Lens Focus Limiter Explained

In this video I explain the purpose and use of the focus limiter in response to a subscriber named Aaron who asked about it's function on his Nikon 70-200 F/2.8E VR. Focus limiters are mostly found on telephotos and macros and allow the photographer to limit a a lens to a smaller part of it's focus range.

So I came here wanting to know if I need to turn off my camera to before engaging the limiter switch, I believe the answer is no. Your explanation for the limiter switch was clear and practical that’s what I really enjoyed I could walk away and explain it to someone else! That’s a sign of a good teacher. Simple subject you say? Maybe, but presented in a way where you remember the main points. Thank you.

Glad I was able to help! You are correct, you do not have to turn the camera off first before engaging the focus limiter.

@@JeremySmithPhotography I rented an Olympus 300mm 4.0 pro lens. It has a function to put image stabilization on or off. Can’t think of a time I wouldn’t want image stabilization on. I figured I must be missing something here.

Very helpful. If i'm shooting lets say a chain for product photography, which would you recommend as the focus distance using the macro 90mm?

I would use the middle position (infinity to 0.5m) that way you don't have the lens trying to focus to the closest distance when needed. This will speed up AF performance overall.

I shoot with a Nikon D500 and D4. I shoot high school sports with a 200-500 5.6. For soccer, baseball and football should I set the focus limiter to full or inf? I am trying to lock on to my subject quicker and need all the help I can get. Thank you.

In your situation I would imagine that most of the time the action is farther away, I would give the limit setting a go. On the 200-500 that would keep the lens from focusing on sideline action and such as it limits the lens to focusing only down to 19.5 feet or so.
