By the time I reached the end, my eyes were flooded with tears. So much raw emotion I didn't know needed release. I lost my dad in December and I can't help but connect these words with his passing. He loved this song. When he left, he took my childhood and everything that I am with him. It killed the dream I hoped my life would be. I miss him so terribly.

I signed up for a masterclass with my singing teacher after my 3th lesson. with her. Just signing up for vocal classes to begin with felt like jumping out of a plane with no parachute, I had spend the last ten years of my life being more and more crippled by anxiety and I had never let anyone hear me sing. The only thing I knew was that I spend a year in my youth doing theater, and that is the only truly good year I have had in my life. I knew that I would regret it for the rest of my life if I didn't do what I knew would give me the most joy and meaning, and that is performing (and taking care of animals and eating olives and wine, but that requires no effort) The past ten years was with an abusive boyfriend and he made me sicker than I had ever been. The day before this masterclass, the abuse escalated and he put his hands around my neck and threatened to kill me. I ran to the neighbour, got no help, called the police, and was escorted away from him by them. I was humiliated and heartbroken and lost and small. I met up at the masterclass, feeling so fucked up mentally that I cried in the bathroom before it started and then downed a glass of wine and decided that he was not going to mess up my dream of being able to finally go on a stage again after all these years. I talked to my singing teacher and asked if I could maybe just sit and watch the others. But as we started, this strength came over me from seemingly nowhere, and when she asked who wanted to go first, I went. And I sang the song she suggested would fit me when I met her for my first lesson a month back, which was this one. I dreamed a dream. I sang it with so much strength and passion and I was met with a really warming applause and praise. I am so proud of myself for this. I have never felt so strong. Maybe this story is totally uninteresting, but I am so proud that I just had to share.

Singing this as an aspiring theatre actor in the middle of the pandemic where the government doesn’t give two shits about the theatre industry and it might never be the same and you’re probably never going to make it and your dream is fading is a new type of pain

What do you want to work with, do you want to study, where do you want to live, do you want to date someone, do you want a pet, what do you want to do with your life?
