LEPROUS - Castaway Angels (OFFICIAL VIDEO)
Obtain the new single here: leprousband.lnk.to/CastawayAn...
Einar Solberg / LEPROUS commented as follows:
"This year we've all had to readjust our lives, do new things. Missed out on things we were supposed to do, and find new things to do. One day in the beginning of the corona outbreak in Norway I came to TorO's house with a song we were supposed to work on together. The problem was that I was already finished with the sketch we were supposed to be working on (which was later on thrown away as it wasn't that good after all), so we just sat down to try to make something new. Him with the acoustic guitar, and me with my voice. During a quite short time, we came up with the main structure of what was later to become “Castaway Angels”. Very basic, very pure and no technology to distract us. Just the melody and the guitar. So once we got in the amazing Ocean Sound Recording near Aalesund, Norway we continued that approach with the full band. We recorded the song together in the studio (when we were not busy sitting in the Jacuzzi being in awe by the view) in one take, after jamming together for one evening. It's so typical to get obsessed with details, perfectionism and layers. But here we just wanted to play together. Do something pure and simple. I'm very pleased with the result, and can't wait for everyone to hear how we've been spending time together when we were supposed to be on tour."

The last day of 2020, my younger brother suddenly passed away, only 49 years old. The day before his heart just stopped, he posted this song on his FB, making the remark that "If someone says to better forget 2020 as soon as possible, this person didn't hear this song yet: Castaway Angels by Leprous. Yes, it's from 2020... You can thank me later." But with his passing, this song is now charged with an enormous extra meaning... It almost feels as if he chose this song as his goodbye, and he couldn't have chosen a more beautiful and relevant song. Thank you so much Leprous, for this precious gem. I will never be able to listen to this song without a tear in my eye, but I can't stop listening. And RIP little brother, we love you forever...

Onwijs bijzonder dat hij deze op zijn laatste avond postte... Ik heb het de dag erna 1,5 uur onafgebroken geluisterd in de trein en nogal wat tranen gelaten. He succeeded. Those last 2 minutes were a tour de force (as a counter tenor, I can hit all off it, but don't know if I could have the combination of brittleness on the high parts and the power on the lows, especially on that big drop). Majority is all up in the 5th octave, and while he does go falsetto and needs a touch of vibrato to sustain the notes (rather than straight tone) the tone quality is perfectly bright and clear and that full octave drop into belting...so good.

The vocal line is the highlight here, no doubt. But all the instrumental work is so precise, everything fits right into place. The smooth electric guitar fading in and out, the discontinuous drum lines, the subtle bass, everything is perfect. This level of musical maturity is rare, pure gold.

If they continue the pattern then a new album will be out next year. Because since 2009, when their first album was released, they released a new album every two years. So even if that song doesn't have anything to do with a new album, we can almost be sure that they will drop an album either way.😁 At least if they keep it like that. LYRICS: Reaching out for oblivion Hiding here for now Dreaming still about another end I can't look back anymore Never look back, never look back again Never look back, never look back again Never look back, never look back And I wanna know if there's an army waiting And now, I wanna know where we are, where we are And I Know, there's a chance we'll be castaway angels And I wanna know, for sure Sitting here counting minutes still I've found my place in solitude Help me face this nothingness For my vision is gone Never look back, never look back again Never look back, never look back again Never look back, never look back Never look back, never look back Never look back, never look back again Never look back, never look back again Never look back, never look back And I wanna know if there's an army waiting And now, I wanna know where we are, where we are And I Know, there's a chance we'll be castaway angels And I wanna know, for sure And I wanna know if there's an army waiting And now, I wanna know where we are, where we are And I Know, there's a chance we'll be castaway angels And I wanna know, for sure And I Know, there's a chance we'll be castaway angels And I wanna know, for sure

To me, after the first few listens, they're about someone pondering their future, and even though they know that there is a lot of uncertainty and fears they've yet to experience, they'd rather move forward than be stuck in the past with their mistakes. I also love the line about will there be "an army waiting", which could also be interpreted as "will there be a resolution for our problems", or a purpose for all the chaos - A fitting message for 2020

The first time that I listened to this song it was mid 2021 and I almost cried thinking about the loss time before I discovered this song. Aphelion has to be my favorite Leprous' record. Almost three years later, I can still feel my eyes feel with tears with Einar's voice at the beginning of the song. Wonderful, amazing, and fantastic work.

Bilateral is straight up their worst album, it's like it has Mars Volta energy but it has nothing that makes Mars Volta as cool as they are. Forced Entry is a top 5 Leprous song tho

Bilateral was peak Leprous, but only because it saw them exploring every soundscape they used in later albums. Up until pitfalls, inclusively, you still get some common ideas prototyped in Bilateral. The album itself is my fav, but it has some flaws. Lack of direction is one (even compared to tall poppy) and at least 2 songs could be removed for a better experience. Band's still got it, though.

Nah, Leprous peaked on Tall Poppy, they were good afterwards up to Malina, Pitfalls was garbage, and based on this single their new album will be even worse, shame, talented musicians doing shitty pop rock when they could do so much more.

Musically, Leprous is indeed among the most talented of modern prog groups, but Einar's lyrics really bring them up to top tier. I can relate so much to them, or at least what I believe them to mean. Most of their songs feel like they come from long hours spent deeply scrutinizing existence and always coming up without answers. This one in particular feels like its written about being nearly convinced that there is no afterlife or cosmic consequence to anything an individual does in this life, but still having a few lingering doubts or fears that there may be something not great waiting for us across the mortal threshold.

[first verse] Reaching out for oblivion Hiding here for now Dreaming still 'bout another end I can't look back any more [pre Chorus] Never look back, never look back again Never look back, never look back again Never look back, never look back [Chorus] And I wanna know If there's an army waiting And now I wanna know Where we are Where we are And I know there's a chance We'll be castaway angels But I wanna know for sure [second verse] Sitting here, counting minutes still Found my place in solitude Help me face this nothingness For my vision is gone

Yeah but if they continue the pattern then a new album will be out next year. Because since 2009, when their first album was released, they released a new album every two years. So even if that song doesn't have anything to do with a new album, we can almost be sure that they will drop an album either way.😁 At least if they keep it like that. I mean, they did it five times now so...😅
