Concerning Leonidas and The 300 Spartans at Thermopolis , it is an irony of circumstance that they fought Xerxis's Persian Army for the survival of Western Democracy , teaching in Tokyo Japan I am often asked about the difference between the West and East , I always answer that the line between the East and The West began when Leonidas and his 300 Spartan fought Xerxis's Persian Army at Thermopolis .

It’s important to note that many Greek polis were oligarchies or monarchies with the notable exception of Athens. They fought for the freedom and independence of their polis. The unity of Hellenic purpose was important to obtain the necessary manpower and coordination to defeat the Persians, and not through any idealogical or cultural commonality. As we know Macedonia and Thebes gave way to the Persians at the time of the Persian invasion. Indeed during the Peloponnesian war the Spartans actively and successfully obtained Persian assistance to defeat Athens. A complex yet fascinating history that has parallels in todays geopolitics.

Allways considered the Spartans and its allies in battle of Thermopyle to be the most badass in the Persian wars, but changed my mind when I learned more about the Athenian fleet. Imagine fighting for days in Artemesium, rowing back to Athens, transporting its entire population across to Salamis. Then without almost no rest, do battle again against Xerxes and win, after that also defeating the fleet which was going around Salamis.

LOL. Gotta love Gerry Butler. He has gotten stuck in the mud of type-casting. Always being the Good Guy Hero, and he is great in the "....fallen" movies, as Secret Service Agent Mike Banning, (him being a former 75th Reg. Ranger makes me HAVE to like that character) RLTW !! But he has experience doing Shakespeare, and started out as a singer trying to get his band a record deal. Another reason for me to like him as a person. He actually was supposed to whisper "This is Sparta" like a snake, but after a few takes he just went bat-shit and screamed "THIS.....". Great guy who doesn`t play the Hollywood game at all. He is a Scot thru and thru !!

If anyone is having trouble keeping all these names straight - don't feel bad. I am 67 years old and have studied this period for most of my life, and I still have trouble with it sometimes! 😅 Also - there is huge variation in the modern pronunciation of ancient Greek names. My best advice on that subject (again, after many years of study!) would just be, "Don't worry about it." 😅

There were initially 6k-7k Greeks at the battle, there were actually 2500 Greeks that stayed behind to fight to the death (300 Were spartans), the rest left to muster up a larger army and warn the other Greek City States. Spartans get all the credit, but there were 1800 from another Greek state that stood and fought to the death, plus 400 Greek slaves from other nearby city states that Sparta had conquered.

Wow, great documentary. We all know this famous story of the 300 Spartans and their noble fight to the death defending Greece. However, your video really showed how complex this episode of history really was (as history almost always it). Your final question really illustrates this main point: Was Leonidas a hero deserving all the historical fame heaped on him over the centuries, or was he a despot who enslaved the helots and forced them to fight? Very intriguing question! The true answer is likely complex and defies a simple explanation.
@thisissparta8884

I think beyond a reasonable doubt he is a hero. To stand and fight as they did not only showed great courage but how important freedom is. If I was a soldier I would rather give it my all on the battlefield as they did then cowering somewhere.
