should help you decided whether the T60 is right for you or not.

Where do you find them for $10? Haven't seen them for that price for a long time, now that everyone is buying them up and bringing them back to life with windows 10 or Linux the prices have skyrocketed on them.

you could remove the cmos battery to get rid of the supervisor PW. Just leave the battery out for 10 minutes and I read somewhere you needed to turn the computer on with the cmos battery removed so you get the message that settings have restored to defaults then put the battery back in. Then the password should be gone

Won't work on these systems, the passwords are stored in the BIOS EEPROM so removing power to the BIOS doesn't clear anything in these systems. You'd have to replace the BIOS, or there are other means of getting around it but with or without permanently bricking the system.

im planning on getting the nvidia quadro motherboard for my t410 playing minecraft on my i7 640m's integrated graphics runs horrible, it looked really smooth when you were playing it on those high settings, i just hope their is the needed parts on ebay for it as il need the heat sink with the gpu part on it, the motherboard aswell which can cost up to £40. Nice video btw

Awesome! Keep in mind though, for the price you may just be better off buying another T410 with the Quadro graphics already installed.

although you may not want to do this (due to overall portability) but you could do an EGPU through expresscard (which is what ill do relatively soon). I think I'm doing an egpu with a 750 or 750ti.

xBane_ I have heard about this before, I don't take my laptop any ware so portability is not an issue for me, I was also thinking of a gtx 750ti evga's superclock edition with 2gb of vram is is perfect with me. People said if you t410 has no option about switching to gpu or igpu mode via bios then you should use the express card, I'm just really worried if I have to use a external monitor or connected a display port to the 750ti so it would connect to the laptop screen as I would have to buy a wireless keyboard and mouse so I don't have to have a laptop with its lid down in front of me. Just asking but are you also using a t410 as well?
