In this video, I’ll explain why I carry three lenses with me.
People always ask, “what’s the best lens for landscape photography?” or, “Which lens should I buy?” It’s a difficult question to answer, but I hope to clear a few things up.
I’ll talk about Ultrawide, Mid-Range, and Telephoto lenses. What I’ll also talk about is what each type of lens is best at…
And, some tips you can apply right away. No matter what lens you have!
So is there a “best” lens?
Well, while a lot of people worry about technical specs, glass type, etc, I want to focus on how you are going to use the lens.
Then, you can decide which one will work best for you!
Enjoy!

I cannot tell you how useful and timely this is! I’ve been studying lenses as would like another one and have been looking at wide angle, even created an excel spreadsheet (am weird) and this has been extremely helpful! As you’ve given examples and explained so clearly. I’ve been getting confused researching and reading, this has given me clarity. I can’t thank you enough! Really well made too, engaging and full of tips. Thank you!!!

I use 16-35 GM, 24-105 G, 100-400 GM, and 28-200. I find myself gravitating to the 16-35 and 28-200 combination in a small shoulder bag as a lightweight hiking setup. When you are so close to objects with with the 16-35, you must use a wide aperture! I find the 16-35 image quality falls off drastically smaller than 1f/11. What aperture do you typically use (the raw images don’t appear to have this exif data).
@WilliamPatinoPhotography
@WilliamPatinoPhotography Жыл бұрын
I'll gravitate to f/11 then close down further if needed, or do a focus stack. Definitely f/22 is way softer but it's not something I'm overly concerned about and will go there if needed, even if it is to reduce light in order to get a slow shutter.

Thank You so much! I've been searching for information like this where I felt you taught me sooo much! And didn't talk over my head. Thanks for sharing Will. I just came back from a photography trip and missed my 24-70. There was no interesting foreground, yet the midground is nice. For me, 12-16mm is really hard to handle, it contains too many things. I also find you did not mention filters in your videos, CPL and ND. These pieces of glass are really heavy, just like the chicken chest.

I just orered a Nikon Z6III with the 24-200mm lens, it seemed like the perfect choice for landscape photography. What Sony camera are you rocking? Is it a high mp camera? Maybe i should have gone with a Z8, it's got the 45.5mp sensor..

Thank you. I shoot lots of different things but have wanted build a landscape kit and didn’t think primes was the right answer for the versatility. Is your 12-24mm / 16-35mm an f/2.8 or does a f/4 work? How about the 12-24/4 G, 24-105/4 G, and 100-400mm GM kit sound? Take care.
@WilliamPatinoPhotography
@WilliamPatinoPhotography 2 ай бұрын
That kit sounds perfect. If you can shoot from 12-400mm across 3 lenses, then that’s all you need :) the 2.8 versions are often a little sharper but f/4 versions are still more than fine.

For me, it's the newest lens in my kit that's the one I can't live without... Definitely not the best way to do photography, I always want to shoot with my 100-400mm even if it isn't the best for the scene.

@@clemlvn9598 yeah the sigma primes are beastly. I had that lens in the 1.8, many years ago. I definitely can’t justify carrying around primes these days and rely on the versatility of zooms but Sigma definitely delivers the goods on their primes that’s for sure!

Canon 10-18 mm for my wide Canon 28-80 mm for my mid (but it is old and a bit finicky so I need a new one) Canon 75-300 for my tell (older cheapie one, I want to get one with an image stabilizer) Also a 60 mm macro b/c I like to do macro work. All EF glass from my older DSLR. I recently upgraded to a Canon M6 Mark II (with loads of guidance from your helpful gear master class; thanks for that!) so bought the converter. Not seeing any issues with that yet. When I upgrade the mid- and tely I’ll look at M-series lenses I think. Great video. Years ago someone told me that if you wanted to be a serious photographer you should NEVER use zoom lenses ONLY prime, so thanks for blowing that rumour out of the water. To be fair, perhaps the technology has improved (this was back in the last century ha ha).
@WilliamPatinoPhotography
@WilliamPatinoPhotography 2 жыл бұрын
@@yolandawiersma8180 haha, perhaps so. The quality of zooms has definitely come a long way! Great arsenal of lenses there for the body you have. The stabiliser is definitely a great aid with the long lens, when you can eventually upgrade. Thanks for sharing! :)

Canon 7D with either Tamron 17-50 f2.8 or Tamron 16-300. I find the 17-50 is slightly sharper (old non VC version). Other than the sharpness I’d just use the 16-300 for everything.
