He was not an American song writer. He was a Canadian citizen and remained one his whole life, lived and loved in Montreal and continued residing there. His literature and most of his music was written there . Thanks

Montreal has done a great job in remembering Leonard Cohen ..... I was there recently, and it was so nice to see his murals and all sorts of books about him in the museums

Lucky to have seen him live before he walked in the out door playing the future second at his concert and graciously let his angelic back up singers perform hallelujah without his input! Absolutely beautiful rendition and simply wonderful performance from a man who is terrifically honest and sincere

Much appreciated. Saw Cohen twice, once in the seventies, once much later in the 20s. Missing him already.

I saw Cohen twice in Adelaide when I worked as local crew at the Entertainment Centre there. It was an amazing experience to see him up close - he was this frail old man who pulled himself up on stage clutching the rail of the stairs and looked like he could be blown over by a slight breeze but as soon as he started to speak and sing he seemed 10 feet tall and like an eternal, elemental being - it was the most uncanny thing I've ever seen - like his being was not contained in his physical frame.

This may be the first time an algorithm recommended exactly what I needed in a moment when I had no idea what I wanted. Thank you for posting this three years ago. It made someone's day better three years later.

To everyone who’s losing their shit because the narrator mentions the Great American Songbook, be aware that there is no Great British Songbook, no Great Canadian Songbook etc. It’s just a useful way to validate how good the songs are.

Great American songbook? Cohen was Canadian, as is Mitchell. Including Kanye in this sentence makes no sense whatsoever.

Really surprised that his observant Jewish family held his father's funeral with an open coffin. Very much contrary to Jewish tradition.

Cohen was never an American songwriter. He had nothing to do with the American songbook. Nice try Remnick.
