My suggestion to you fine sir is that you actually learn about what it is you are trying to review. Your credibility for anything else you might review on KZfaq is now ZILCH. Congratulations! :-)

@@Funkteon Look for a Mark 3 Military or Nautical Prismatic Compass. Avoid buying the ones that are graduated in Mils... The better ones come in brass and actually gain value over time. There are many tutorial videos on here that are very helpful. On this model, swap the lanyard to a dog leash clip. This will help you use the thumb ring, correctly. Thread the lanyard through the hole in the pouch. Then you can hang the whole thing around your neck. Tuck it inside your shirt or jacket, to stop it flapping about. Buy yourself a book on Orienteering, it will be hugely helpful... As will, finding someone who is ex-artillery and asking for help. I really hope that this helps you in your choice of compass.

I have one of these compasses. You don't have to unscrew the peephole. There is a magnifying glass in this piece which you look through. This magnifies the ring settings. At least, that's how may compass works. We have the same compass so I am sure yours does this as well.

Try looking through the piece you screwed out, it’s a lens for seeing the degree. This compass is great, I’ve got the same one.
@cvcoco
@cvcoco 2 жыл бұрын
I have this and you dont unscrew that piece. Its a magnifier, you look through it and turn to adjust until you can read the degrees clearly and with the other eye you can line up your destination, i suppose. The level isnt for fun, this wont work unless it is level which is a challenge when its in your hand. The front sight is fine but the rear sight is so low it makes using sights useless. It also has another sighting window which you can view with the cover closed. The directions are extensive but you'll have to scan the pages and blow up 500% so that you can print and read it. When you do you will find out the instructions were written for a different compass. They simply copied some military compass papers and stuck it in the box. The directions also say the compass dial floats on a sapphire but who is going to believe that for $5? The outer dial ring is silly, maybe its supposed to fool you to be MILS but its just more degrees. MIL-radians requires some learning and would have 64 graduations. The downside is that its very heavy to carry around and not high quality. Though the compass points North i wouldnt rely on this if you have to be somewhere important. Its fine to have more compasses to compare readings and this is fun to play with to see if a person likes this type of compass and then upgrade to a quality version like Cammenga. But nothing matters if you dont learn how to use this or any compass and maps. This as a cheap learning tool is fine but even then id rather go with a cheap baseplate compass but thats another story. Happy trails!

@mlc9928

I’m going to be brutally honest with you. It doesn’t make a difference if you’re using mils, degrees, or a made up unit of measurement. As long as you use your measurements correctly, it’s accurate. Your argument basically is the same as a metric user saying that imperial is inaccurate. That’s just ignorant. You just want what you’re used to and that’s fine but it doesn’t mean this one is inaccurate. I have a metal compass that I bought from a gun show that was used in WW2 (U.S. stamped on cover) army issue, that is so much harder to use than this $10 compass. If they can use a super basic compass and win a war, I think we can use a much more superior compass that uses degrees to navigate a simple hiking trip. And furthermore, do you really think anyone has somewhere “important” (meaning war time destination) that wouldn’t have a military issued compass? Use your brain and don’t be a jerk. You aren’t intellectually superior like you think you are. You’ve watched too many movies. I assure you that an intelligent person can navigate with a cheap compass and map.

There is a lot you can do with this compass. Unfortunately the person who made this video is completely ignorant of its features and capabilities. My only complaint is the weight. At 7.95 oz (with pouch), it’s about 4 times heavier than a standard “UST ENGINEER LENSATIC COMPASS”. But it is also MUCH more precise if you know how to use it. The heavier weight even aids the accuracy. And accurate readings are everything!

Like many of these videos you don't know how to use it. This is a military compass. O.D. green stands for olive drab. You are hold it wrong. You put your thumb through the metal loop and rest the compass on your pointer finger. Don't open the sight glass all of the way. keep it at approx. a 45degree angle so you can view the face of the compass dial. You must line up the marks to find the direction to which you want to travel. the magnifier is also used to start a fire if you have sun? You probably confused many people.

Walking in a circle saved my life. Many years ago my girlfriend and I went to a friend's farm and we decided to go into the bush in back to take pictures we started walking through the bush and I figured I was walking in a straight line and would just have to turn around and come back after a while we got lost we kept walking and finally in the distance we saw a house we decided to walk towards the house not knowing where we were going to and lo and behold when we got to the house it was the house that we started off from we had walked in a complete circle in the bush if that was a myth we would still be in the bush somewhere as Corpses. Nice compass, never go into the woods without one lesson learned

Nice review of the features of this compass. I'm a bit of a compass junky, I like to buy and play around with different designs to see how different designers try to add useful features, and I'm intrigued by this design. What I haven't yet figured out is who makes this design and where. The same design appears to be sold under different names such as: TF Stevens, Gwhole, Sunfunk, Banne, Ueasy, and several other names. I've found about a dozen different names thus far. And the prices vary widely from $9 to about $50. All of them appear to be the same design, same color, same materials, same pouch, same instruction booklet, same table printed on the bottom, same features, etc. And there's a second version - looks the same, but they have an additional plate that folds up on the side that is an inclinometer. Like most other lensatic compasses for a lot of different map work a separate protractor would be needed. Anyway, once I decide if they are all the same or if one brand is a higher quality build that justifies the higher price I will order one of them. Would I be correct in guessing that the black piece you unscrewed and removed actually has a lens inside it to focus the numbers printed on the edge of the magnetic compass card? The numbers appeared to be the sighted bearing and with the back angle printed in the different color.

I cannot add much more than what has been said by many: this guy knows absolutely NOTHING about lensactic compasses (in general) nor this compass (in particular). That said, he did take the time to post the video, so we have to give him props there. As a seasoned outdoorsman, let me add something that might help somebody that just inadvertenly stumbles across this video with the (false) hopes that they may learn something from his review. In his format, you won't (lol!). This is a Chinese copy of the US military lensactic compass (Model 3H) that offers some worthwhile features and suffers from a lot of misunderstanding; and his video clearly doesn't help any on this. First, the body is zinc, not steel. The US military model is aluminum, but at this price point, I'd have expected nothing more than zinc or pewter (pot metal). The liquid damping is quite good, but the compass card does take a moment to settle; far longer than a commercial baseplate compass (Suunto, etc.) or US 3H (which is induction dampened). Yet no bubbles and the sighting tool is top notch. There is no declination adjustment, but nor is there any in the US 3H model (the Army teaches protractor use in Land Nav). BUT: and here's the kicker: FOR THE PRICE: you can't beat it. It IS heavy. It does take a moment to dampen. And you had better know how to use a compass because the instructions won't help and this video will help even less :). But great buy for 2024: under $20.00!!!!

Seems terribly cheap. I would gladly spend more on a cammenga lensatic.

PVP, a fantastic review. I learned more about compasses in this review than I did in 3 years in a knock off Boy Scout (I couldn't join the real Boy Scout for some reason.)

It would be best to learn how to use a product before you try to demonstrate it. To learn to use this compass simply ask any military person that has just gotten out of basic training.

Walking in a circle is an instinct, if you don't know where you're going you're more likely to wind up back home. It's nothing to do with leg length

Some knock-offs from China have bad center hubs. You should check the needle drift and return with a nail before using.
