there was no "pitch shift", the pitch sounds different because you cannot hear the accompanying instruments from the band. hearing the instruments with his vocals makes it seem like it is a different pitch of vocals, but its not.

Sad But True is in D Locrian which is similar to D minor. It works because the original song is in D major.

​@@orion7741 Well, I was not expecting to actually have to go deep into this, but I listened again to the original: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/odigobBykrSXXZc.html and the one with just vocals: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bdKUpbSZrNnTfmw.html The first "true" in the original song seems to start briefly at D, bounce off that to D#, and then back to D. The second one seems to be E F E D, although the E is slightly off. I suppose that I can treat that as what Hetfield meant to sing as opposed to trying to sing a D# and missing. Now, I will try to compare it to this mashup. First, everything seems to be pitched a half-step-down to accommodate being in E in the verses and F#. The first "true" seems to move from C# to D# and then back to C#, it being a full-step instead of a half-step in the original. THIS is what I was referring to in my previous post. The second one starts on that weird E flat/E note that goes to F, back to that off E note, and down to C#. So, it is the same except it goes a half-step lower to match up with the rest of the vocals being a half-step lower. Now, maybe that is not McClintock did and I am just hearing things incorrectly. He can correct me if he wants.

The reason a lot of these mashups work is because major and minor keys are interchangeable.. so a melody sang in a minor key will sound perfectly reasonable with a major key, as is the case here. No pitch shifting or autotune required (or perhaps just the absolute bear minimum)

And ‘doo do loo loo-sad but true…doo do loo loo-sad true’ is also brilliant. I actually like this as a stand alone song.
