Lyrics:
Like a bird on a wire
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free
Like a worm on the hook
Like a knight from some old-fashioned book
I have saved all my ribbons for thee
And if I have been unkind
I hope that you will just let it go by
And if I have been untrue
I hope you know it was never to you
Like a babe stillborn
Like a beast with his horn
I have torn everyone who reached out for me
But I swear by this song
And by all that I have done wrong
I will make it all up to thee
I saw a beggar leaning on his wooden crutch
He said to me: "You must not ask for so much"
And the pretty woman leaning in her darkened door
She cried to me: "Hey, why not ask for more?"
Like a bird on the wire
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free

Fair comment Jamie, he was the best you have a good taste in music my dear friend.I have depressive episodes and symptoms of bipolar as well as aspergers syndrome.I really struggle at times.Nowadays everything is so remote and inpersonal, when what we really need is human contact that is sincere, loving and true to support each other. You have excellent taste in music friend and I salute you !!! Get his best of CD , great for playing in the Car Hehehehe :¬) !!!

Just commenting to observe he changed the lyrics in this version - the original goes: "If I, if I have been untrue I hope you know it was never to you" and he changed it to: "If I, if I have been untrue it's just that I thought a liar, I thought a lover had to be some kinda liar too" I think it's a very telling and lovely change and it probably makes the song more truthful... he had a lot of guilt saved up over his relationship with marianne, I reckon. writing later in his poem "days of kindness" he talks of his abandonment of “Marianne and the child”, and that he prays that “loving memory exists for them too / the precious ones I overthrew / for an education in the world”.

I have been in love with the music and the man since Judy Collins introduced him to the world in the '60s. Look at his hands, then his eyes. A great poet, a magical musician, a voice filled with passion and pain, love and ecstasy. He spoke to me one time while on stage, to tease me that my daughter had fallen asleep. It was the '80s and there I was in the front row with my sleepy 10 yr old and ex-husband. If I had any sense I'd have sent them home to his house and gone up to Leonard to apologize, in any way, whenever he was in LA. I might have if Joni Mitchell wasn't sitting in the audience. They had once been lovers. Sigh. I love him still and I am old and he is gone. I hope Joni enjoys her memories.

Hi Kate...Yeah..hindsight.... it's a thing ain't it. Glad you loved the guy...as much as I did. I was a latecomer to his music...But by God, He filled my life and sensibilities like no other. What a guy. I owe him so much. An absolute cornerstone of my life. I listen to him at every opportunity...and they just are not enough. God Bless You, Leonard. Thank You for your life. You Blessed The World.

One of my any favorites of the rich amount of music that Leonard Cohen left the world as his legacy. This particular song, one of his earliest, has been covered by some of the best which spreads the depth and beauty of his lyrics even further. Have no doubt, Leonard does it the best. But listen to Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash covers just for fun.

I wouldn’t really agree with you on that comment (or the 👍 it got by others). I’m 70ish now and music IS my ‘best friend’ - listening to all kinds/genres from morning till night every day I’m home. I haven’t experienced/reached the ‘saddest point…’ in my life as you phrased it, and yet can still relate with, and feel, this song deeply - i.e. I DO ‘get it’! Overall it’s beautiful and touching in many respects, so perhaps it’s some others who don’t have the ability to connect with and understand them - or don’t actually LISTEN to the lyrics to the song to feel the same?

You might get it, but you don't FEEL it the same way someone who's been there does. It isn't possible! I do not doubt it touches you, BUT if you haven't been there you can only imagine, intellectually conceive NOT FEEL
