Red and Black Song Les Miserables 2012 Soundtrack
This is one of my favorite scenes in the whole movie. The conflict between love and revolution.. Hope you enjoy!
Red, the blood of angry men,
Black, the dark of ages past.
Red, a world about to dawn,
Black, the night that ends at last.
Red, I feel my soul on fire,
Black, my world if she’s not there.
Red, it’s the colour of desire,
Black, it’s the colour of despair.

+Fairy Meets Edgelord Actually, according to the original novel, Enjolras is what we today would call asexual. There is literally a whole massive paragraph explaining this in half a dozen different ways. His only love is France, as seen when he is described as the "marble lover of Liberty," the word 'lover' being used in the same way it is in the phrase 'they were lovers.' Grantaire may be in love with Enjolras, as seen in various Greek mythology references and other inferences, but Hugo makes it clear that those feelings are one sided. In fact, Enjolras constantly shows extreme irritation with Grantaire because Grantaire is always drinking (which Enjolras despises) and never actually seems to follow through on any of his promises to aid the revolution.

In the book, Courfeyrac seems to get around (yes, with women), Grantaire is possibly gay, (though Hugo couldn't make it too obvious considering the time period) , Marius is straight, and Enjolras is asexual/aromantic, at least that's my theory, (and he's also mostly oblivious to Grantaire's near worship of him, until the end). I Dont know about the rest.

George Blagden has portrayed Grantaire perfectly. I love his sassy attitude, how he obviously only wants to mess with Enjolras when he is encouraging Marius to sing about his love life and when he is drinking just to annoy him, because he has just said to not let the wine get to their heads. I also adore the fact that he pronounced the names with a french accent, while the others did it with an english accent because they are american and english actors, because it just makes the portray of the character so much better. I doubt anyone else would have been better as Grantaire, he is just perfect.

okay anyway, no offence to how you enjoy Victor Hugo's grand story on revolution, Im glad you appreciate it that much but like... bro.../gal... Grantaire is an alcoholic mess, unable to even comprehend how Les Amis appreciate his presence and shows his insecurity constantly in the book. Most of Les Amis are kids who grew up without parents, some of them in abusive environments (Marius), poverty or generally just not in the best of conditions. thats 40% of why They stick together, because they can relate and bc they are friends. now the 60% is Enjolras. these kids never had a father or family, Enjolras is not just a hot smol hotheaded leader, Enj represents an idea. Enj is pure passion, he is the first good role model and guardian they have ever had, but they forget how he is barely 25 years old and has barely any experience as a military lead either. Grantaire represents the youth of France in that time of hardship when the last revolution failed and the king came back for what seemed to be eternity, when society in France began to smell its own decay to the point of being disgusted. he is one of those many fatherless children that died in June of 1832. Enj is the revolution, grantaire believes in nothing but Enj. does he love him romantically? maybe, I'm not victor Hugo I can't know if he wanted a gay romance in his novel. But I can tell, that when Enj and Grantaire died together holding hands it was pretty much a representation of how the youth of the nation believed blindly on the revolution and how this shaped their lives. *TLDR* Enjolras is the revolution that shaped the troubled, fatherless youth of france, who never had an aim in life and were represented mainly by Grantaire. Please remember this, I'm not trying to shame you, I'm just sayin, it is important.

This scene is truly profound. When he reveals his feelings for a woman that causes doubt to rise in him surrounded by his brothers during their secret meeting. The dichotomy of man. My absolute favorite thing about this song (in both the movie and the musical) is the fact that instead of having someone like the romantic Jean Prouvaire or Marius' dear friend Courfeyrac encourage him in his romantic endeavors, the directors made a conscious choice to have Grantaire, the cynical yet sweet Grantaire, be the advocate. I think it really helps to illustrate his character as it was in the book, he's the only one who truly understands what Marius is going through, he too is pining over someone he feels is impossible for him to be with. When he's encouraging Marius he's essentially saying "Don't listen to Enjolras, believe you me he doesn't understand love. Go find that girl, tell her how you feel, believe me it's better to tell her than waste away from wanting". And those glances he shares with Enjolras, literally he's trying to tell him "Hey, this is how I feel about you, I know you don't understand that and I know I seem like a drunken cynic to you but I do believe in something... That would be you..." I can't, it's so d*mn cute

So I really, really like the moment when Grantaire sets Marius up to sing because on one hand he does it to tease Enjolras but on the other hand he shows that he (maybe as the only one) understands what is going on in Marius. The gesture he does while singing “black“ to me means something along the lines of “See how easy it is for him to transfer the meaning of this colours to his feelings? _This_ is central for him in his life right now.“ And you see how much compassion he actually has for the amis while watching from the sidelines. At least I like to think so.

Complain all you want about the rest of the casting in this movie, but Aaron Tviet's Enjolras is so spot on like in a lot of adaptions, Enjolras is just this angry revolutionary and he's just kinda boring. Aaron is much softer than the usual opera actors that normally play the character and he does more than just be loud and forceful, and I personally think it's a great fit. He's intense, but has a softer side. He's definitely more of the book adaption of the character. You can tell Aaron really understood the character and his complexity, and you can see that fire in his eyes that truly makes a good Enjolras. What a shame this wasn't the full scene from the musical! It would have been even more brilliant, and the dynamic between him and Grantaire is wonderful in this too. Bravo!
@jennycao7146
@jennycao7146 7 жыл бұрын
absolutely agree with you. we can see a 'high-class' revolution leader here, a real young student. I have researched quite a lot about different Enjolras in different theatre adaptions, but none of the is the real Enjolras. They are just strong and angry, but lack of romance and ideals in their appearances and voices (sorry if you guys are fans of them). And also Aaron Tviet's look matches the description from the book - the goddess beauty! Well Enjolras was not a normal leader or fighter, he was fabulous with lots of philosophy in his words. And only Aaron can deliver that. that's why I fell for both Enjolras and Aaron. such lovely young men.

I don’t belive Enjorlas hates him, he hates that he doesn’t believe in anything and is an alcoholic, but deep down he cares for him and for his friends. If he really hated he would never accepted dying by his side and would never smiled at him or held his hand. Some actors are just perfect for them 🥺 I believe my favorites are the ones from de London version (2014) I believe they captured their personalities really well. My favorite thing is how Enjolras is over here like "Guys this is serious. We could die. People's lives are at stake. Pull yourself together Marius." And Marius is like "But you don't understand. She's so hot."

George Blagden’s Grantaire really stole my heart for good with that taunting look while singing “red” to encourage marius 👀

This has a sad melody key too, when Enjolras sits down and starts to sing about the new world. The orchestra is amazing.

Enjolras is always the most handsome singer in every Les Miz production. Victor Hugo referred to him as Adonis or Apollo!

Such a fine song, led by the irrepressible Aaron Tveit. It is brief, but it just grabs you and stays with you.
