Well I'm not sure if it's cannon, but in the 1999 HXH there are more romantic/gay scenes of them together. I guess you could say they are both important to each other. But the original voice actors of Leorio and Kurapika ship them, we know this because they do I guess roleplays as both Leorio and Kurapika where they are dating. I have watched a few audio's of it. I ship them also, I think of them as the Mother and Father of the group.
