The UAE is making residency easier and for longer term though, with ever more lenient terms for example for golden visa. There has been a distinct shift in expats mentality in the last few years, with more and more make Dubai their long term home. And there is no other place like it in the world, a dynamic world class large city with very low tax, high economic freedom which is easy to get residence in. Singapore is maybe the closest, but it's not easy to get residency there, and also Singapore has significantly higher taxes than Dubai. Monaco has even lower tax than Dubai, but it's super difficult to get residency there and Monaco is not a large city (even if you generously count in the French surrounding areas). So as bankrupt governments keep increasing taxes, I think wealthy and successful people will keep moving to Dubai - you already see it in the statistics of where high net worth individuals move, Australia is no 1 (cause of influx of chinese), but the UAE is no 2, then Singapore, US, Switzerland, Canada. The only one that matters somewhat is oil and gas, which the UAE happens to have a lot of. At the same time human capital matters more than ever and is in an uptrend in importance. Where smart and successful people go, is waaay more important than natural resources. Like do you want to be Switzerland, Netherlands, Japan (rich, few natural resources), or Congo, Nigeria, Venezuela (poor, tons of natural resources).

@@martinsjogren4366 Interesting points. UAE is trying to become an AI hub too. I think people discount the amazing job (all things considered) that the ruler has done to get the city to this point. Also, sometimes people comment without visiting the place. Yeah, summers are hot, but from November to, perhaps May the weather is great. Sooner or later for the population to stabilize, citizenship or long term residency will have to be an option, as many other places are starting to think about this as they loose high net worth individuals and ordinary folk realise they are not getting value for money. Some countries waste money on weapons and oppressing other people at the expense of their own peoples is becoming more apparent as is the general lack of vision from leaders. On the other hand, the ruler of Dubai stated he wanted Dubai to be the best city in the world, and he's working towards that.
