Since there are no clear tutorials or guides on how to carry out a keyboard replacement on this particular model, I decided to document my own method in a video to help others. I hope it saves you a lot of time and money!
I am informed that the x250 and x260 models are practically identical and that this tutorial also works for these. This is why I have included it in the video title, but please take care and use common sense if you come across any differences :)
Please take extreme care when copying anything you see in this video. TechSolvers cannot be held responsible for any damage caused to your hardware as a result of following this tutorial.

Thanks for the great tutorial. Let me share my advice on this after following your step by step guide. 1, At 14:20 when you pull out the ribbon cable, first you need to release it by gently pulling slightly out the small 2 black ear on the sides of the socket. Then you can easily pull out the cable as nothing holds it in the socket. 2, The thin ribbon cable doesn't have to go underneath the wide one from 20:16 The latest replacement keyboard comes with the wide ribbon cable glued to the board so instead of tearing it up, you can just lay the thin ribbon cable on the top of it.

Due to spilling coffee on my laptop (oops) I was forced to look for a way to replace the keyboard. I've never replaced a laptop keyboard before so I thought given the trickiness of this laptop I would find it hard. This video, however really made it easy for me. All sorted - thank you very much.

Just wanted to complement you on your demo skills. Very clear, without being overly verbose. Lots of good tips and warnings against possible snafus. You made it look very do-able ...even though it nuts! I watched just for the beginning - as I only wanted to upgrade the disk, but I watched it all anyway!! BTW, I've changed the keyboard of my old X230 and it was a complete picnic by comparison.

Great vid - I'm at 14:30 - the trackpad ribbon cable is held in by a black clip which slides away from the plug along the plane of the ribbon cable - it needs eased out one side at a time. Most ribbon cables which don't plug in have either a clip which slides out (as is the case here), a clip which hinges (like the keyboard cable) - both are zero insertion force - or require pressure to insert & remove. Cables in the latter category almost always have a rigid plastic flap parallel to the cable itself and pointing away from the connector. This can be held firmly with needle-nosed pliers to insert & remove the cable from its connector.

MANY THANKS - TOO COMPLICATED FOR THIS OLD GUY. I refurbish old laptops and donate them to charity. I found a simple solution to this problem. I simply bought a separate USB keyboard [ for about 6GBP ] and donated that as well. Worked beautifully ! The cost of replacing the X240 keyboard was much more than this and the replacement procedeure would have been a nightmare for me.

Thanks! Did not realize how pain in the rear just to change the keyboard until saw this video. Ordered the 'backlit' keyboard to replace current one on my X250. Everything was okay until I put everything back together to boot up the PC. Dead... Nothing... I had to Unplug the AC power, external battery, reopen the device, remove RAM, and disconnect the internal battery for hard reset. Held down my power for 20 seconds. Connected the AC power and the laptop powered back up! Put the RAM back in to the laptop, connect the battery, cover, and external battery back. Reboot! Good as new! No driver update required for me. Once again Thanks!

Glad this video is still around. I am re-furbing an old X260 with Linux (works great). I can confirm not only that the replacement procedure is almost identical for the X260, but a bit easier as you don't have the troublesome ribbon cable for the touch-pad. Many thanks

Major PITA but slow, steady and following your instructions I've managed two of them now. Thanks for the help. Great video. FYI, The trackpad connector to the left of the machine has small black tabs to the right of the connector. If you catch the tab with your screwdriver and slide it to the right, it opens that connector and the ribbon cable can be removed and replaced easily.

Thanks for putting this up for us. Was able to change the keyboard on an X260. It took a bit more wiggling and slow cajoling to get the motherboard to release from the plastic shield for some reason. But good news is that the connector for the touchpad is not covered by another tape and only has a small area of adhesive to pull off and re-attach.

Many thanks for this - got the backlight keyboard changed no bother for a anti microbial keyboard on a refurbed x240. Word to the wise - if your laptop has a fingerprint scanner DONT lift the laptop away from the screen as per the instructions here as the plastic is very weak and will snap around the scanner (like mine did). Instead put something to protect the screen as the start. Not a big deal for me as it’s an old cheap machine mainly on the dock but still worth noting as a new top case isn’t particularly cheap.

Great Review, Just a side note - may prove useful to others. Connector on far left, for the FingerPrint, is to be open/inserted by pulling the locking mechanism - black band below the white top. Once pulled - you can easily insert/remove without force. Locking is by pushing black entry back, which locks cable in place.

Alternative for changing US to UK keyboard: get the very few different keys with the right connectors (on eBay individually or from a non working keyboard that will cost very little, ones that are identical in every way from same series). See online videos of safely popping keys off and putting the replacements on. Then set keyboard layout to UK in the software. I've done this with a Swedish to UK change, no big tear down then needed with all the risks of doing that. Great video for if you've got a faulty keyboard of course - thanks guys

Painstaking process to swap a simple keyboard on this model though(took a page from Apples book) can't wait until I have to do it over and over to make an extra $10 a machine...Looks like it will be much easier just swapping keys if they are just worn out and not broken/non-functioning.

What a fasincating video. And so nice and clear as to what you're doing (visually at least as the sound is a little low) I WAS thinking of removing the keyboard for a project, but I now think I'd leave it in place! (My idea is / was to place the screen OVER the keyboard area, and convert it into a psuedo all in one / tablet with usb / bluetooth keyboard ... but that also depends on how 'flexible' the LCD cable is re positioning. Might also be possible to attach the LCD to the base ... although that would possible hinder the fan air intake)

X201(T) seems like the last good X Thinkpad, everything after that is more and more bad. X220 ditched leds, X230 introduced the horrible clickpad-syle touchpad, X240 is hard to service and has only one (max 8GB) RAM slot, and so on. My nest laptop after X230 will probably be a Dell latitude, HP ellitebook or something like that.

Excellent guide, thank you very much! You helped me to replace the keyboard on my X250 to a backlit keyboard in my language. It is really not that hard (of course, much more work then on x230), just need to carefully do all the steps. The hardest part is indeed the ribbons, especially the long one that goes from the left side to the right side near the internal battery. I wonder what does cable does, and what can be connected to it? Maybe an NFC module? Would be nice to know, perhaps somebody managed to figure this out? And be careful when you remove the bottom base, it really feels like something that can brake easily. Funny how Lenovo did this. Anyway, the X250 is the best notebook out there considering the price and what you get, just make sure you get one with IPS display. Once again, many thanks for this great tutorial!

The "weird little connector" at 14:25 can be released by pushing the two black plastic bits outwards, which will release the ribbon cable and allow you to reseat it much more easily

Great guide. I would've been lost without it. Luckily I bought the keyboard first and only after realized how complicated it is to swap it. If I knew beforehand I would have stuck with the awkward Swedish layout. My model didn't have the 2 strips glued to the back of the keyboard so it was a little easier, but not by much :(

A very good guide, BUT always observe and adhere to ESD procedures by wearing anti-static wrist band and work on anti-static earthed mat.

Great video, making the keyboard replacement on my X260 easy peasy!

You call that "easy"? Seriously??? That's insanely complicated, and takes a considerable amount of time too. On top of everything else, it looks very easy to damage/ruin something to make re-assembly a nightmare (or worse still - impossible). It's definitely not something I would want to attempt to do with my X260. Are you in London (or close to London)? If so, I'd be willing to pay you to change my keyboard. The space-bar doesn't always register when pressed. If this is something you'd be willing to take on, please let me know your price.

Hi Andy, sorry to hear you have a completely different experience. Yes, it was a time consuming exercise, but still the video guide allowed me to do exactly the same on my X260. Unfortunately, I don't live in or close to London (located in the Netherlands), so I hope you will find somebody else to help you with this. Good luck!

I do want a backlit US keyboard for my x240. After watching this video, I started to like the ISO non-backlit keyboard :)
