Leonardo DiCaprio and Quentin Tarantino break down how they wrote and developed Rick Dalton, the main character in their new film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Tarantino explains how important early 1960s Hollywood leading men like Edd Byrnes and George Maharis were for the concept of Rick while DiCaprio goes into the challenges of playing him.

Eh? This kind of thing always happens when actors are promoting a film. It's not like they just got together for an unscheduled chat. They'll have done a ton of similar interviews, podcasts etc. That's why Leo looks bored in this video as he knows he's got another 9 hours of the same questions with various interviewers.

The whole movie kind of goes back and forth into the real late 60s Hollywood and a written one, I think that’s why it’s so good. I read about Sharon Tate after the movie, and it gave it a whole new level to the story I didn’t fully get while watching it. I’m sure someone who lived through this era, or knew more the 60s and 70s would absolutely revel in this movie. Also brad pitt was so so good, ugh.

4:31 I wonder if it occurred to Tarantino at all while he was making this point that DiCaprio hasn't altered his off-screen look for like practically 20 years now lol I'm not even saying that as a knock or criticism of Leo, it just seems kinda funny given the point QT's making. I know for the Rick Dalton character it's just as much about how Rick's always done even the same on screen look in his TV shows and modest movies, but it's also him remaining the same way when he wasn't working. Leo's pretty much been the Chris Nolan clone when not acting since post-Titanic (the only real difference is he used to wear his hair a bit longer back then, but he's even pretty much kept the same facial hair style/level)

Tarantino is a living, breathing full set of Encyclopedia Brittanica volumes all about cinema and the entire history of film....a beautiful, rare treasure that elevates this particular medium of art to a whole other level of appreciation and social commentary. Great film is something that truly resonates in your soul and stays with you. Tarantino encapsulates that process and the dynamics of life-changing art with unbridled enthusiasm and joy that makes us, the audience, uphold a cinematic masterpiece for the incredible gift that it truly is.

That backstory is what makes these characters believable and real. Nobody tells a story like Tarantino, and Leo is one of my favorite actors. I'm glad these two have partnered up together. This and Django really showcase DiCaprio's range, dedication, and talent. Bravo! I loved hearing this if for no other reason to get a feel for the dynamic of their working environment.

11:30 Tarantino's genius is that he knew that Hollywood needed directors who "know" what's going on, psychologically, and can verbalize what's going on. ...They don't have to get it right (its not physics), but they have to 100% believe they know exactly what's happening and why. James Cameron, in contrast, actually knows what's going on, physically.

Tarantino is that creative kid who has so much enthusiasms for his hobby and and whenever he gets the chance to talk about it nothing can stop him. I just love this man.

I watch and listen to quentin every night. His passion makes my days light up. I think hes a cure for depression. Listen to him hes the nicest and most passionate human ive ever listened too and followed.
