I have tried a ton of hooks trying to find my special hook. FYI: you can donate hooks to children at school that has a stitching club, Girl Scouts or even nursing homes. All of which take yarn you don’t want as well. I have donated all of mine to a school club and Girl Scouts after giving a set to my niece.

I started to crochet on 12/31/2022 , and a couple of weeks later, I bought the Yarniss crochet hooks. I have been using nothing but those hooks since then, and I thought that they worked well. Well, I watched your video 3 days ago and went out immediately to Joanna's and used my 50% coupon for the last set of Clover Hooks in stock. I am currently crocheting my first sweater, I have timed myself with my Yarniss hooks, and I average 10:35 minutes per row on my sleeve. With my clover hooks, I average 6:45!! I am shocked! I appreciate your video!!

Your crochet hook review was interesting. My favorite and only hook didn't make your list - Boye. Started with the Boye and will always stay with the Boye. It's sleek and slender and glides through my fingers like a dream. I don't have a death grip on my hook and wouldn't be able to work with all the modern ergonomic shaped hooks available on the market today.

Yarniss is a perfect beginner’s set imo! it’s the set i started with and i couldn’t tell that the metal dragging was an issue until i had committed to crochet enough to upgrade to Clover Amours - without the comparison of a really smooth hook i couldn’t tell it was a problem! i highly recommend Yarniss for beginners bc it gives you everything you need and speed isn’t as much of an issue for beginners

@@threeofcats5803 Actually it looks like several people are saying that they used something (an alcohol wipe, brown paper, etc) to wipe the factory coating off the hooks and that they're much smoother once you do that, so hopefully that'll work well for you too!

Choosing a hook is so subjective. I have tried the prym and I really don’t like the way they feel in my hands and they are too long. My daughter has larger hands and she has used it some. The drag sometimes bothers me but I haven’t noticed it much with the set of yarnis. The shape of the hook is of utmost importance to me. The prym and all the bates hooks have that crook in the hook that hangs up every time I try to make a stitch. I don’t use them. I know you love the Furls, but they are way too big for me to grip. I lean on old standbys like clover amour, soft touch and yarnology by Hobby lobby.

My Furls glitter resin hook fell a very short distance and shattered in pieces. It's a fake wood type floor. I'm satisfied with my Odyssey but I've spent all I'm spending with them. Glad you brought up the supply problem. I'm a Susan Bates girl but use what the yarn dictates. Just ordered a furls looking resin hook off Etsy to give that type another try. Thank you for doing this. I found the same results with the soft touch etc.

I bought the Yarnis set when I first started learning crochet a few years ago. At the time I really like the set and found no problem with it. Then I learned more and decided to upgrade to a Tulip Etimo set. When I first tried it I was amazed at how the stitches moved like butta!! So smooth! It was a tremendous difference. I would recommend the Yarnis set for someone maybe who just wants to try out crochet to see if they like it. I also love the Clover as well. I never understood about the smoothness till I got these nicer ones. It was amazing.

14:46 it’s really interesting to see and hear other people preferences. For certain yarns and certain projects I actually like a little drag. It does slow me down, but that’s a good thing for me sometimes because when I start going too fast I make mistakes. The drag forces me to think about what I’m doing. I especially love it for sugar n cream yarn. It just slides all over the place on my smooth metal hooks and makes it harder to work with. With my Prym hooks, I have so much more control of the yarn. I just love that we have so many options and there is really a hook for every person and every type of project!

I bought a glasses case that's shaped like a pencil case with a boxed end (same as the evil hooks 2nd to last - and I've since bought an actual pencil case with a boxed end lol) & they're great! I get diff size pencil cases & one has my fave hooks n small pair scissors, other has my tiny 2mm n below lace hooks (my expensive clover lace hooks are kept in an old fashioned metal pencilcase to stop damage to the fine hooks). In have bigger one to hold things like more scissors, measuring tape etc & another for my 8mm plus hooks as I rarely use them. I then make a wee loop of yarn I put thru the top of the zip (n also put one on the finger hole of my scissors) n use that to hold my stitch markers.

I ended giving them all away since I bought a set after trying other brands. My favorite was Susan Bates. I'd be willing to try a clover amore. I tried their plastic one and find it works okay with some yarns, but others, its like nails on a chalk board, both in sound and overall experience. But none of the ones I tried, bothered me as much as the boye ones. And none did I like more than Susan bates

I typically don't choose the "one handle, several heads" sets because I usually have lots of WIPS going at the same time (and I keep the hook with the project so I don't change sizes mid-project). I agree that the wooden, plastic, and resin hooks are annoying with wool and standard acrylic, but when I work with a slippery yarn like silk or a satin- finish manufactured yarn, I appreciate the extra control that the non-metal hooks provide.

I have a ton of WIPs at all times, too. I don't have enough hooks to keep them with the projects and I've been known to lose them often in a skein of yarn. lol What I do is cut a piece of notebook paper at the hole, write the hook size and brand on it, and attach it to the work with a stitch marker. It saves me so much time searching for hooks I've lost. lol

I am a Clover Amour girl! I started to crochet with a Boye hook..it got the job done. Next was the Susan Bates & loved them especially the rubber handle ones. Then bought just one Clover and fell in love! Although the full set is pricey..I bought my set with a 60% off coupon from JoAnne’s & have been ‘happily hooking’ ever since 🥰🧶. I did purchase a Furls resin hook (it was just so pretty & on sale) but had a bad experience. My hook had a chip in the hook head, completely unusable. Customer Service was great & sent me a replacement hook at no charge but the hook seems so fragile so I don’t use it at all. I just admire it’s prettiness. I have not tried an Odyssey as I just can’t justify the cost of the hook. I’d rather spend the money on yarn 🤗. Thank you for the great review! 😘🧶

I’ve been tempted to try other hooks (especially ergonomic ones as I’m getting older and starting to have pain in my hands), but I just cannot like a tapered hook. All that said, I loved your video and I love your channel! Thanks for sharing your opinions!

What you are looking for is aluminum hooks. If the hooks are made of steel or another metal, they seem to drag. You are not going to get super smooth crocheting if the hooks are not polished aluminum. You will pay more but they don't aggravate you and they will last possible a lifetime. My go-to hooks are the Clover Etimo with 2nd place going to the orange Clover hooks. I've been a sucker for the very pretty inexpensive Amazon hooks too! They do look pretty in mason jars as decoration in my craft room LOL! Thank you for the video!

I've tried all the fancy ones all the KZfaqrs brag about like clover, Susan Bates, even sprung fo furls which I find so heavy. However I started with metal/aluminum boye hooks n ended with the ergonomic boye hooks. Those are my go to, to this day. I rarely find people that love the boye ones as well

I'm so glad you loved the counting crochet hook so much!! I'm new to crochet and I've wasted so much time losing track of my stitches and rows, so learning that a hook line this existed felt like a dream come true! Because it seemed like such a novelty though, I was kind of skeptical about whether it would actually work in function or if it was just a gimmick, so hearing you put it in your top three really gave me a lot of confidence!

I love the clover amor crochet hooks they are so easy to work with. They do not snag up or split the yarn the metal is super smooth too. When I started crocheting I used the old Boyle metal hooks which are very hard on your hands and pulls and snags and splits the yarn. The Clover hooks are the best and feels very good in and comfortable in your hand. I bought mine one at a time over an extended period of time. Anytime I had a coupon at Joann’s or Hobby Lobby I would try and buy a size I didn’t have.

In my opinion, the crochet hook you like most might be that way because it "fits" the project you are working on. I have found that for certain projects a metal hook is best, but certain others work best with a resin. Some are like and we psych ourselves into liking it because it appeals to everything we WANT to like, and we use it despite the fact it's not perfect. I like your ranking though, Elise. Thank you.

A recommendation especially with brand new hooks- if they’re catching and squeaking like that off the bat, take sone alcohol wipes if you have them or something similar and scrub down the hook head. Never know what may be there from manufacturing and whatnot. My absolute favorite hook (though they don’t go smaller than a 5mm from what I’ve seen so major bummer for amigurumi) is usually squeaky when you first get it but a few good scrubs and it’s like the perfect texture. Sometimes I find something Clover (I swear the soft touch is worse in this regard than the Amour) can be a bit too smooth and I’ll drop stitches a lot if I’m working fast so I like a bit of grip. But depends on the project and yarn. Sometimes I prefer resin for the light weight and that little bit of grip, sometimes I love the slip of an Amour. But on any material- give it a good scrub. My favorite hook is kind of a Clover Amour copycat made by Hobby Lobby. (Oh, they’re Yarnology and seeing you love the set you have- if you get a chance try these ones! They only sell them single) I think the packaging just says “luxury crochet hook” and there’s several different varieties that say this but these are resin or similar to whatever the material is Clover uses on their larger size hooks and the handles are all multi colored and maybe slightly larger than an Amour with a bit more of a grippy texture (kind of like a Boye ergonomic- a little more squish and grip in your hand than the Amour). It’s like the perfect blend of a lot of hooks. I find the Prym hooks interesting because I have tiny hands and tend to choke up on the hook and hold them way close to the tip (that’s the other thing about the Hobby Lobby hook I mentioned. It’s even shorter than an Amour and probably my shortest hook which may be a major negative for others!) and Prym is considerably longer than pretty much every other hook I have. Hobby Lobby does a dupe of them that’s not quite as good and obnoxiously they also keep the super hard to see sizing thing on the darn thing. I’m really big on experimenting with new hooks because I have relatively significant hand and arm disabilities and I find different hooks can make a radical difference in amount of pain I experience and how long I can work. Some hooks cause me pain within a few minutes or work, that Hobby Lobby hook I love so much I can work with all day long. So massive, massive amount of difference and while I don’t generally recommend any specific hook to folks, whenever I hear people talk about pain or disability issues I always say try lots of hooks! Tulip and particular the resin Furls (don’t think the weight of the wood ones will be a good fit for me because of their weight. I love my Yarnology because it’s so similar to Amour but lighter weight- enough so it makes a difference when working for longer periods. Just wish they did those smaller sizes!) are still on my list of hooks to try. I may have to try that whole Yarnology set too, especially to get the smaller sizes. My current thing I’m looking for- ergonomic steel hooks. I’m kind of getting into working with crochet threads and fingering or lace weight yarns but there’s not a lot of options for the steel hooks and even the smallest of the standard/aluminum hook sizes. (Can you tell I love geeking out over hooks? 😂 Loved this video!)

I've been using the Clover Amour for more than six years and I still love them as much as ever. But I also really love my Tulips and Dots. The Clover and Dots are the ones I use the most. I don't care for plastic hooks and the metal ones need to be smooth. A lot of people complain that the Dots hooks aren't smooth, but I haven't had too much of a problem. I had a problem one time of one of the Dots dragging a little, but then I just wiped it down with a microfiber cloth and now it works perfectly. I use them everyday along with my Clovers. I like my Clover Soft Touch is ok IF I am sweaty. The handle is too slippery in my hand. The Bates hooks are ok, but not my favorite. I hate Boye hooks. I have two of the Furls Odyssey hooks that I asked for. Unfortunately, I have a really hard time using them, so they just look pretty with all of my other hooks. I've got the pink handled, gold head Furls.

My favorite is the Boye hooks also. I saw how highly rated the Furls Odessey hooks were so I went looking for one. Ended up buying it on eBay and paid a premium price for it. The metal was the smoothest thing I’ve ever felt in a crochet hook. It was amazing. My problem is that I’m utilize a pencil hold for crochet and it’s awful for that. It felt wonderful in my hand holding it like a knife but I just can’t crochet like that. I’m going to chalk it up to live and learn.

I wanted to love the Furls Odyssey hooks. I went berserk and bought about 6 of them. However, I cannot like the inline hooks. They slow me down and seem to catch on the yarn. I have tried to use them dozens of times, but just can't. I do love the handles though. I then bought a set of Clover. Amour hooks and I like them a lot, but I find the handles kind of short as I like a longer handle. So then I found BQueen hooks. They are closed now due to a fire unfortunately, but I love their hooks. They have a wooden handle and a metal hook that feels like a Clover. The handles are a nice size and easy for me to hold. I managed to get 7 of them before they closed. They are pricey, but I just decided that being pain free is worth the cost of these hooks. I also have Tulip hooks in pink and gray and like them a lot as well.

I actually love Clover Soft Touch. They are very light and I like how they feel in my hand. Maybe because I don't like ingrip hooks that much and this one is very lightweight in comparison to most. I'm also a fan of wooden hooks, especially in bigger sizes. I think it shows pretty well how different preferences crocheters can have. But I totally agree with your opinion about Addi Swing! Thanks for the review. I agree with the criteria you use: smoothness, handle feel, shank length, ease of identifying size. I use the knife grip as you do, and do many amigarumi and other sculpted projects. My preferred head shape is the inline. Regarldess of fiber type, inline glides through stiches smoothly and does not split the yarn - for me. I do have inline and pointed hooks in my collection. The only time I use pointed is with my steel hooks as i've never found inline in those tiny sizes - my finest hook is a #14, suitable for fine sewing thread/ #100 threads. As a teacher, when i see a student still having difficulties halfway through the first lesson, i have them switch from whatever style they began with to a different style, or sometimes the alternative grip. As each of us is unique, those changes make the difference between someone having fun leatning and someone too discouraged to want to keep learning.

If you look back at vintage crochet hooks, you will find nothing like ergonomic handles or 'big and fat' ones. Why is that? Do you think crocheters back then had no idea what is good or bad for their hands? Look at jewellery or tableware done by a proper masters. Every item done by hand is a proper masterpiece. Do you think these people wasnt able to do anything as today mass production? Yes,back then wasnt so many materials to choose from, but wood, leather, later on backelite, natural resin was available. So,these big and fat round hook handles are 21st century 'treasure '. If you are holding your hook correctly, you wont be able to use these hooks, because it is tiring and very painful to your hands. When you are learning to crochet, plese, try to do it correctly, because later on you will have a lot of problems with your joints and muscles. I have weak joints, fibromyalgia pains all over my body, but with clover soft grip I can crochet all day long without any pain. I love vintage metal hooks as well. They are very sharp and best for cotton doilies. Also metal on the hook polishes over time from constant using and a bit rough surface becames super smooth over the time.

For point of reference I crochet using a pencil grip. And my all time fave is the clover armour. I have a set of the Yarness that my SiL got me one year for Christmas before I had my Clocer Armour set. The handles are pretty comfortable and very well designed. Very much a relief to use for small hook sizes. They were my first set of ergonomic hooks and they're OK. I still use them as back up hooks or a crochet on the go kit. Defentaly a good price point too. If you're learning and you don't have a ton of money to spend they'd make a decent first set of hooks or upgrading from Boye or Susan Bates hooks. I found puting on a bit of Badger Balm or Burts Bee's hand salve or cutical balm on my fingers/hands and rubing the hook helps the drag problem. As does runing the hook through my clean hair by my scalp. (I MAY have discovered the hack after useing my spare Boye size J hooks as a hair stick.)

Yarniss set are the ones I’ve started out with and still use today. And I had no clue that hook metal matters. It makes so much sense now! Thank you for the review!

I ❤ my Clover Amour crochet hooks. Having learnt crocheting in later life I needed a hook that didn’t hurt my hands and these are just right, not too thick or thin. They are all I need.

Glad to see that your number one is my favorite too. I have not tried as many as you have but absolutely love my Clovers. I think the way you hold makes a difference also, although I'm a pencil style. When I got back into crocheting a few years ago, I did not even know the difference between Boye and Susan Bates! Did not know what a difference a hook would make until I tried different ones!

I agree with Clovers as the number one hook. I started crocheting with a Boyd 3.75 because that is the only hook my mother-in-law used, so i thought that was the correct hook to use. I made the Navajo afghan for 13 years with that small hook. I will say that they are by far the warmest afghans I ever made because the stitches are so small. 😊 Once, I started to learn more about yarns and learned to read a pattern. I realized just how much I was missing out on. I gave Clover Hooks a try, and I have never looked back. Thank you for reviewing so many different hooks and showing how many different ones are out there to try.

I agree with the number 1 pick. I have bought several crochet hooks but I always keep reaching for my Clover Amour hooks. The metal is super smooth and the handle is soft. 🧶

I have used several types from bamboo to glass and i always go back to my boyds and bates metal. I inherited mom and grandmas sets of steel susan bates. I watched another video you made and now use cosmetic blenders to hold on with more arthritic hands. It keeps the cold metal from hurting me when too hot to wear gloves. I may try another set but for now it works for me. I found a beautiful yarn bowl ceramic at our habitat for humanity large size double holder for 20.00. I believe i use the pencil hold for my hook and use flat on my 30some year old bates to flip back and forth to make stitches. Very little stress on hands and wrist this way. I also noticed the new bates seem to be aluminum now not sreel. Your information is good. I will continue to watch as i like seeing new things arise from a very old skill😊

That's great! I've heard that Susan Bates were much better back in the day and now the quality is much poorer. That's great that you added the beauty blenders it make them ergonomic! 🧶🧶🧶

When I first started crocheting over 11 years ago, the only hooks I knew about were Susan Bates, then I went ergonomic because the metal hurt so bad. Afterwards, I would only purchase custom made, which of course got a bit pricey. Fast forward to the present, I am in love with the following: 1. Furls Streamline Resin hooks, 2. Clover plastic large hooks. Now, I also have the Prym line, also, those Hobby Lobby plastic ( for the purposes of TSA approval) hooks too, but my Number One Go To crochet hook is Furls Streamlines! I so love these hooks, and I’m always able to catch a great deal on them! This was a great comparison video.

Hooray! My favorite is your number 1. I was a huge fan of the Susan Bates hooks before I tried the Clover Amour hooks. I even looked at the Bates hooks that have the grip...but, since I'm a pencil grip stitcher, it just didn't look like something I would be comfortable using for any length of time. This was an awesome video, Elise. You really loaded it up with lots of useful information on a lot of hooks I've been curious about for years. Thank you so much. 🥰

I'm so glad you love the clover hooks 😆😆😆😆😆!!!!!!!! It has been my go-to since day one and a lot of people don't acknowledge them. I agreed with all of your opinions on the hooks that you showed I feel the same way about all of them as well. I'm so happy that we both have very similar taste in crochet hooks 😁😁😁.
