Just Lester Paul. Technical-wise, there are death metal bands out there who play with more technique than les paul. But considering his era of music, he's probably the only one who can play like that.

Arthur Napolitano One thing to keep in mind, comparing Les Paul to today's metal guys, is that Les is playing with a clean sound, and with what kind of action? As you know, it's easier to play fast if you have a fuzzed out, super-saturated sound, on a metal guitar with a very low action. I've seen Television live, and Tom Verlaine and Richard Loyd work their asses off to play that stuff on Strats with almost no distortion.

Some excellent musicians, no doubt. A word to all the comments about "who's better" and "this guy doesn't hold a candle tot that guy" and all that ... It's not a competition, people. Each musician has their own style and skills and each one is pushing themselves to play the best that they can play. They may learn licks and tricks and get ideas from each other, but their goal isn't to play better than "___________", it's to enjoy what they're doing as much as they can and maybe inspire somebody else.

For 1978, my best guess for what's inside the 'LesPaulverizer' black box was a small cassette tape like we used to have in answering machines before they went digital... with a 4 channel recording head and it played in a loop. So you'd add sound as it went by, then it would play it back as you went. That is nothing short of amazing for that time. Digital delay lines were only for logic system, and it would be almost 2 decades before meaningful analog to digital - digital to analog systems would have enough capacity to ever attempt something like this. What a great catch of a video!
@Kohntarkosz
@Kohntarkosz 2 жыл бұрын
The Les Paulverizer was simply a remote control for a tape machine Les Paul had hidden backstage. There's no looping going on here. That demonstration is just a bit of showbiz schtick. The entire thing you hearing is just a normal tape that Les had done beforehand. As for digital delays not being able to do this kind of thing, maybe not in 1978, but 1982, I think it was, Electro-Harmonix had introduced the 16 Second Delay (and in 1984, they introduced the 64 Second Delay, but that was available for long before the original company went under), and several other companies were making delay units with 4 second delay times.

All three men were great, but especially Misters Paul and Atkins. Truly ones of a kind. May they all rest in peace?

For anyone who's wondering, the Les Paulverizer is actually just a remote control for a tape machine he had hidden backstage. It was basically stop and start, and I think he may have been able to selectively mute individual tracks, depending on which part he wanted to play.
