I thought it would be neat to try Les Carmes Haut Brion as it is getting a lot of media attention. I tried it along side the 2nd wine of La Mission (La Chapelle de la Mission Haut Brion)
In 2010, Les Carmes Haut Brion was purchased by Patrice Pichet, head of the Bordeaux real estate company, Groupe Pichet. In 2013, the Pichot group began a complete renovation of the chateau and wine-making facilities. In total, the entire hectare vineyard of Les Carmes Haut Brion is 29.6 hectares, of which 22 hectares grow vines. However, only 7.6 hectares of vines are used to produce Les Carmes Haut Brion (the rest is used to produce its 2nd wine, Le C des Carmes Haut Brion) The vineyard is planted to 41% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Franc, and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. With the 2015 vintage, Les Carmes Haut Brion started to vinify about half of their fruit whole cluster. About 4000 cases of this wine is made each year. The blend of the 2017 vintage is 41% Cabernet Franc, 30% Merlot, and 29% Cabernet Sauvignon

In 1600s, it was bequeathed to the Congregation of the Mission.
1983 - purchased by Clarence Dillon. Vineyard: 45.8% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43.8% Merlot, and 10.4% Cabernet Franc.
La Chapelle debuted in 1991. 49.2% Merlot, 8.9% Cabernet Franc and 41.9% Cabernet Sauvignon,

Les Carmes Haut Brion is flying the last few years, the Les Carmes monks in 1584 knew what they were doing when they choose this location to plant their wine :)

Nick: thank you for viewing my video and your comments. I had heard so much about this wine so I had to try it myself. I think it is a good wine for the price but as price starts creeping up, less of a value play. It is very good review. I noticed many wines of 2017 vintage around shop, it is helpful for my shopping ref as you covered this vintage.

Great review as always and interesting comparison. For me I would prefer Les Carmes of recent vintages over La Chapelle anytime.

dominicschmidt: thank you for viewing my video and your comment. That is the beauty of wine...we can have our different opinions and no one person is right or wrong. This is just one vintage but I thought I needed to taste myself to form my own opinion on the wine. It will be interesting to wait 10 years and see how the La Carmes performs. Hello! Great video, and I'm glad to see your take on Les Carmes, which I've been very curious about. As you mention, it's a "hot" wine these days and it's helpful to hear your take. I wonder how Clarence HB would fit in with this tasting. Thanks so much!!!

noahcap: Clarence HB is a great wine for the price but a lot less than Les Carmes. Les Carmes is not part of the HB family but I think Clarence HB really does well to fit the value market. Cheers!

I just do not understand changing your rating on a wine after half a day of aeration.

str1fe5: thank you for viewing my video and your comment. I think in fact it is better to rate a wine based on multiple tastings of a wine. Please remember, I don't just taste...the first day I had the wine over a couple of hours with dinner. The next day I have the wine again for over another meal. Then I do my video review. Then I base my score on all 3 tastings (which are really not tastings but drinking sessions where the wine evolves). Sometimes it is an average of the scores and sometimes it is what I think is the true self of the wine. For most Trophy Wines, the real score (which is personal and subjective anyways) will only be revealed after hours of aeration and having the wine at different times. In my opinion, that is why people are giving Carmes such high scores. They are not drinking for long enough to let the wine settle to its equilibrium. To me, it is an early drinking wine that is medium bodied. For me, no comparison to La Mission in terms of intensity and body and that is why I drank it with La Mission 2nd wine. You really get to see this after extended aeration. Please like, subscribe and keep watching. Cheers!

I know I don't always use the right terminology but I almost try to do this on purpose because I want people to know you don't have to know everything about wine or always be correct about everything to enjoy wine. Knowledge is important but I find too many people focus on the study of wine and not enough people actually drink the stuff to have an educated viewpoint.. Cheers!

as people have less issues ripening Cabernets, everybody is getting rid of Merlots so fast 😅

@@TrophyWineHunter yes, if you dig deep into history of Bordeaux, Merlot got popular because even if year was not ripe, you would be able to sculpt a decent wine with smooth mouthfeel, unlike Cabernet family 😁 and if we are been honest, truly great wines from Merlot are under clay soil. otherwise its just a “smoother” “filler” grape. p.s. it is also higher yielding grape than any other Bordeaux guys, that was also a factor of its early popularity

@@TrophyWineHunter Cantenac this, Brane, Brown, Boyd. Barton, Poyferre, Las Case. Ducru this and that, etc. When doing 1855, they should have made it easier for us consumers buying the wine to figure out exactly what it is we're buying! **Burgundy enters the room**

Love the pessac-Léognan comparison! I’ve always been a fan of “Les Charmes Haut-Brion” I actually have some older vintages of this wine in my cellar so excited to see your review on it ! I knew this would be a winery that was bough by a company to put money in and replant/renovate. (Pontet-Canet being another kinda similar example of this happening)… Where it would finally reach a grander potential because Cab-franc was becoming super trendy in the Sommolier community and this wine has some of the highest percentages in the left bank. (Also why I was such a fan because I love Cab franc) I used to buy this wine for $60 thinking it was a steal and it’s triple that now which blows me away.. the wine is on a great path seeing and tasting the improvements. Also super cool the winery has experimented with partial Amphora 🏺 aging I just really like what they are doing! Regarding the change in a day I can agree with that, some wines need dayssssss other wine are just ready. But it is best to drink when it’s ready and to enjoy it judging off that experience because the palate knows. However, I like that you actually showed the comparison so people not familiar understand. I think you expressed a sentiment similar to this when decanting older wines thinking you had to drink them immediately or they would fade and you almost didn’t enjoy the experience. Drinking the wine and enjoying it when it good and seeing it changes over time really tells you everything and give you the full experience. 🍷 Apologies for the long response but big fan of this wine and glad you talked about them and enjoyed ! I agree it is now not a steal anymore reviewers have ruined that haha it’s expensive and maybe not worth its price atm but we shall see in 10 years when those vines have some more age.

wyatt: thank you for your comment. I really had to try Carmes myself as I have read and heard a lot about it but I wanted to taste myself. I think I understand people are pretty high on this winery but I think we need a few more years before we can proclaim this is now in an elevated league. Cheers!
