The 2022 Gen 7 edition of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga 14” convertible slim and light business laptop sports an aluminum chassis in Storm Gray rather than the traditional matte black. It’s refreshed with Intel 12th gen Alder Lake CPUs with optional vPro, Windows 11, Thunderbolt 4 and a larger trackpad. The 4K OLED display option is back this year, and the Ultrabook is also available with full HD IPS display, all at 16:10 aspect ratio. As ever, a garaged rechargeable pen is included and the convertible’s screen supports touch. 4G and sub6 5G are optional.

I must say, as a rather proud owner of a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 6 (which your review helped me decide to purchase :) ), this seems like an incremental, but overall good update. I opted for the 4K, top-end Intel i7-1186G7 CPU spec version of the Gen 6, so my battery life is not... the best. But, I knew that going into it, and overall it's a worthwhile trade off for me. I would be curious how the 4K OLED panel of the Gen 7 compares to the 4K LCD panel of the Gen 6 with regards to quality and battery life. Thanks for the awesome reviews! :)

Thanks for the review. I got the Gen 6 loaded about a month ago, used via eBay. One of my favorite notebooks. It is super light, love the built in pen and all the ports, especially the "regular" USB. Coming from the Dell XPS that I spent over $3k, I like the yoga better. The Dell track pad went out on me after a year and the screws came out on their own. Like Apple's computers the screen on the Dell didn't unfold enough which is why I am such a big fan of the convertible or at least the 180 degree range. I never thought I would buy a thinkpad after Lenovo bought IBM's PC business however I am impressed. I am hoping for a Snapdragon Gen 7 for better battery life and a cooler running computer. It would be cool to have a dedicated graphics card with something like a Snapdragon but don't know how the performance would compare to Intel based? Is the fingerprint reader any better on Gen 7 than the Gen 6? Keep up the great work!

I hope they ironed out all the OLED bugs from the GEN2. My Gen2 OLED screen was replaced 3 times under warranty. Each time was weeks waiting for new screens to come into stock. They offered a standard LED screen since the OLED's were not available and failing. I bought the GEN2 specifically for the OLED though. Eventually Lenovo replaced the whole computer under warranty but sadly this one is having the same exact problem. Just ordered the GEN 7 OLED as I am expecting a few months for my GEN 2 to be fixed again and seriously doubt the screen is available anymore. At least still under warranty. I notice Lenovo quickly dropped the OLED option from Gen3 to Gen6. I hope that was to figure out what was failing in the GEN2 OLED's. I did get the 5 year, on site warranty just in case though.

I don't recommend anyone buying this cool device with a screen with a "privacy guard" feature if you are going to use pen a lot, e.g. for taking notes, since it becomes dim at certain angle even when that feature is off, which in particular means that it is very hard to find a comfortable position to be able to see the screen while drawing/taking notes.

Lisa - what is the reason for soldered RAM nowadays? Space? Requirement of new purchase for upgrades? What are your thoughts on this?
@andyH_England
@andyH_England 2 жыл бұрын
Several reasons; Ultrabooks do not really need upgradeable RAM as they are mainly bought by people that know what they need, eg Enterprise and business. Also, 16GB is the most people need for these machines as they are not meant for hardcore workflows. Another reason is latency, soldered to the motherboard rather than using another connector. Then these Ultrabooks are thin and light and saving space where you can (and weight) all helps these packages. Having removable RAM in gaming machines, prosumer laptops and desktops still exists for many as they may indeed need upgrades and weight and size not an issue. Obviously as we move to ARM then even then we will have less options for upgradeable RAM, due to the nature of the architecture.

5:20 isn’t OLED display more power efficient? Seems to be the case on smartphones
@bradhaines3142
@bradhaines3142 2 жыл бұрын
OLED isnt more efficient on any device. if at lower brightness, it does use a little less than LCD, but at higher brightness it uses a lot more than LCD, balancing out to OLED using more power. its chose for picture quality and size of the packaging (oled is way smaller than LCD because of all of the layers to LCD)
@andyH_England
@andyH_England 2 жыл бұрын
OLED is probably not going to be a big seller in this lineup as this is mainly an Enterprise ultrabook and businesses are unlikely to stump up the extra for an OLED especially with the many cons. I suspect Lenovo did not sell many and ditched OLED for a hike but this year they will probably have a small line producing them for the few takers. On white background OLED is less efficient than LCD. Also, as you increase brightness on an OLED it is not linear like LCD, so the higher brightness = increased higher wattage compared to LCD. Also, OLED tend to have higher resolution due to the pixel arrangement where the matrix has gaps in, meaning a 1080p OLED looks less sharp than an LCD. So a 2.5-2.8K or even preferably a 4K will mean a much higher draw on power. So generally OLED is not the best choice on business laptops used on the go. For a lucky student that can afford it and will never be far from a socket then the OLED is an option especially a it will be better for media when not studying.
@mobiletechreview
@mobiletechreview 2 жыл бұрын
OLED is very efficient when displaying blacks and dark colors. It is however much less power efficient when displaying whites and light colors-- like the average web page or office document. On PCs, we tend to look at white (ish) screens a lot, so power consumption is higher with OLED. Using a dark theme helps with this. Also the OLED is 4k, so the big resolution bump also uses more power.

How old are you? Laptops don't come with DVD players anymore and they haven't for ages. You must still be racking an old Toshiba running windows 7.

What exactly does my age have to do with it? But just for you I'll tell you that I have Windows 10. I'm up to date on electronics. I'm allowed to say what I like. It should be an option. It's just another way for v computer companies to charge the same but give you less.

A little feedback for you : your explanation sometime do not conform with the shot you put on your video. Like you were highlighting the aesthetics of the laptop when explaining the processor. Why? And often, it gets really boring when two things just do not run in parallel. Overall, it’s a good video but need more polishing. Regardless, I watch your video primarily for that T-shirt. Lol.

I just bought an 8th gen, and the trackpad is horrible. When my fingers get a bit sweaty, the friction is high, and the pointer is sometimes not moving, and I need to press my finger really hard against it to force it to react. It's really disappointing for a supposedly premium laptop. Lenovo just has too many product lines to keep each one of them reliable.

Love your reviews - always considered Lenovo, but.... they will not make a screen brighter than 300 nits for under 2,000 in the business class - and good luck finding a 1080 / 5MP camera on anything but the 12th gen models. Buying massively overpriced DDR5 today for 12th gen, before chipsets and thermal controls have caught up is just money down the drain.

Unfortunately, I had a terrible experience with my Lenovo Gen 6 X1 Yoga. My screen failed after only 1.5 years of use, along with the motherboard. I spent 2k on a laptop and trusted Lenovo to give a quality product, but I was wrong. This was also the 2nd laptop I got from them after another issue from the first one they sent. Quality control has gone down. Happily, I now own a M1 Macbook Air.

@@AliB19 That's unlucky, I guess there's always a percentage of duds that's can occur, although I do believe the ThinkPads quality control is reduced in recent years.
